  1. I'm working with our hosting company to see what I can find out - DemonGoddess is really the person to handle this, but she's at work right now so it's left on me (Uh ohs!) We'll have it figured out soon I hope!!
  2. The glasses is a good idea cause as Kera said, it's highly unlikely that the amount of alcohol needed to blur vision would allow appropriate functioning of most men. You could also flip the genders and have the woman be the one with blurry vision as it's a tad easier for women to get into it while drunk than men. I know when I get drunk, unless I'm pass out drunk, I have no issue with wanting sex or my body responding correctly, but I do need to keep an eye on my guy when we are drinking if I want sex... Too much and he's useless!
  3. While I absolutely appreciate the advice, we need rather in depth advice and will need to keep a specific lawyer on retainer for DMCA purposes who is familiar Entertainment Law, Intellectual Property Law, Copyright Law and Business Law. Thank you though!!
  4. It's not a downside - There is actually a section of the DCMA that will help protect the site legally but not affect the authors
  5. Oh my… It’s been a long week! Getting back into the swing of things after returning from Dragon*Con has been hard. It’s always fun being among what I affectionately term ‘my people’ and hard to come back to everyday life, but earning a living is a necessary evil so now that I’m back and settled in – September’s news! Apollo goes to Dragon*Con (And comes back...) Minors and AFF PayPal Balance & Donations Archive Clean Up & Moderation Status So speaking of Dragon*Con – What a wonderful three days! Where to start? First and foremost, I had a great time representing the site in a couple different ways. I got to meet up with one of our advertisers again, Kiernan Kelly. She’s a blast to talk with and one of our advertising programs biggest fans. I have to give her a huge shout out for mentioning us at panel after panel and handing out tons of advertising cards! Like many of you I’m sure, I’ve always been wary of associating my real name with the site so last year was a huge step forward and this year made me realize why I do it. At one LGBT writers panel when Kiernan introduced me as the owner of AdultFanFiction.Net, there was a round of applause – To say I was stunned is an understatement. I got to speak with some awesome people and speak at a marketing panel to offer our services to those there. I’ve got a few people that are seriously considering campaigns with us, so look for new banners in the coming months! My next shock came Saturday evening. Normally Kiltblowing is Friday and Saturday so I miss this panel, but I had the chance to attend Whedonverse’s adult fan fiction panel. One of the first questions was of course “What is the weirdest pairing you’ve ever seen?” Since Rule 34 is alive and well, you know if it’s strange, we have it here. So I stood up to answer the question and when I introduced myself as the owner, I was invited to join the panel up front to an even larger round of applause than the night before! The other ladies and I had a blast talking with the crowd about crazy fandoms, kinks, stories and other such nonsense! Someone even wanted a picture with me cause I’m Apollo – Talk about an OMG kinda moment! I also learned something that night that I had long suspected, but warmed my heart to hear. The users there loved the fact that we are strict on our tagging policy and that we are active in moderating the site. They know that we respond and they appreciate that fact! Every so often we get positive emails and thanks, but to hear it verbally and face to face really means the world to me and makes it easier to do what we do. The other good thing that came from Dragon*Con was being able to sit down with an industry lawyer. I learned a good bit about DCMA and how it applies to the site, so please keep an eye out for updates to our ToS in the next week or so. He gave me some great tips and ideas about how to keep the site safe while we gather the money to turn this into a business and not just a hobby site. We reviewed the basics of how we run the site and he confirmed that we are taking the necessary steps to protect ourselves legally, with the exception of the DCMA stuff, but that will be rectified soon! Right now as it stands, I am personally liable for the site. If the site gets sued, I get sued. Every day I take on the responsibility for our content and our users. This is something I’m glad to do as I feel that we provide an outlet for you, our readers and our authors, but because of that, there are things that I must do as well to keep my liability to a minimum. One of these steps is actively hunting for minors on site. As I’ve harped about in past news posts – If you aren’t 18, you should not be here. It puts me in danger legally. We had a period of time where past moderators didn’t do that and now we have to go back through old memberships on top of the new to find people who registered while under age. This is not optional. If you registered before you were 18 years old, any pre-18 content will be deleted. If there is nothing associated with the account, it is simply removed. If you are still under 18, then everything goes. As I said, this is not optional. This is to cover me in case some angry parent finds their child on the site and decides they want to go after me for all that I’m not worth. We don’t like doing it, honestly we don’t, but we have to. I cannot stress this enough. Please don’t be upset with us when we remove your content or content that you enjoy reading because someone couldn’t follow a simple rule. I’d rather deal with your anger than having to sit before a judge. In more routine news, we are currently sitting on war chest of $563.88 with September’s bills paid. Hopefully we will see a return on our investment in Dragon*Con in the coming months as we finish paying our coder and will be able to afford a lawyer that will help us turn this into a business to provide that extra layer of protection for myself and my staff. If you’d like to contribute to either the site’s monthly operation or our legal fund, please see our Donation page for more information. If you’d like to donate specifically to helping the site incorporate, please note that in your donation! Beyond that, moderation continues slow and steady. See what’s been done here! Happy Reading & Writing! Apollo & DG
  6. Actually, so you are aware, we carefully document everything prior to removing a user. We have two categories when it comes to minors on site. Old minors, meaning prior to the active moderation and search that started in 2008, and current minors, users that registered underage after that point. Old minors have their profile modified to reflect a registration date of their 18th birthday and any pre-18 content removed - We do this because we recognize that the site was not properly regulated before that. Current minors, everything goes, no questions asked, no matter if it was posted before or after their 18th birthday. As DG stated, the law is the law - We don't like it, but we have to. To answer your question though, yes - Now that you are 18, you are welcome to re-register and to re-post. We appreciate your complying with the ToS going forward!

