I'm so tired of people calling me a troll because I have an opinion differing from their own.

I told this teenager that being bisexual is a fad, and suddenly everybody in the IRC channel started calling me a troll.

Trolling: Stating an opinion differing from your own just to get a reaction and piss people off.

Opinion: Stating something you believe.

I forgot that channels with religious people or people who pretend they're gay/bi are shitstorms if you mention either. He said I insulted all bisexual people by calling it a fad. That's like if I had gone back into the 80's and called spandex and big hairstyles a fad, and it had offended everybody with big hair.

Or if I called hippies a fad.

Look how those turned out. Do people still do it? Yeah, there's some hippies still, there's people who still walk around in spandex and giant hair. Is it popular like it was back then? No. It was a fad.

In 5-10 years do you think Emo will still be as popular as it is nowadays? Do you think every school will have a bunch of supposedly bisexual people? No. Will there still be emoes? Yeah sure. Will there still be bi people? Of course. It's still a fad.

Hell, I bet this guy who freaked out at me (He called me an immature, close minded idiot.) has never dated a guy outside of his highschool. He just says he's bi because he thinks it makes him cool.

Just... FUCK.

I seem to be the only person there without a stick up my ass. Everybody's way too fucking serious about EVERYTHING.

Agreed, because well, I'm with you, it is a fad.

Most people react strongly to any opinion that differs from their own and take that difference as slander.

The minute you express your opinion (be it true or not) for the soul purpose of insulting or getting a rise then it is trolling.

Who ever you wrote this to is free to express themselves as to why bisexuality is not a fad and that would also be an opinion not trolling.

There is a saying, "opinions are like asshole everyone has one."

I'm not. I fucked Allah up his asshole last night and he choked on my nut hair and was like "KKKYYYYAAAAAHHHH, KYYYYAAAAHHHH!!!!"

And that is a good example of a trollish comment. Not really an opinion, just an offensive comment. What was the point of it besides pissing off someone with religion?

I do really hate it when you have the freedom to have your own opinion as long as you agree with everyone else.

Obviously the people you were talking to are very immature. Where in the hell do you meet people because you don't have the best track record.... And yes, there's no reasoning with religious people.

I meet people on the internet. :3

And yeah. As long as I agree with them everything is all hunky dory, but if I disagree I get the "Who cares what you think? You hate everything." talk that they're so fond of.

Man, anybody notice how racist this smiley is? :o

the internet has given millions of people a voice that they never would have had in times past. because of that, people think their opinions matter to other people. in the real world, few people associate heavily with those of vastly different opinions and hang out with mostly like minded people. this happens on the internet too, forums are started and if there is no official line of thinking stated, one soon develops.

the difference is in person, most people are conditioned to either respect the opinion of another or leave the situation semi-gracefully. on the internet, everyone develops a severe case of asperger's syndrome and any contrary view is taken as a direct attack then shouted down.

Hahahaha, that was my point. Or was it? Maybe some people would find what I said humorous, maybe some wouldn't. It all boils down to a matter of opinion. That's what I was trying to illustrate. Or maybe I was just trolling, who knows, its quite the enigma.

If there's always an official line of thinking in a forum then how do you explain this one? While we are all either writers or readers of fan fiction, this place is a mix of different people with differing opinions. The only opinion that seems to be shared here is that we all have the right to write what floats our boat, and that isn't even shared by everyone

I would say one hasn't emerged yet for this forum b/c its barely used. there seem to be less then 50 regular posters. but look at any large forum and you'll clearly see them.

What I see most of the time is lots of arguing. The more users the worse it gets. True, most people are drawn to any given forum or group by a specific thing, but that's where the similarities stop. More often than not someone will state an opinion that rattles someone else's feathers and they'll get their clique to verbally bash said offender. It turns into classic mob mentality.

Give me a fucking break, the reason people lable others as a troll for having a different oppinion is smiply becauase it is easy. Its an easy low blow becasue trolls are universilly hated. So just lable your enemy as a troll. Jesus, its no different than other low blows like comparing some one to Hitler, calling them "gay" or other such bullshit. Its like how the conservative garbage call Obama a socialist, its just a cheap, bullshit thing to say because they don't have a relivant way of brining him down.

Yeah, "Troll" has become a popular defense word, using it immediately, as the above poster said, causes the target to look petty or mean. It's similar to how "fact" has changed from being something that is absolutely 100% true to "an opinion stated loudly and in a sense where any differing opinion is wrong".

The previous question of "A certain community having a line of thinking" is very prevalent on the GuitarHero message board "Scorehero". There you get into arguments if you disagree that Harmonix is infinitely better than Neversoft, and if you disagree that Guitar Hero 2 is the best game in the series.

It's pretty similar to going to a videogame board and saying "I thought Final Fantasy 7 was one of the weaker games in the series". Holy flameshield Batman.

[/off topic] I haven't played a final fantasy game that didn't suck a whole lot of dong.

7 was damn good

6, 8 and 5 were ok

9 was sub par(music was good though)

that's all I've played.

I, too, think the word "troll" is overly used. I've been on the receiving end of it a few times, though and it can be frustrating.

Opinion is one thing - and yes, everyone can have an opinion. I'm a big Neji/Hinata fan in Naruto and many people think it's incest (it's not, but that's another fight). I can understand if someone doesn't like the pairing for a reason (even if, to them, it is incest), but what gets me every time is when they start to attack ME for writing it. They don't HAVE to read it. They know, going into it, WHO the story is about.

