it all depends on the kind of story you want to write. if you want sex to be something that's major and important to the story, then you need to have a decent amount of build-up, but make sure the sex scene is fitted to the build-up. really, as long as a story is interesting, you don't have to worry about having too much build-up. you just have to make sure that when you write the sex scene, it's a gratifying moment for the reader as well as for the characters.
if it's a one shot, and sex is vital to the central plot, then you don't want to drag out the build-up to the climax.
a rule of thumb i like to use when i'm writing sex and the build-up to it: anticipation heightens the experience.
a good example of build-up is The Nerd by animehead.

all i have to say is that it sucks somebody has the free time to continuously bomb a site like this, particularly when they are supposed to be an adult.
however, thank you so much for quickly, and promptly deleting all of the spam. and i do mean, all of it. if i remember there were over two thousand stories posted between five names, yes? so, great job getting it taken care of as quickly as you could.
that it happened is frustrating, but that you took care of it is a great relief.

i never really sit down and plan a story. i'm usually smacked with inspiration as i'm snuggling into my bed.
so i keep several notebooks and colored pens beside my bed to jot things down at night. most of my planning comes from snatches of a scene that i see in my mind and writing around it.
although, a few of my stories i've actually created full outlines for and written out character relationships. other than that, it's not really complicated. i never do a lot of work when it comes to planning a story out.

the biggest reward i get from writing is that i get to explore different writing styles and i get to find something that fits me best. i found that i prefer to explore emotional aspects of life. i think it allows me the opportunity to grow as a writer, to explore my own creativity and learn more about myself as a writer. i like the way it feels to read through older work and my newest stuff, to see how much i've grown.
although, i have to say that reviews are a wonderful reward as well.

breast cancer is something that's very important to me. so my icon reflects that. self examinations are one of the leading prevention methods available. (and i'm a breast expert and willing to help with that)

first hand experience isn't necessary when it comes to writing. sometimes, really good research and a bit of imagination are all you really need.
let's say you're writing something painfully distressing like abuse. you don't want to have first hand experience. you want to be able to say that you are thankfully distanced from that and your imagination and research are more than enough to write something convincingly enough.
with BDSM fics, the important thing to remember is to think about what you're trying to convey through the story. do you want the shock value that comes so easily with it or do you want to actually try to explore the emotional resonance that completely submitting to another person, or on the flip side, completely controlling another person brings to a relationship. BDSM is more than just tying somebody up and whipping the hell out of them until they say 'Master!'/'Mistress!'
first hand experience in the BDSM world would be most helpful. however it's not necessary. there are a ton of open sites that explain various aspects of the lifestyle. and most of the times, you get opinions from both sides, from the submissive, the slave or the Dominant. you just have to keep in mind that there is more than the 'scene' when it comes to a BDSM relationship. there's more than just beating another person (no matter how consensual). BDSM relationships can be some of the most rewarding relationships available, but there's a lot that has to be sacrificed on both ends.
not everyone is capable of living within the BDSM lifestyle. but that doesn't mean that you can't write about it. imagination goes an incredible distance in crafting a great story.
personally, i use a lot of personal, first hand experience in my fics. but i also use a lot of research and studying. there's a ton of wonderful things, a lot of scary things available out there, but at the same time, there's a lot of interesting things to explore. and you can never learn anything about something new without a little bit of research. (if that makes sense!)
that's my opinion, and i'm sorry i rambled a little bit!

i post here on aff, obviously.
as a lot of the things that i write happens to be yaoi/slash, i post on y!gallery.
and a lot of the stuff that i write at the moment is in the naruto fandom so i also post on TONFA.
i used to post on ff.net, but an incident with a troll who tried to steal one of my stories has caused me to be a bit more leery. and ff.net's response to the incident, and tons of proof that it was mine first, has decided that i won't be posting new stories there anymore.

the CONTRO sounds like a good idea, but i think it needs to be used as an optional choice. it would be nice if somebody was going to write something controversial and warn others that they are, but it shouldn't be something adopted as necessary. the biggest problem with that is because what's controversial or offensive to one person wouldn't necessarily be the same to somebody else.
however, that being said, there should be special warning for people who are about to read rape, anything involving minors, death fics (be they murder, accidental, suicidal, or natural), and things involving BDSM. nothing necessarily controversial about a lot of those things, but people tend to get up in arms about the topics the most.

i'm going to re-edit some of my older stories. i need to bring the level of quality in the older fics up to the level i expect of myself with my new ones.
the stories are all completely finished and so there's no time constraints with them.
they are inuyasha, tsubasa, gravitation, and naruto stories. also, most of them deal with darker topics, angst and rape, het and yaoi.

What we're looking for is the best of the best. Anything in the Books archive is open, it's all fair-game (yes, that means yaoi, yuri, het, three-somes, au's, etc.). We're in the process of getting an awards system up and running, and to do that, we need to know what you guys, the readers, find to be the most enjoyable in a story.
