That’s more successful than most, I’m sure. I bet a lot of those authors remember your support and hosting fondly. And anyway, very few sites weren’t super tacky in those days to be fair to ya (Image link to screencap of AFF in 2003 – https://imgur.com/a/kRIfgLH )
Mmmm red font on black background…

Yaas! Omg so did I. When I first got into Tekken fanfiction and didn’t know how the internet worked, I thought I was gonna make myself a huge archive like FF net. I actually convinced a bunch of fan fic authors to post on my super tacky site.

I wrote some of my early fanfic attempts in pen pre-internet including a really terrible vampire story. No porn fics in them days for me! Don’t recall precisely now the first fanfic I read. Never looked at that sort of thing at school, but I first got on the internet at home in the late 90s. So, in terms of internet fanfic from others, I would have first read it either on a geocities fansite or one of the alt.fan newsgroups for me. I seem to recall alt.fan.pratchett was specifically against fan fiction being posted there, but not all of them were like that. Though many newsgroups were basically dying by that point it didn’t take long to find newsgroups with more dedicated FF content either. I had my own geocities fansite for a while with ther standard web ring links and and hit counters. They didn’t have a lot of space and the amount of page impressions allowed in an hour was tiny, but still good times… There was a long gone site called something like trekslash.ca which I am pretty sure was where I read a lot of really good Janeway/Torres femslash. One author was amazing and I can’t even recall their name.
I found the early version of the Grey Archive in about 2000 and it was on there I first heard of AFF being set up a couple years later. If I am remembering right this was after the FF.net first big mature content purge. I lurked/anonymously reviewed on AFF and didn’t join with my original account here ‘til 2004.
Weird to think how much time has passed tbh.

I was a kid. It was like 1997 or 1998 and I was kinda exploring the internet for the first time. Found some websites for my favourite (at the time) TV show, Breaker High (A canadian high school drama) and lo and behold, one of the sites had fics on it! I didn’t know wtf fan fiction was, so I read those fics thinking they were like transcripts of episodes. I thought I had watched every episode there was so I was super excited that they didn’t sound familiar.
And then they got dirty. That’s when I kinda realized that these ‘episodes’ did not uphold the Canadian Broadcast Co. standards. Then I realized if other people could write that shit, so the hell could I! With my newfound godly powers, I impregnated the whole cast of characters, because… well, because I could.
    Yup.

I’ve been thinking about this most of the afternoon, and it happened in 2008, probably somewhere in February or March most likely. If memory serves I discovered anime that spring, more precisely Death Note, and a little while later Bleach. And googling the interwebs to find out the name of the intro-song in Death Note, I somehow stumbled upon fan fiction. Surprisingly enough, the Pit instantly felt all kinds of wrong, so I never ventured there. Somewhere in these aimless wanderings of the dark alleys of the World Wide Web, I stumbled across of all things, a Supernatural fan fiction, and since that was another silly thing I liked, I followed that rabbit and found AFF.
I honestly can’t remember exactly how it happened, but I do remember that it had something to do with Supernatural, Death Note, and Bleach, and then in the process I not only discovered AFF but also my favourite band, Nightmare.

I think confidence helps too. I think at the start a lot of writers think their writing is awesome enough to push on people, yet won't read it themselves and get super insecure about critical feedback so they won't go to betas. Getting over that phase was a bit of a milestone for me. Like getting to a point where I can take reasonable critiques and enjoy reading my own writing and edit the hell out of it and still think the shit I'm spinning is gold.
Edit: I'm in a hotel recovering from a biopsy so if I Fuck up my grammar or spelling y'all just gotta deal. <3

My writing has absolutely evolved. A few things factor into it. I very much credit my years in fanfiction as a powerful foundation. Though my writing sucked back then, it was an excellent training ground for character development and crafting interesting stories using elements everyone involved was already familiar with. Also formal education played a part. I'm a high school drop out but I went out of my way to teach myself as well as seek out others who could teach me: take classes, read writing books, write essays and long discussions with my english professor mother.
Plus there's the natural improvement that happens just online from writing a lot and communicating with other writers that I 100% believe has the biggest impact out of all the things I just mentioned.

I used to write out some stories and type out others. Like some stories just needed that pen and paper feel. I’ve been using my notebooks less and less often as the years go on. At this point I write maybe half a page in a notebook every now and then, just to get a conversation or idea down I don’t want to forget, but otherwise I don’t write whole scenes on paper anymore like I used to. I don’t really think it’s a bad thing. It’s just the way my writing is evolving for better or worse.
Writing with a pen and paper is slower. It takes longer to get thoughts out, so for me, it’s not as practical. I think part of the reason I’m leaning away from the practice is because when I feel a pressure of time, I want to be able to write quickly. Haven’t been able to settle down somewhere and really take my time and savour the art. I go straight for the keyboard because I need to type quick.
Okay, so now about the organization. I feel very strongly about this, lol. I come from a long line of organizers, and I ALWAYS organize on the computer, because I can back it up, access it easily, and not worry about a relative stumbling onto it. When I was a kid, when I wrote everything on paper, I actually used physical folders and owned a file cabinet for my writings. Yes. A thirteen year old girl who very proudly owned a file cabinet. Deal with it. So here it is, my epic system:
Every story has its own folder (Except oneshots and fic starts that didn’t make it into a whole chapter.)  I name the folder “Story Name 08 12 2012” ← The numbers are the date it was created. (Because the file properties are unreliable, and I have too many old stories that I’m not sure when I wrote them and it drives me absolutely insane.) Within the story folder I have four files. The file in which I’m doing the writing (This file doesn’t have the complete story as I move chapters out once they’re complete and edited.), a master file (Which has the full story and a duplicate backup on the cloud), A file with scenes I have cut from the main story, and a file with plans/research/profiles/etc (If there’s too much information here, sometimes I will split this file into two, one for plans, and one for research/related info).  I love my system.

I...dunno...just started to crave continuing it, got intense over the weekend, don’t know why.  But, in an effort to unstick it, I’m going through the old forum topics to see if there’s something close to what I need.  Otherwise, I’m putting up a new topic.

CloverReef reacted to Desiderius Price in Rape in Literature: Thoughts?
For ages, rape was only defined as male on female vaginal intercourse, and treated more as “theft” from the husband/boyfriend/family.  There’s still places today that treat it as a shame on the woman’s family’s honor, and the woman’s killed for it, like they’re a piece of bubble gum only meant to be used once.  Societies can change, which is why if it’s being historically accurate, a story can portray it as a positive, if it’s in line with the history.  I mean, an old-fashioned pirate novel?  Rape could be part of that.
How the society responds to a rape, whether it’s condemned or praised, says a lot about that society.
That said, I do tend to have a special streak of meanness I’ll apply to the rapist, even if the society upholds the act.
