I've read it for you, Bronx, and to be honest, you kept the same rugged flavor that caught my imagination in the first short novel in tact. Second novels rarely live up to the first novel's potential. The fact that you maintained the ancient cultural hints and capitalized on them made the story. Seeing the undertones of prejudice and fear of knowledge was very believable. SO yeah, it was a great reading story due to those nuances.

    Hello,
I'm not new-new but I've been lurking while slowly feeling out the forums and beginning to interact.
I'm AquaTonic on AFF, I joined when I initially started to venture into writing more mature content than was appropriate for FF.Net. I've been writing since I was about 12 or 13, starting with fan fiction and then progressed into wanting to write something of my own. Because I had a huge horde of fan fic ideas, I wanted to finish those but decided I can rearrange the plot to make it into an original fic instead. I have one fan fic left to finish and then I'm purely dedicated to my own original works.
It's nice to meet everyone and I hope to get to know you more as I start being more active on the forums!

I didn't start writing until 6th grade when one of my teachers pulled out pictures and as a project, we were to write something around that picture and describe it. I fell in love with doing that, discovered fan fiction on the internet, and my fate was sealed! My cousin and I had binders full of stories we'd create together. First our own, and read them to each other a chapter at a time, and then we started writing together.

I may post a semi-raw chapter to give readers something to look at if I have not been posting much because of the real world situations that happen, but I replace such chapters as soon as is humanly possible with grammatically repaired versions. I tend to use human speak in dialog because people don't use proper grammar when they talk to each other as a rule. However, I am very strict with my own writing when it comes to all other elements.
To my thinking, grammar checking programs are the most important tool any writer can purchase. I have never had interest in cell phones or text message programs of that classification. On facebook, I am constantly lost when I run into text speak outside of the terms LOL, ROFL, WEG, and LMAO. I avoid text speak because I have never understood what was attractive about it. Laughter is one of my favorite things, so I do tend to abuse the above terms. Also, I loved the Weird Al song. Word Crimes made me laugh a lot so thanks for sharing that one @GeorgeGlass.
I have seen a number of text speak stories on various sites across the web. Because I do not know the lingo, I must back pedal to find a different story. In some respects, the lost art of grammar is a sad statement about how our society has become fixated on doing everything faster, and more efficiently to the point it no longer has any meaning at all. We are losing too much of what once made civilization great. Fast and gratuitous actions only seems to increase the pressure of consume more ideals that are sold constantly on the radio, and on televisions around the globe. Civilization is losing a lot of what made it special because of the lost art of grammar usage I believe.

Not only is your idea possible, but highly likely if the woman has not learned how to desensitize herself to overcome the trauma of her past. The escaped woman would be paralyzed by her past when facing her previous master without warning, especially if she hears trigger words or phrases, or sees items that she could not defend against during captivity. Post Traumatic Stress tends to blind a person to the now they are standing within, and their brain misfires so they believe they are in a much different place and time where they cannot fight back in many cases. The sight of a specific item can also cause the same extreme reaction that throws the person mentally into another time mentally when they were completely unable to protect their lives and bodies. Smells can also cause the same thing to happen. I've heard of combat vets returning from war who flip out over smelling burned gun powder used in fireworks. They think they are back in a full blown war zone without any way to escape mentally so long as the smell of gunpowder is present. If you learn about PTSD, you'll find many different triggers to choose between and utilize unfortunately.
Hearing repeated phrases from a period of extreme vulnerability/defenselessness before learning how to defend herself would throw her mentally back into that period before she learned to be strong and to defend herself. I survived abuse in my marriage when I was younger. My family rescued me and my infant son. they had to make sure that as the divorce proceeded, the beast could not see me without their presence. His words and smell caused flashbacks to happen to me with my ex until I found a way to break my responses to said triggers, and heal from the past so I did not have hard flashbacks that blinded me completely any longer. Abusers love to repeat certain types of phrases as a rule, so I could totally see the scenario playing out that you suggest. The hardest part of any healing is simply learning what the trigger phrases and words were so the victim can fight the habit of losing consciousness of where they actually are at that point. Desensitizing is difficult, but it can be done. Hope that helps you out somewhat.

The thing is, I'm almost done the book by the time this happens. The woman in question is a supporting character in the book, with not that many scenes. Her being confronted by her previous master - who is my book's main vilian, but for different reasons - was a plot twist I added in at very nearly the last few minutes of the book. I plan on expanding on her story and following where this plot twist goes in a later book. I do admit that there is very little in the way of foreshadowing her trauma leading up to the confrontation, but that is what I think adds to the mystery of it all.
Basically the woman (Isabella) is a friend the hero's - the main male protagonist - and very close to end of the book, she is searching a mansion where the hero has gone earlier, trying to help him. The antagonist (Edward) of the whole book is on his way of the final escape, when he sees Isabella, recognizes her, and uses his power over her to aid in his escape, taking her along with him. Isabella *could* fight him off, but because of her past history with him and the sudden shock of him being there and holding a gun to her throat (which my character could defend against had she the will do to so) throws her into a trigger where she becomes helpless to refuse him, like she was trained do as a child and teen while being a slave to him.
The whole event is supposed to act as a suprise and an almost-to-end final plot twist that will lead into further books and stories.

That's the most important thing, anyway. And its usefulness will be enhanced by the fact that AFF uses standardized tags instead of just having people type in their own, like some sites do (so that you get different results if you search "M/F," "male/female," or "male_female"). That was a wise move on someone's part.

I'm going to offer a completely unscientific opinion, and say that it depends on your target audience.
We have readers who come here to be titillated, who are interested in the sex, and the kinkier the better. Stories are no more than wank fodder for these readers, and that's fine. They are the readers who look for tags that suit their interests, and will click on and read anything with the appropriate tags.
Then we have readers who want plot, and they are willing to wait for the sex as long as they're engaged by the author, and feel like the characters and plot are compelling. These readers might offer reviews that suggest plot developments or pairings, but they aren't motivated solely by the sex. They might even read a story tagged No-sex if the summary is compelling enough.
The tags I think are crucial in a summary are the pairing tags (M/F; M/M; F/F; 3Plus) because some readers are not fond of certain gender pairings, and get irritable if they encounter slash when they expected het, and the trigger tags (Minor1/Minor2; Incest; Rape) because these particular content markers are the ones we'll hear about fastest if they're missing.
My suggestion is to write a short (150 words or less) blurb about your story. Then distill that to one strong sentence of Twitter length. That sentence is your summary, and leaves you enough space for the most crucial codes. Use the longer summary as the AN in the first chapter. We allow up to 600 words, but 150 is a good length without becoming boring. If you have oral sex cropping up in chapter 3, you can add a line at the top: "Additional Warnings: Oral" and no one can say they were not warned. That's entirely within the guidelines here, and in fact, it works well for many of our authors who hate giving away too much with tags.