  9. DG has very valid points on customizing it specifically to your tastes - That is why we use IP Board as it does allow this! The suggestion on reorganizing the categories is a good one, but please always remember that when making suggestions, being confrontational like this isn't the best way to effect change. Perhaps next time "Hey, looking at the current layout, I believe there could be some improvements that would draw more people to the forums." And then just lay out the suggestions as opposed to "I don't like this, you guys are doing it wrong tone" You know we listen to users and while there are some times we can't, we always explain why things are as they are!

  11. It's that time of year again - Another year older and hopefully another year wiser! Hope it's a good one Dragon!

  13. Right now we are limited to how many levels we can have - With the new code we will have more
  14. We haven't updated any coding or changed our advertising platform - I don't know much about iPods, but if you can, clear cache/cookies and try again. If that doesn't help, let us know and DG will look into it when she's home
  15. RIP Harry Harrison :( Sad to see so many Sci Fi greats passing...

  16. JayDee, while sarcastic, is quite correct. Also, please note that she is one of the Authors on the site, a long standing member, not a admin or moderator. As a user, so long as she remains polite, she is welcome to voice whatever opinions she pleases same as you are. Please understand that we've been dealing with the issue for many years and every time we've taken any sort of action she's posted something similar to what she currently has up on whatever site or social media she's work with at the time and we've said nothing in regards to whatever version she's taken to telling. When the time came that we decided to remove her, I knew that we would most likely have some very upset readers as she has a large following and I also knew based on past behavior that she would likely blame the staff and degrade the site. As owner, I made the decision that any inquires into the status of her fiction would be answered with the above statement and only that statement prior to even removing the account. It is concise, truthful and in reality professional. I made the choice to include the exact dates and reasons to avoid a long drawn out thread of "I can't believe you deleted her - You guys are mean nasty horrible people for enforcing the Terms of Service a user agreed to!" We've had that before with other users and quite frankly, this was an easy way to cut it off at the pass. (Please note that it did work quite well for the better part of two months) I did not at any point denigrate her or her writing and nothing was an attack, personal or otherwise. Believe me, if I truly felt it was necessary to stoop to the level she has on her various social media sites, I could. There is more to the story than what is posted above, but beyond a factual stating as to the history and why, that is not something users need to be concerned about. It's quite frankly no more or no less than a reference I would give if I had a person call for a job reference or one for a lease: Just the facts Jack. I've held to a strict level of honesty and transparency with my members and will not deviate from that. As this is obviously not going to resolve anything or change your mind, I locked the thread. I respectfully ask that as I have responded to this and there is really nothing new that could be said on either side that you not start this up anywhere else on the forum. Thank you.

