But yeah not getting any feedback has done a number on my motivation and I am no longer in any rush to finish any of my work or post it. I thought about the hook in my 1st chapter but I have to say I think it is sufficient enough for the story itself. Many good reply's here, so i don't wanna repeat the same thing as the other ppl but i guess i can just add a few of my thoughts
Saying that writing about rape is lazy writing is dumb and hypocritical. It’s only lazy if ur being lazy about it, just like with any fucking topic
Now I do encounter a lot of stories that have very disgusting implications about rape. They excuse the act, blame the victim, pretend like some of the most brutal, disgusting torture could be forgiven, glorify it etc. I think this is bad writing and immoral. I do make make distinctions tho between the narrative saying awful things about rape and characters doing it. It depends on the context. And I’m also more lenient on purely pornographic works since they usually tend to be someone’s fantasy. But when u put ur fantasy in a more serious work with plot and characters ur fantasy can’t remain unchanged. I think that then you have to make sure that the narration isn’t excusing the rape or blaming the victim.

No, no...  Murder is warping the minds of the innocent to become mass murders...  Or do I have that wrong?  Maybe I have it wrong...

Oh, certainly, on both counts.  Deny or shooting down the idea of writing rape definitely downplays or dismisses the reality of it.  As you've both said, it happens.  Humanity is not perfect by any stretch of the imagination; it's ugly and disgusting and, at its worst, can be downright appalling.  One only needs to look at the treatment of POWs in war, the homeless veterans, and, indeed, the treatment of everyone in between to see that.  We are a hostile, disturbing race.  If one cannot express that nature, in any form it takes, then what is the point of it all?
Well, there goes my defense...  Honestly, officer, the books told me it was okay!
Purely pornographic depictions of rape, without offence intended, GG, to me, fall under a different category all the same.  But no, even there, I wouldn't call it lazy or otherwise.  One has to formulate and write it in a way that is just enough to draw the readers in, but not enough to turn them away.  I haven't done purely porn, so I only have my experiences to fall back on here (feel free to throw tomatoes)...  It's been hard for me, probably because I don't write it, to craft a convincing scene while keeping it just disturbing enough without overdoing it.  (I think I had you read it, CR, as Beta...but I could be mistaken...)...  And I'm still worried I'm pushing too far...  (but that's what A/Ns are for, right?  And tags...)
"Oh, YEAH!" the Koolaid man cried, smashing through the wall.  "Now suck on me straw!"
    And to end…
Certainly, there's no laziness in it.
While I would say advancing character or plot (or romance) is something it should do, having the gratuitous rape scene to remind the reader of the world, to shock them, or even remind them of the characters in this world, is just as valid.
    Am I rambling again?

Oh god… Yeah, I’ve read articles like that too (possibly the same ones you found). It generally annoys me when people call anything in writing ‘lazy writing’ unless they’re talking about netspeak and lack of research in subjects where research is sorely needed. Rape is such a sensitive subject, and there’s a lot of people who justifiably avoid reading things with rape in it. No one should have to read shit that makes them uncomfortable or triggers anxiety/panic attacks. That being said, it’s not lazy writing. Neither is writing anything that might shock your reader, in my opinion. When I read a story, I like if it shocks me. I like if it makes me feel gross sometimes or sick sometimes and reminds me how damned ugly people can be sometimes. Rape happens. It seems insulting to me to deem a horrifying act that happens way too damn often and with so much history and weight on it ‘lazy’ or just ‘shock value’. Like it feels like it dismisses it to me, you know?

@Wilde_Guess If you self pub, you’d be paying.  However, if you’re not too picky about quality and skip the editor, and it’s relatively inexpensive with something like CreateSpace (an amazon thing).
@Anesor A laundry list of spelling/grammar does mean they’re reading your story   Feedback, as a whole, means they’re interested.  As @Tcr stated, a lack of feedback can be nasty, and that’s when I use dragon prints as a fallback, as I figure a large jump in numbers between chapter/episode postings hints at some level of interest.
@sweetmamajama  I try to review when I read.  I’m just more of a writer here as I find it more fun playing in my own sandbox.  I had a beta for a little while, but then she got busy and now I post without it.

My favourite reviews are the ones full of analysis. Where they ask questions or ponder events that occurred, or when they question motives or make guesses at what will happen after a cliffhanger. I love it when they say why they love or hate characters and who they think the chars should hook up with. Those are the reviews I go back to years later for a little motivation when I'm lacking. Of course, I love the concrit, the blatant praise, and the quick li'l, "plz rite more"s too.

