All right, I punched in 'badfic' to a search engine a few days ago and have continued my search in free time over the past couple days. I don't know about you, but I enjoy reading badfic a great deal. I already knew about VVG and GAF but decided I hadn't found enough badfic mockery sites. If you consider badfic mockery a form of etertainment, read these and post links you've found on your own. Consider it a form of public service.

Badfic

^ A classic must for enjoyers of MST- style Badfic Mockery.^

Badfic

^ More of review than MST, but Mockery nonetheless.^

Badfic

(requires registration, but it's free so why not?)

Badfic

^sadly, the last link I came across. I haven't read it through thoroughly, but there seems to be a sense of humour involved, and what I HAVE read is pretty good. Seems that searching 'badfic' gets you more badfic than badfic mockery, and I guess that makes sense.^

Please note that I do not seek to insult anybody, merely enjoy really bad writing. Please don't post links to fics you think suck, only to sites where they mock fics. I don't want you saying 'I don't like THIS fic', and someone saying 'I wrote that, grrr, arrgh.' Professionals only.

Let the badfic begin.

Oh, I don't find the writing humorous, either. But the MST - that's typically hillarious.

I wonder if the admin would be ticked off if we started doing it? *devilish smirk*

Well, my Fanboys! co-writer Chaos and I have done many MSTs over the years, including MSTing such gems as 'Artemis' Lover' (the renowned and reviled Oscarfic), "Rini's Special Moment With Serena' by Darren Schivo and some other gems by Lady PallaPalla and Mike 'Shiro Daemon' Fuller...

I personally believe that 'Rini's Special Moment' was our best MST work, if for no other reason than the sheer scale of the undertaking... it was a damned long and rambling fic, and we made it through the whole thing, although much Guinness and sake was consumed to dull the pain and 'wtf?!' moments.

I'm always looking for awful fics to inflict on Chaos so we can MST them together. It's fun to watch his eyebrow twitch.

I always reccomend to people that they read the MST'd version of hideous fics, simply to protect their brains from the badness.

I found a horrible Invader Zim lemon the other day and sent it Chaos' way. Plots are brewing, trust me... ^^v

I'm not a Lord of the Rings fanfic type of person (love the movies tho tongue.gif) but, I still found the first link just down right funny. Thanks for my new addiction, MST! Yay! Addiction!

Oh boy, another bunch of pretentious sites with people who think they're better than everyone else because they can pick on fanfiction.

Yes, I know, we're all supposed to think these sites are fantastic, we're all supposed to get a big chuckle, but personally? They annoy me. Not because these people are assholes, but because in most cases they don't even want to admit they are assholes. In fact, they want to be considered heros for saving the world from this horrible fanfiction!

Oh bullshit. They are assholes that get their jollies out of picking on people. I'd say they were bullies, but bullies are usually honest about it. These people are as nasty as any bully, but instead of admiting it, they say they're providing a public service. If they hurt someone's feelings, they shrug and say, "Well, if she's that sensitive, she shouldn't be on the net!"

Sensitivity is considered a crime to them, yet, quite often they get sensitive about their own things, but that is somehow different.

If they spent a tenth of the energy they spend being bullies on writing some of these horrible writers and suggesting ways they can improve, they might actually do some good in this world. They might actually make a poor writer a good one.

But, that wouldn't be nearly as much fun, would it? That wouldn't satisfy the urge to be nasty, while still expecting to be considered the Hero of Fanfiction, because picking on people is sooo good for them.

When I started writing it was horrible, I admit it. I didn't think it was horrible at the time, but it was. Luckilly, I had people in my life who helped me see my mistakes and improve. Yes, I am a very sensitive person and they took that into consideration.

If places like Godawful and those other sites existed when I was a kid? My stories would have been all over them. At my age now, I would probably appreciate how bad they were, but back when I wrote them? That would have crushed me. I probably would have refused to show my writing to anyone, ever again. I probably wouldn't have improved. I'd still be a shitty writer, writting crappy stories, too afraid to show them to the world.

