Dear author of the roleplay or the story.

How hard is it for you to grab a dictionary to check on how a word is spelled or what it means? Seriously, if you are fluent in English or even if it is your second tongue, you should at least do your best to spell each word out correctly. I hate seeing roleplays and some stories that you do filled with spelling errors.

How hard is it to correct those errors? It doesn't take long, no more than five seconds after you find the word spelled correctly in your dictionary. And yes, you should have a dictionary by your computer desk to make sure if you do not know the correct spelling of a word and you know how it most likely is spelled, don't go about posting it unless you are very sure that the word sounds like how it is spelled.

Almost every roleplay or story that I see coming from you, is riddled with spelling errors. I am so tempted to beta read those parts that you do, so you have at least a sense of what word, you have misspelled. I know the roleplays and some stories are not beta read but geez, a little consideration for your readers would be nice. Sometimes, I cannot even understand what the word you post even meant to be as the word is badly misspelled or done the wrong word itself!

Please for the love of Fanfiction, please, please, go out and buy a dictionary and look up words you do not know the spelling of. Most of the time, you will find the words spelled correctly in them and you will learn how to spell them correctly.

A dictionary is a fanfiction author's best tool beyond a beta reader. Find both a beta reader and a dictionary and use them both as you will not be disappointed.

Beth

PS: This letter is not directed to any of the authors on the forum but a general view of some authors who don't give a rat's ass about spelling properly in role plays or their own stories.

I agree with you! I've read several (and role played with) numerous where the spelling is horrible. Thank GOD word processor has spell check! It's very helpful. Then again the grammar check isn't so great so I have to do that manually. lol

Firefox also has a cute little underliner if you spell something wrong. For instance, right now, it underlined "underliner" in red. Get FF!

I use my word processor to spell check most of my writings on a forum or e-mail. It's tough but at least my words are spelled correctly.

"I don't know what a beta is/I don't like them/they steal my works."

"they'res nohting wronc wiht my speling/it's too bothersome/it hinders my creative process/English isn't my first language/but everyone knows what I mean, right, so why are you being such an uptight asshole/I don't have a spellcheck, I type it in the text window/I'm not very good at spelling."

Now that we have those under the way. (Hey, someone had to do it, seeing that the actual culprits aren't likely to come here. tongue.gif ) Honestly, just using the damn spell check takes a lot less energy and time than later on explaining and defending themselves against us horrible spelling nazis.

Yeah, the occasional typo not caught by the spellcheck happens to us all, but some of those folks out there are so creative about their misspellings that the reader has to pause for five minutes to try and gauge what they might've been going for.

Haha!! I've tried to type like that .... it's difficult! I had an English teacher who made us all type and write papers that were spelled like that. Even printed a list of words and how to spell them just so when it came down to actual papers we would have the "chat speak" as he called it out of our systems.

I would love for those people from the site come here and actually see that we do not want to stop and try to understand their words that they write and that all we want to do is help them write a story where we do not have to drag out our dictionary to figure out what word they are trying to write.

I can understand with those who do not speak English as their first tongue, I know of several people who do not speak English fluently but they write it very well and they will accept the critics from others if they happen to misspell a word or two.

But geez! the freakin' newcomers on the site are downright bad! There is one girl in the Bleach catagory who didn't even spell the words right and I think she's from America! What are they turning out in school these days - idiots who cannot spell for shit?

But this one girl, refuses to join the Beta group and even after we asked her to go join, she said, if my memory serves me right here, I don't want to and she said something about not having an e-mail account(I didn't save the post that she said it in as she, then, deleted the story itself a day later. I would have informed my fellow moderators on our group about this girl not having a valid e-mail account. I may send her an official e-mail asking her if she would like some help with her story to make it better from one of the moderators on the site. I'll help the girl out but I don't see her really accepting my aid, since she rejected the offer to go to the Beta group.) So me and another person proceeded to review her story telling her all the words and sentence structure that was wrong.

You would think that she would accept the critic from us and correct her story - right?

Wrong! She deleted the story completely from the site and posted another story riddled with the same bloody ass mistakes.

I refused to even review or look at her story knowing that she would either delete the story and post another one or leave the review up and do nothing in correcting her mistakes. I may review her story and leave her a huge ass corrected story in the review. She may take it the wrong way and claim that I am harrassing her or maybe she will see that I am only trying to help her.

There are several good stories out there but when they are riddled with spelling, grammar and sentence structure mistakes, it makes reading the story so hard to do that most people will rate the story one star or not at all and sometimes leave a harsh review to the author of that story.