Feedback affects my stories, but often in indirect ways.  Critical reviews don’t bother me the way they used to, partly because it’s often clear they are bringing some huge bias by what they say. I can’t stop that. One troll went away after I thanked them for a page length list of spelling and grammar. I got some outrage and anger on my first story, and I tried to diplomatically tell them to flake off when I calmed.  More recent I try to tag what might set people off, and haven't really had any  jerks in years.
Confused readers are either explained in a reply or I may make a fix. The last irate one came from when a reader thought my lead hated an entire class of people. I was already fice chapters ahead and I was confused. After a little back and forth when I asked what gave them that impression (many reviewers never reply when you do want to fix it) and it ended up being basically pronoun confusion. They thought the lead was hating the slaves, instead of the slavers. A couple chapters later they included a comment that they liked the changes.  One or two commenters, by their language they are very young or have developmental issues… so I’m just glad they’re reading, period.  And feedback comes in where I'm wondering if they read the story I wrote. An early confused person accused the story of a kink I would not write...
Sometimes I may do minor shifts if some feedback gives me an idea that sparkles. I don't make structural changes from feedback.
Selfpub is a blessing and a bane. there is no longer an excuse for a wannabe writer to complain about the pressure of finding a publisher. It is a lot more work today, even if you have a pub. I could not believe an aspiring writer couldn’t find any ideas… My files of ideas keep growing faster than I can write...
I adore insightful comments that a reader is thinking about events and what's happening off camera or might be coming. That they get the themes or subplots I’m building. I also really appreciate if someone points out an accidental grammar or spelling problem.
Feedback affects much more in longer stories. and hits aren’t really enough warm fuzzies for my muse. I’ve pulled very few stories, because of my own dislike or career plans.  One shots or three shots, I’m just not as emotionally invested in the feedback.   The bigger issue is that a total lack of feedback just kills my motivation to continue when the writing gets tough from block or RL. I had a DA2 story that just withered and died. I knew how it was ending the schroedinger’s viscount problem. No one else seemed to care enough to read for several chapters, so I didn’t care enough to write it. I have plenty of other ideas. (I’ve written about 200k in a different fandom since this)

On the good side I found out a college bud I lost touch with is a part-time editor, but I haven't decided how stalker or pitiful I want to appear when I ask.

Absolutely, lack of feedback makes me change stuff! Sometimes the change is as simple as pulling the story. Sometimes it gets more complicated as I attempt to read the minds of readers to figure out what the problem was. And seeing as how I’m a pretty shitty psychic, I end up changing a lot of things in a panic until the story is unrecognizable or just not what I wanted to begin with soooo either way it’s usually a terrible decision on my part lol. But doubt does that to me. Makes me make terrible decisions.

Alright, so, as the title says, does a lack of feedback affect your stories?  (Ie while you’re writing, does the lack of feedback make you change things, doubt things, et cetera, et cetera?  And vice versa, does a lot of feedback affect you?  Do you change things that you probably wouldn’t have based upon those words?)  This is probably a question that’s been asked before, don’t throw the pineapples (they kind of hurt), but…
As for me, so far I’d say not really (in terms of changing things that otherwise wouldn’t have been).  The lack of feedback on a lot of mine does make me question certain decisions, as I’m sure everyone does when faced with that same thing…  For example, I know people are reading them (...unless they’re accidentally clicking into it and getting out of there as fast as possible…  I’m going with the former, though), but lately I’ve been debating the… slow burn of one of them…  Introducing and trying to create likeable characters that everyone wants to see survive through with the interactions that ring true necessitated the long fuse to the dynamite, and it’s been making me question that length.  I’m sure everyone has something like that.

    Okay… so:
I object to having it inferred that I don’t know the difference between fiction and reality. I do. I may at times describe myself as a hobbit, but on official documentation, I tend to go with British, or human if they ask for it (they usually don’t). I object to being expected to feel some kind of additional shame for sexual writing, because frankly, bollocks to that. As someone who has written dark things, and some spectacularly dark themes on despair, I consider that portion of my work falls into the horror/erotica genre, which is perfectly acceptable. While I write fanfiction, a lot of authors who write original fiction have made a lot of money out of that genre. It’s popular enough. No doubt there are people in my life who would be shocked at some of the things I’ve written. Just because I can touch them, doesn’t make a difference. Don’t like, don’t read still applies in their case. I have no intention of changing anything about myself merely for the sake/comfort/enjoyment of others. Ever. Frankly, bollocks to that too. Life is too short for that nonsense. As to you, OP (ForgetMeNaught), I have no idea what you wrote, or of your problems, then or now. I would simply ask that you do not include others in them. You may have changed your mind on what is acceptable, and you are free to do so, but your change in opinion does not mean you should come here and accuse this community of being sordid, distasteful and reprehensible. Nor should you come here and urge others in this community to stop enjoying their activities here. Your issues are your own. I wish the best of luck with them.
    That is all.