I'm far from the next Steven King, but my story on AFF has a fair number of hits and a fair number of reviews. I'd say there might be a few people who would have lost out on something they enjoyed had I given up writing.

You may disagree with me. You may feel that these sites do a great service. You may have even been a victim and in the long run, it did help you. But, everyone is different. And news flash, it is not a crime to be sensitive. It's not even considered inappropriate in the offline world to be sensitive. It is considered inappropriate to be a bully in public.

And, if you run one of these sites and are upset that I've called you assholes? Buck it up, sunshine. It's a mean old world out there, and the sooner you realize it, the better you'll be. In fact, I think you should thank me for insulting you, because I'm doing the world a favor by pointing out your particularly assholish tendencies. In the long run, I think that my insulting you will make you a better person.

And to quote one of those sites? If you don't like it, I'll just tell you to shove it up your ass. If you have an opinion, shove it up your ass. If you think I care, shove it up your ass. Because we all know that using the term, "Shove it up your ass" wins every argument. And makes you sooo witty as well.

Melody Fate, I totally agree with everything you said. Heck, I've even had my stories ripped apart there too. And, it was by someone here at this very site. Dagmar Buse. Watch out for her. She's one of them.

That was different to wake up . . .

Here is my take on it, devil's advocate to Melody. And I posted something like this opinion on the yahoo group when it was brought up there. I want everyone to just answer these few questions to themselves and think.

Just to ask, how many people here have read Artemis's Lover?

Ok, what about Lost Elves by SuperJizz?

Pj's collected works? Resident Evil Snuff fics included?

Perenial favorite Celebrian?

Agony in Pink?

Spider Attack?

Ok, last question, have you read all these fics without feeling either your faith in humanity dwindle or the urge to spork the writer who created these infamous works?

If you haven't, then really, really, look them out, read them. If after reading them, if you can still say that those stories don't deserve to be picked on (or burnt in hell), then more power to you. You'll have every write then to think places like God-Aweful are bullies.

Picking on people is one thing, poking fun at awful fanfiction is another. Some of the authors even have a sense of humour about it (I refer you to Dr Thinker).

Chaos and I are pretty brutal on these fics, admittedly, but they are the worst of the worst, either based on lack of writing ability or due to hideous and repulsive subject matter. Fics featuring a young Chibiusa having sex are pretty much asking for it, especially if the Mau cats are involved... ohmy.gif

Similarily, Chaos and I have challenged people to MST the Fanboys fics and no one's pulled it off. Granted, the Fanboys fics are pretty much a parody of themselves, probably only Chaos or I could effectively MST them.

MSTing is an art, pretty much the antithesis of bad fic-writing. We actually got an e-mail from one author we MST'd, thanking us for our MST treatment of his fic, because more people than ever were visiting his site to read his fics and see what all the horror was about.

We should have got a commission laugh.gif

I've seen bad MSTs. Chaos and I have MST'd bad MSTs... it's like a really fucked up Escher painting.

I enjoy a good MST, every bit as much as a good fic. It's the only thing that makes these infamous fics readable.

You know, there was nothing in my rant that I haven't heard people who run those type of sites use in their own defense, right down to the "Shove it up your ass" (Check the last link...that's their response to anyone who doesn't think their site is just the bestest thing in the world)

Here is my take on it, devil's advocate to Melody. And I posted something like this opinion on the yahoo group when it was brought up there. I want everyone to just answer these few questions to themselves and think.

Perenial favorite Celebrian?

Everyone but the snuff.

Ok, last question, have you read all these fics without feeling either your faith in humanity dwindle or the urge to spork the writer who created these infamous works?

I never said the fics they picked on weren't bad. They're all horrible. They are some of the worst examples of writing I've ever seen. And I'm sure, even without the humilation, most of these people have or will realize later how awful they are.

To me, a bad fiction is like getting a bad haircut. We've all had a bad haircut in our lives. And while our friends may be supportive, usually one of them will finally find a way to tell you that style doesn't suit you. So, you wait for it to grow out or if it's long enough, have your hair cut shorter to get rid of it.