Bleh.

Trolling: Stating an opinion differing from your own just to get a reaction and piss people off.

Opinion: Stating something you believe.

It happens. I think people do that because they feel it wins them the argument or maybe just to piss you off. And some are trolls themselves.

I get called a troll quite often, mainly because my opinions tend to differ from the majority and I'm not afraid to speak my mind despite being in the minority. People don't tend to like that I guess. I wouldn't worry about it.

For me, my pet peeve is people not knowing or acknowledging the difference between a flame and a negative constructive review. Anything that isn't butt kissing automatically becomes a flame and it drives me nuts. Personally, when I review, I don't tend to limit myself to 'OMG You are like so frikkin awesome. Your story's the best thing I've ever read' type reviews because really what's the point. Might stroke some ego, but does it really help a person improve as a writer. And I'm getting tired of being called a flamer because I point out the fact that an author could use a beta or that the plot could use a bit of work. Personally, I wish people could spread the word on what actually constitutes a flame because no one seems to know anymore.

Personally, I had to stay away from forums for three years after a group of 5-10 ppl ganged up on me in one forum.

They never called me a troll, just stupid and why wont I leave when I wasn't one of them( yep, was a public, open to all members forum for an international band with 500ish members; but they were the "founder clique" and met once every two years in real life).

Do you know what is really funny. I haven't used that forum in 6 years and I got a staff member personally congratulating my birthday by e-mail this year.

I guess I'm ( after 7 years) worthy enough to be spoken too.

I always hated the fact that I had to wait a couple of years or do something for the forum/website just so ppl can be civil with me.

So everything was okay after me returning online till last year.

Our book based forum colapsed during moderators fights( they went at it manly with blades, everything was allowed) with the admin the forum founder left in charge.

I was away( thank God) and was really confused and sad.

So there was a new forum and I dropped by in it and wondered why haven't they pm-ed/e-mailed members about the new forum.

Only to find out that most general discussion topics reffered to bashing, and undecribeable insulting language towards females( yeah, apparently there are some insults on English you'd have to be in exclusive male company to hear so I had no idea how "males" talk down&about "the bitches" a.k.a the female admins.

So I told him/them to back off, and stop using the language.

Then he/them started trolling after my sparse and far in between posts( I wasn't frequent there, couple of months went from my 2-3 posts) and "attacking" me.

The sad thing about this is that he did not affect me at all.He shot blanks.Jabbed at the wrong places.

They all were so pathetic that I left in the end because I did not want to project them into the real world( start thinking which one of ppl in real life is like them, and I know nothing about it..)

But I have to admit one day( when it started) when I saw all my 6 posts on different subforums/topics trolled with offensive language stating things in which the hair on your arm rises and the bile in your throat with it becasue that is how sick you are from merely the thought that in this world exist ppl who stop at nothing to devalue females and trying to make themselves feel better while hurting others. Now, this particular loser and his friends failed.Big time. But I lost will to be an active member on amy forum after that.I realize it's not really my fawlt. But for Gods sake couldn't they insult me properly( my character or whatever) instead of attacing my gender and using "mantalk"(y'know it's just made it clear how bigoted, stupid and pathetic they really are.Not to forget how miserable they are for having to pretend in front of their mothers/girlfriends/wifes/daughters/and female friends(if they have any) that they're soemthing they aren't(someone capable of using non-gender offenses when feeling beaten/annoyed with himself or others).

But no matter how strong headed and opiniated I am, I deserve the same amount respect I give to others/you.

I do not insult other ppl, period.

And so there is no justification when someone insults me.

And I couldn't give a flying fuck if someone thinks it's okay as long their friends agree with them to go after me.

And just FYI, I don't need ppl to back me up, If I'm a hater I have brains enough to hate on my own:PP

Death to all HAR, HAR.

Hate to burst your bubble, but Obama's policies that he has put in and pushed to get put in are on a socialist agenda. I'm a moderate myself in this area, but still the actions support their statement. So it's not just a low blow anymore. Like it, hate it, don't give a damn, or can't be bothered as one wilt be... It's kinda there.

True, but some bubbles seem to have realized that. So I try to be nice about it. Kind of anyways.

The difference between trolling and opinion is simple evidence. Take the fad scenario, is bisexuality a fad? in and of itself, no. Nature has always had bisexuals. Is bisexuality a fad in modern celebrity circles? yes, most definitely. Without stating which you are referring to (doesn't have to be the celebrity reference) it can appear to an outsider that it is trolling because everyone is clumped together.

I was pretty much treated as a troll the other day for voicing my opinion on horse racing. A friend had stated how everyone that watched or gambled on the grand national was pretty much evil and if there was no money involved we wouldn't watch. I stated that I would because I enjoy the sport then all hell broke loose. I ended up being compared to someone that enjoys dog fighting! How a horse running and having to occasionally jump can be compared to dogs being viciously torn apart is beyond me. Now that is trolling and flaming. There was no evidence to back up why they felt that way other than for them to say "fact" as though that proved their point. If they said the horses are run to exhaustion, some die, the jockeys can be too heavy handed with the whip, they used to shoot injured horses and sell them as horse meat when they were no longer profitable then that would be giving a thought out opinion with merit. A very big difference from just saying people who enjoy horse racing are sick in the head and enjoy dog fighting. fact!