  18. Perhaps next year - I'll be in the area!
  19. Blade - So your the guy to find to get backstage access? LOL!! For the others going - I know one day I'll be a pirate wench, but I may just play it civvie the other days Like I said, follow AFF on Twitter and FB for tips on where to find me!
  20. Was that the one on Erotica writers and epub? And he runs a site (crap early morning and not remembering the name!) that gives resources etc?
  21. Well, life has been life and another month has passed! It’s been a busy one for me personally between still welcoming larger than normal amounts of new members, family medical issues and work, but hopefully the rest of the summer goes smoothly! AFF and Dragon*Con Fan Fiction in the news PayPal Balance & Donations Archive Clean Up & Moderation Status 24 days! There are 24 days to Dragon*Con 2012! I’m excited as all get out! This will be my 3rd year going and 2nd actively promoting the site. Last year I had the pleasure of meeting a handful of our advertisers and adding a few to our line up and hope to expand on that further this year! Now, I know I’m elusive for an owner of a site as large as this, but like many of you I also have a personal life and family that wouldn’t approve, BUT if you are going to D*C this year, once again a unique opportunity presents itself! If you’ve ever been good at ‘Where’s Waldo’ and think you can find me in a crowd of 40,000+ people, I’ll be there. My handle will be on my badge and there are a few places I’m sure to be found: Kiltblowing – Expect I’ll be the one catcalling somewhere from the front! Some of the writing panels, a couple Star Trek and I love to sit on the Hyatt’s deck to smoke. I’ll also be posting hints and clues throughout my weekend there on AFF’s Facebook/twitter account as well, so good luck! So this last month has been exciting for me personally and will hopefully bring a positive exposure to the site. PBS posted a video up on talking about fan fiction and how it has been around through the ages – Granted there are comparisons between Sherlock Holmes fan fiction after Holmes was killed off to ’50 Shades,’ but it was a positive spin which is always good! AFF was also contacted by two different media outlets for information on upcoming articles that again, should help promote the good side of fan fic! Once that is out, I’ll make sure that it’s blasted all over for you guys to see! That being said, I want to give my thanks to our wonderful community here. That is truly what we have created over the last 10 years. The forum is thriving with more and more members using it to connect with other members, the archive is humming along and we just keep growing. When I put out the call asking for people willing to speak about fan fiction to the journalist, I was amazed at the response. Now, I’ll freely admit that I know a lot of it had to do with wanting our own 15 minutes of fame (Hey, who doesn’t?), but the stories and the passion that was so obvious even in the written word took my breath away on occasion. Are there other archives out there? Absolutely! But I don’t think that any other large, multi-fandom archive has the type of community that we do here and I thank you for being a part of it! Authors and AFF have a symbiotic relationship – We provide an outlet for your creative works and you provide the works to bring in more members! When I see the number of people, the amount of stories, the outpouring of creativity, it blows my mind every time. Just like you don’t do this for profit, neither do we, so here is my monthly call – Donations are always appreciated! I know the economy is rough, but $5 here or there means the world to us. Right now our PayPal balance is standing at $545.88 Archive Clean up is still on going. DemonGoddess can power through 300+ chapters a day when she’s not having to put out small fires – So this means she’s into M through R in Books with only Peter Pan and Phantom of the Opera remaining! As for archive Moderation – adding to the staff has really helped! Take a look at our progress here. Happy Reading & Writing! Apollo & DG
  22. Thank you for your suggestions - They are always appreciated. Please understand that there are many limitations in the current coding and while we are working to bring the site into 2012, it is a long process. We do have to be careful about what links we openly support due to how the site is supported. Our advertisers are small sites that generally don't have a ton of money for advertising but because their content relates well with the site have found success here and I do not want to distract from that, which is why in stories we do not allow advertising of any kind. Social media is a necessity for a way to communicate with fans, while recommended reading helps promote with in the site, same as currently reading which also allows the author to track stories they currently are reading on the archive since an update function is not possible at this time. As for the review aspect - Users are notified by email when they have a new review. Since the user visible setting for this option doesn't translate until we complete the code rewrite, we have manually enabled it for all authors and only turn it off on request. This is an extremely important reason for emails to be valid. Please don't hesitate to offer up further suggestions in the future, but please also understand that there are limits, despite all we would love to be able to do for our users!

  24. I believe the story to which you refer was one posted by DextrousLeftie. I apologize, however due to repeated ToS violations and warnings, the user has been removed from the site. Please note that she has been on AFF since 2006, has been contacted several times, and the staff has had several conversations with her in regards to the previous ToS violations. There are to date: 5 documented instances of unauthorized advertising, starting 07/2010 5 documented instances of review damands, starting 07/2010 1 unauthorized poll in story After the last instance in August of 2011, she was suspended for a period of 2 weeks at which point she was advised that this was her last warning. She was made aware that the next ToS violation would result in her removal from the site. It was brought to our attention recently that she was editing a story to bump it up in the chronological listing on the update page to advertise the fact that she was leaving AFF. After careful review, it was determined that the report was indeed correct. While we wish her well in her future writing endeavors, bumping a story with no actual update at the expense of other Author's who have actually posted new content is not acceptable and a violation of our ToS. We stand by our ToS and our warnings - As such she was removed.
  25. Actually it does Marking something completed is a tag - That FAQ explains how to edit codes/tags. All you have to do is edit the codes as indicated in the FAQ