However, how would you feel if you went outside and someone came over and went, "OH MY GOD, THIS IS THE WORST HAIRCUT I'VE EVER SEEN! It's burning my EYES it's so bad! My cat coughs up HAIRBALLS that are prettier than that!"

On top of that, they started calling their friends to come over. And all their friends gathered around, saying the same things or worse. If one of your friends comes over to help you, they'll say that friend is imaginary. (Sock puppet!) And when you finally get away, you find out that one of them took pictures of your terrible haircut and now has them plastered on a public wall for all to see.

Some folks may not mind, but for others it would be humilitating. And I don't think for those who would be damaged by it, it should be justified with, "Well, it's a mean old world out there, and maybe she should just buck it up." No matter what, the villain in this is not the girl who got the bad haircut, it's the group of bullies that decided that her haircut was open season to gather around and insult it.

But to me, it's not even what they're doing that is the real crime. It's the attitude they have that they aren't a bunch of assholes, in truth, they're good people doing a service. I'd have some respect for these sites if they were a little more honest about it. "Yes, we are assholes. We don't care if we hurt your feelings. Our witty humliiation is so much more valuable than your self esteme."

But I've seen these sites argue with people who say, "How can you be so mean?" defending themselves to the point where they come across like not only do they want carte blanche to be able to pick on whoever they want, but they also want someone to elect them for Sainthood in the process.

Now, these people love to preach the message of "Grow a thick skin!" or "You shouldn't be so sensitive!" If these people are so tough skinned and so not sensitve, then why the need to defend themselves violently? Why not just laugh and say, "Why did we pick on your fic? Because we're assholes and we don't care about your feelings!"

I actually have a grudging respect for self-admitted assholes. I have no respect for assholes that want to be considered saints.

MST3K are a group unto themselves. I've seen some that are good, I've seen some that are thinly veiled excuses to rip somoene apart and aren't even the tiniest bit funny.

My problem with MST's are that a lot of peple who do them have a rule that they won't MST any fic where the writer wants them to.

Friend of mine had an archive and she had one rule on MST's, and that was "Get the original author's permission." She even had authors who wrote on their fics, "I don't mind if you want to MST them."

She got letters from MST writers complaining that it wasn't fair to demand they got the authors permission. That the WHOLE POINT was that the writer didn't want it to happen.

Yet, like much of the godawful crowd, etc. they didn't want to be considered mean people. Or that their hobby might be seen as mean.

If someone is writing MST's not to be mean to the writer, then why should it make any difference if the writer says its okay to write them or not? If it matters, then obviously, the idea that someone's feelings might be hurt by this is part of the "thrill."

MST, when it comes down to the last line, is a sort of teasing. It's just to the extent to which it is carried that can turn a typically fun thing into something very damaging, and unfortunately that can be easily done over the internet where there are no faces: just computer screens.

I'll come out and say that I love MSTs. What I do not love is the fact that some people get pissed off at work/school/toilet seat then sit down at the computer and vent annoyance by being pricks to other people, just as Melody said.

Then again, for fun I MST my good friend, rayemars. She does the same to me, and we love it because we understand it's in good nature. If we MST other people we do it privately where it won't end up somewhere on the web.

So, yeah, there are websites out there solely for the purpose of hurting people by parading about amateur fan fiction and making fun of it. My money goes on that if the authors of those writings were standing next to them in real life these little tarts wouldn't dare say half the things they do on the internet. The sense of anonymity one recieves while cowering behind a keyboard gives a sense you can say anything you want. Afterall, there aren't any other real people in the world doing this: it's just you on your computer.

Bull shit.

If you're going to MST fanfiction at least work up the balls to ask the author first. If you can't do that then you're obviously not the stoney bitch you say you are.

So even though I do thoroughly enjoy MSTs I will conceed that they need to be done responsibly with consideration to the feelings of the author. I do hope that those who do not care for MSTing will not apply the 'absolute bastard' label to everyone who does it though, because there are some of us who do actually realize that there are consequences of mishandling other peoples' fan fiction.

Both Meldoy Fate and Acita, you guys are totally right.

