Been a couple years since I’ve had a JP marathon! Totally have to do one now.

Random name generators are pretty awesome. Place names have always been a fun thing to do for me, when it comes to my fantasy world planning, but I’ve been working on that world for over a decade, and plenty of the names I thought sounded all cool and shit 15 years ago, I’ve since changed because now they sound pretty ridiculous. But when I changed them, I just removed a few letters or rearranged the letters until they didn’t sound silly anymore. For most of those places, I just smooshed a bunch of sounds together until I liked it. Sometimes I’d use a fantasy name generator and mix and match the sounds. My favourite generator for that job is the rinkworks one. And then there’s the description name that you and TCR mentioned. I think taking a description and putting it in a different language, as you explained, is an excellent way to find something that might be unoriginal and make it sound cool for your English audience. Like in one story I had that took place in a central american inspired island. Decided to name it after a marine animal, but used the Spanish name. Isla Raya. In a chinese setting, you could also take words or names from other languages of countries that have warred and fought over land with China, such as mongolia, or indigenous groups in the area. I’m not sure what there is in China. Hmong? Or different dialects. Or just take a given name or a surname in your mythos or from history and use that!

Personally, I like the deus ex as a tool. But as with any tool, it has to be used consciously and carefully to avoid that eye roll, 1 second left moment DP mentioned. Sometimes it’s fun to straddle the line between miraculous and realistic. Sometimes miraculous can be made believable, and sometimes shit that’s unbelievable can be gripping and suspenseful. It’s just when it’s used in excess or, you know, cliche-y, or very clearly just stuck in because the writer didn’t have any better ideas, then it feels too silly/lazy to enjoy. Sometimes it feels like a wasted opportunity for growth because the authors afraid to hurt their characters. Moral of the story: Tools are fun if you use them right. (I feel like that’s a wink wink moment… Do Deus Ex Machinas vibrate?)

Trying to post a new story in the original archive. 3 attempts, with two different browsers (Chromium and Firefox on Linux). Every time, I get a loss of paragraph formatting. I haven’t had this problem before. I’ve successfully posted stories weeks ago without a loss of formatting, so I’m a little baffled.

And now I have Sweet Transvestite playing in my head on loop. I’m not complaining, I’m bragging. Friggin’ love that song. Dem legs tho!

I’ll keep this brief because the name says it all. This is for writing purposes, of course. I need a little help while I explore my options. If you were a Lord (let’s say… 16th-18th century based fantasy world), what reasons could you have for summoning a demon. The type of demon is not yet specified, so let’s assume that the demon can do pretty much anything for you. May not be a ‘demon’ in the evil sense, may be a genie, god, spirit, imp, etc. Options so far: Vengeance/Revenge (Killing someone or someone’s loved ones, humiliating somehow, destroying someone’s reputation, turning enemy into submissive pet) Love (Making someone fall in love with you, making two other people fall in love, making people in love fall out of love) Lust (Banging the demon itself) Painless plastic surgeon! (Make yourself more appealing, change your appearance or species!) Promotion (You want to be King or want others to love/obey you.) Magic/Alchemy (immortality, the act of granting wishes) Healing (Cure for something incurable, stop a plague, cure for mental illness) Warfare (creating an army, or winning a battle, or summoning some brilliant strategist?) Avoiding Warfare (squashing rebellion) Bodyguard Confidante/Advisor (Provide information, honesty, loyalty, friendship) Spy (Also could provide information, play mole in enemy forces, seduce or befriend an enemy) Knowledge (Investment secrets, business superiority) Keeping society from progressing/molding society into personal utopia. I always worry all the perviness I throw in might be gratuitous, but the way you said it makes it all sound totally legit lol. Those are very flattering compliments; now you’ve gone and made me blush.

I’m a bit anal about character names. There’s a lot of criteria I need to check names off against when I’m planning MCs. I typically use baby name lists for real world names and name generators for fantasy name inspiration that I chop up and smoosh together. They have to collectively not sound too alike, both phonetically and syllable...wise? Course they have to fit the world, and region, and whatever other social circumstances. If it’s a rare or fantasy name, my biggest concern is finding something that doesn’t look too odd when repeated multiple times in a paragraph. And I like to know the meanings and pronunciations of course too, just to make sure I didn’t name them after a cow turd or something. Then, once that’s all figured out, they have to feel right for the character. This process can take anywhere from 10 minutes to hooours. Like the fantasy world char I’m trying to name right now. Lufer… Elari… Luflaraoisjd…? FML.

Blackbird Chapter 14 BronxWench I love your words. ‘Lexicon’ is so much more interesting than ‘vocabulary’, and another of those words that reminds me of Skyrim. Thank you for not spoiling the end, even if my neurosis-turned-separate-entity is dying to know your thoughts, but I am one of those readers that reads reviews before I read the fics, so I appreciate it. It amuses me that you chose a line that I almost took out. You’re very good at making a writer take another look at, and appreciate their own use of the language, so thank you! Pippychick (for 13) I’m so thrilled, I’m almost giddy. I think that’s the one technique I read about years ago and really wanted to run with: the use of other senses to bring scenes to life. I’m glad it’s working and I appreciate the validation. As for your comments on the events. You’re quite clever. (for 14) In real life, I won’t even kill a spider, but the violent scenes are the funnest to write. As long as I can picture them well enough in my head so the descriptions don’t get muddied and the pacing doesn’t drag. LOL And here I am, when the chapters start creeping up on the 4k mark, getting all squirrely thinking ‘ain’t nobody gonna read this long!’ You mean not everyone has my commitment issues? Weird.

Fanfiction writing is excellent practice. It taught me a lot of things about character analysis, and eventually creation. Because usually we write fanfiction for the love of the characters, right? I think it’s subjective. In some senses, a character is a villain and a hero depending on their actions at any given time, but I tend to categorize characters based on their importance in my story. If they’re the central character, I’d say anti-hero, and if they’re the main conflict/opposition to the central character, then they’d be the anti-villain?

I’m with Bronxwench and you, JayDee, on this one. I can’t really articulate it any better than either of you, though. I’m about 80% confident it should be “Snyder’s Summers Sexfest”.

Personally, I looove the antagonist role. I love a good villain, so naturally I have a looot of thoughts on this matter. I agree that the villain should think they’re doing the right thing in most cases. (Especially with new writers or writers whose strengths are not in the more naughtiness-inclined characters) But I also do think there are uses for the stereotypes. And the comical bad villains. If done well, a villain who knows they’re doing the wrong thing and loves it can be so friggin awesome! I think my favourite type of villain, usually reserved for the drama or survival genres, is the kind of person you actually find yourself rooting for and getting broken hearted over. Someone you can totally relate to and like, and want to see succeed even if you know they’re doing something they shouldn’t be doing. Like the opposite of an anti-hero. An anti-villain? lol. For every kind, though, especially the ones who you try to make sympathetic, you have to be careful not to try to make them sooooo normal and relatable they become uninteresting. When writing a villain, regardless of the type you go for, I think it’s the same as writing every other character. The most important thing, to me, is to understand what motivates them, to get into their heads, to understand what they’re feeling. Even if they’re motivated by sheer LOLs. I need to see through the villain’s eyes, to feel their hatred, lust, frustration, love, or jealousy. Personally, I always need to love my villains, even if I want my readers to hate them. I was going to say more on that last point, but I’ve gone on long enough and not entirely sure what I’m talking about anymore because I have so many people chattering in my ear.

Little Red Part 2 Mona Thompson, I know, right? The ending definitely left it open for some continuation potential. Maybe I’ll do a sequel or a longer fic with these fellas sometime, if inspiration grips me.