As an author, I have to agree entirely with @Desiderius Price on this. Fiction is exactly that: fiction. What I write is not reflective of my life, or my beliefs, or my personal desires. I can, like the vast majority of writers, tell the difference between the imaginary worlds I create, and the reality in which I live. Stephen King is a genuinely nice guy in real life. I had a friend who lived on his street, so that is not conjecture, but rather a factual statement. (Not to mention his corgi, who is known as the Thing of Evil… )
The people I love all know what I write, and to be extremely blunt, I don’t write porn. It’s not about the sex, but I don’t always fade to black when sex happens. If people find that upsetting, they are more than free to pass over my work, here and as published. Seriously. I don’t expect everyone to buy my books, and fawn over me (like the rather promiscuous James Patterson, who is the biggest review whore on the planet).
And to be honest, this reminds me of when a bartender I knew decided to go on the wagon, and would lecture me about having a drink while pouring me a double shot when I’d asked for a light drink. It was even more annoying than when he quit smoking, and would lecture me about that habit as well. I’m an adult, and I am responsible for my own life, and own decisions

I agree, wasnt too sure what to make of this but after the 5th time reading it (Yes I did) because something felt off, it sounds like to me that someone has high opinions about things and feels they are icky and sick, well guess what buttercup, thats the real world.
So you told someone it was ok to do bad things ….. your a dick, even if you told them to do good things, its still their choice to or not to do it.
Fiction is just that, fiction, its not real but can use real world things in any number of ways. Its up to the reader/viewer to understand that it is just a story/show/game, if you can not tell the difference, you need to have your head examined.
Frankenstein, Dracula, Sherlock Holmes, The three billy goats gruff, all just stories
I have a story that is and will involve torture, does not mean I want people to suffer from it or to do it myself, its all about plot and story, if anything in a story makes your skin crawl, and its that kind of a story, good job.
if its something simple and just a life style thing or what have you, thats too bad.
there is nothing wrong with making content that is shocking, dismaying, hurtful, appalling, or outrageous. once a pon a time, it was seen as scandalous if a woman showed her ankles, look at the world now.
if you are emulating something from a movie that is hurtful to people or yourself, physically or mentally, yeah get help, but if its just the narrow minded views of someone else, the world will eat them for lunch.

    To the original poster,
Having seen people just vanish, this announcement, in the least, will be around for when others come asking.
Your statement is a rather broad statement, implying that people are incapable of distinguishing fiction vs reality.  That you carried fiction into reality when you shouldn’t have, I do wish you learn from this, but your overall reaction seems a bit of a knee jerk.  If you’re implying what I think you’re implying, that you become what you write/read, then I should be highly suspect of all Agatha Christie or Sherlock Holmes fans as very shady people.
We all have somebody around us who’s on that end of the spectrum where even we try to be “family friendly”, they’d find our work to be irreprehensible.  The only way to avoid that is to simply not write, not create, and the world would be a much duller place.

Well, at least he made his reasons for leaving clear so all his readers don’t have to wonder? Of course, he also made unfounded judgements and claims about everyone on this site. People he’s never met. I dunno why I’m saying he, maybe it was a woman, or somewhere in between; I’m not sure that matters. I’m not really offended by it, I’m just baffled and incredulous, because of how fricking presumptuous their rant was.
In my case, yes, my family would be shamed if they found out what I write. My family is made up of seventh day adventists and uber catholics and bigots. They’d be ashamed of me if they knew I was a feminist, or if they knew I was pro-choice, or if they knew I didn’t believe in a cosmic hierarchy. Or even if they knew I didn’t completely hate the Canadian prime minister lol. The pro-choice thing would probably horrify them more than the writing smut thing. (My grandmother founded a pro-life movement in our area.)
Writing smut and violence is healthy. Unless you’re a psychopath and what you’re writing is actually your personal memoirs about rape and cannibalism… It’s therapy. At least for me. It’s a way to vent. I hope y’all never feel ashamed of the depraved things you enjoy writing and reading. People on this site are a million times more creative and open-minded and kind and supportive than any of the anti-smut people I’ve known.