Melody, that whole bad haircut analogy, that's kind of how it happened with my fanfics over at Godawful. That Dagmar Buse bitch I mentioned earlier, who probably thinks she's the Goddess of MMPR fanfic writing rolleyes.gif , 95% of it consisting of smut and slash(Jesus Christ, how much Viagra did you ingest woman?!) she basically pulled that same shit trick. "Hey look at this! Some author named DuranDuranfan4life(my FF.net name) wrote a bunch of crapfics! Let's gather around and rip her a strip!".

Really? dry.gif

Maybe I should say to her that she's only got 2 decent fics under her belt, and that the rest were about as boring as my morning staff meeting today. sleep.gif

Unfortunately, MST's have gotten a bad rep and yeah, some people will throw everyone who does them into the "asshole" catagory. I know that some people don't do it to be mean, I know that a very small group of these writers really do mean it all in fun and might even prefer to have the author's permission before doing them.

Acita, I'm with you 150% on the "You wouldn't be half as mean in real life" analogy. My friend calls this "Cyberballs," the joke being that the moment anyone is safely tucked away behind a computer screen, male or female, they immedietely grow enormous balls that disappear the second they hit the "Turn of computer" button.

What kills me is that often the worst of the lot are offline victims of bullying themselves. I swear, it's almost like the child abuse circle. "If you're a victim of child abuse, you're several times more likely to grow up to be a child abuser." Well, seems that if you're a victim of bullying, you're more likely to find ways to be a bully yourself. Isn't it nice that mankind has supposedly been evolving and we're still at the point where our reaction, when someone throws shit as us, is to turn around and throw shit at someone we feel is more defenseless than us?

Melody, that whole bad haircut analogy, that's kind of how it happened with my fanfics over at Godawful. Since I don't know this person, I can't judge why she picked on your fics. I do know that there are some folks who really don't see where this is so bad. They use the defense, "But we're not picking on the writer, we're picking on the story! That's completely different!"

To which I reply, "Really? Then you shouldn't mind if I pick on anything you create right? It wouldn't bother you in the least if you invited me for dinner and I went about saying, "I hope you have a stomach pump cause this stuff looks like crap!" and then made fun of every dish you served me, making oh-such-witty remarks like, "Tomato sauce? I swear woman, it looks like you squeezed out your menstrual pads!" After all, I'm not insulting you only the meal you cooked. You shouldn't be offened at all, in fact, you should really be laughing, because my humor is hysterically funny and if you don't think so, well, you're the one with the problem, not me."

Like it or not, writing is a very personal thing to the writer. Yes, I know, even professional writers have to take their lumps from critics, but there is a bit of a difference between an honest (even brutally honest) critism and "let's gather 'round and insult this fiction in what we hope is a witty way!"

With an honest criticsm, at least you know the person cared. They may hate your work, but at least they cared enough to get mad about it. At least they're taking it seriously.

But what those sites are doing isn't trying to help the writer and I'm tired of hearing that defense too, when called on it. They want the writer to feel ashamed of what they wrote. They want everyone to have a good laugh at someone elses expense. But rather than admit it, instead they pull this attitude like if the victim was really a decent sort, not an oversensitive, hyper baby, she'd read this and by gump, she'd learn from it and grow from it. And if she doesn't, well, she's the one with the problem.

You cannot tell me for one minute that any of those places are doing it in hopes of making better writers out of these people. You cannot expect me to believe these people aren't doing it to be vicious or without any contemp for the writer, but only to help that writer grow as a person and realize her mistakes and blah blah blah.

If that was the case, then they wouldn't set up their own website to do it. They would send their little remarks right to the author. Instead, they run off to do it in front of an audience, trying to gather up their little army of supporters. In fact, they get positively annoyed if the writer comes along and defends herself. "That isn't the point!"

So, what is the point? To pick on this person's work but to never have to worry that some might find your teasing to be mean? What the hell is that? Of course it's mean. And to feel that someone who's being picked on is supposed to just roll over and take it? That's just crazy. That's just saying, "We love to pick on people, but we hate being picked on."

To this day, I have no idea why she singled me out and handed my stories out to be slaughtered. Oh well, at least there are people on FF.net whose reviews far outweigh the negativity. I mean, when I had a chance to glance at the thread where my fics were being picked apart, I found only about four people, other than her, participating.

I don't know if you're a fan of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, but if you want, you can check out my fics to see what you think.

My name there again, as I mentioned earlier is DuranDuranfan4life. I just wish I had a copy of the thread at Godawful where my stories were "reviewed", so that you could compare my stories to what was said there, to see if their comments were warranted. But since the site renewed it's boards, all the stuff from July-August 2005 is gone.

As for that defense you brought up, yep, I've seen it said over there too.

I have mixed feelings about those kinds of sites. On one hand I'm a horrible, rotten, black-hearted person that is sometimes comforted by the evil reviews done by others when it comes to badfic. I've read tons of horrible fanfiction, especially these days since I've been looking for decent fics for a partiuclar pairing in my latest fandom fixation. I mean, I can count on my hand, the good stories I've read and sadly, a portion of those are unfinished and abandoned. Since I have a nugget of humanity left in me, I seldom I leave bad reviews. (The only time I did, it was because of the authoress's offensive comments about erotica writers and some other pretentious, self-congradulatory commments about her characterizations.)

On the other hand, I'm terrified of finding one of my fics there. Granted, most of my oldest, worst fanfiction was lost when Chris Carter decided that "X-files" fanfiction was evil and bad and sicced his lawyers on many sites, but there is some bad stuff still floating around out there (circa: high school, age:18, I'd just discovered gay erotica.....). And of course since I have the self-esteem of a rock, I'm afraid that even my most recent stuff could garner hatred for one reason or another. Have I mentioned that I am very paranoid? ph34r.gif

I figure I have a clean slate since the only things I MiST are my own previous fanfiction failures. It really is eye-opening to try and figure out just what the hell I was thinking, but I also admit to being really brutal on my old self. It's all Sonic the Hedehog too, so you just know it's good! I've never really had them in an archive, save for Web Site Number Nine. I wonder if I should re-invest in a site.

Back when WSN9 was in full swing, it was pretty much understood that works weren't MiSTed unless the author agreed. that was a tenant of the whole shebang. I can't very well deny myself, if just for the chance to poke fun because I love. It was never about ganging up and picking on people.

MiSTing really used to be about loving the fandom and making light of the fandom. It was less about attacking a writer's abilities, although that was always an element in itself. Unfortunately, some people just get malicious, and that's when it stops becoming fun.

wow, man, this topic is like, so over my head.

I just read your guys' words and like, wow. They were words, alright.

"Incredibly idle people wrote this."

"The excitement in my day was preceded only by my death."

"The cruelty I wish to express will send me to hell, so I will refrain from expressing it."

"In order for you to grow as an author, you must cease and desist until you've read this peice at least ten times out loud to you mother."

I just love making up nasty reviews. And until now, I've kept them to myself. As to whom they pertain, think nothing of it. They are written purely for the words that are strung together so cleverly they are mezmerizing.

I think one of the golden rules of MiSTing, though, is to avoid attacking the grammar or spelling ad naseum. If you really only lay into their ability to compose a sentence, it detracts from the badness that's in the, say, story, cohesion, transitions and characters.

I was watching Space Mutiny the other day. Effin' brilliant.

I never saw the appeal of MSTing. Why read crapfics in the first place? The moment I see something stupid like Hermione being a stripper I just click on the back button right away. tongue.gif I'm not a masochist.

I'd rather that people review the good fics and make lots and lots of sites about them. It's just so damned hard to find a really good piece of fanfiction, 98% of it is crap, mediocre or unfinished.

MiSTing, for me, has always been about loving the fandom so much that you have to roast it -- the best recourse is to rip open poorly written fiction. Namely, my own fiction.

A couple of years ago these two Gundum Wing fic writers who go by Mel & Christy wrote a rather cute story by the name of "Bish Hunter Duo" that another girl plagerized and turned into a mary Sue.

This is what they did in response.

While they hardly update anymore, I still love they're stories and think this is HILARIOUS.
