I agree it's hard to swallow your pride and take concrit. But if you want to improve as a writer, you need to be able to put your emotions to the side and analyze your work more objectively than that. Needing to improve does not make you a failure. Allowing concrit to turn you away from even trying is failure, because you've let yourself become defined by what you are (a writer) as opposed to WHO you are.

"take tea at Brown's" is also a euphemism for a somewhat unhygenic act.

I was just reading a story on this site - no point saying which one because it applies to many. We get a chunk of the writer chatting about the story, then the chapter, then another chunk apologising for the writer's shortcomings.
It detracts. If the end of the chapter is particularly good, it can ruin it.
Maybe it is just me. I am the person who never wants to watch the programmes about how films were made. I leave the DVD explaining all the ins and outs in the box. I want to lose myself in the story, not have it explained to me.
So my plea is this. If you as an author cannot resist writing about the chapter, separate the commentary from the body of the chapter. The site allows you to put in a horizontal line. Please use that or something similar.
Give people like me a chance to know when to start and, more importantly, to stop reading.

As this story is now published, by E.L. James, under the title 50 Shades of Grey; and this was/is her old fanfiction pen name, you'll need to prove that you are, in fact, her. We cannot allow a user to pose as another, whether or not the old pen name is being used by that author anymore.

Master of the Universe was published by EL James as a fanfiction. It's still HER original work. You cannot post that here. You cannot attempt to pose as another, as you're obviously doing. Because it started life as fanfiction does not make it automatically public domain.

    Terms of Service
Fanfiction is allowed to exist because of Fair Use. That does NOT make the fanfiction the authors post whether now, or in the past, public domain.

As I've said, I began writing over on FFN, and was pointed to AFF to read a fic or two. I also had a few friends from FFN who'd published more explicit work here, and when I wrote my first MA work, this is where it went up.
I'm in the process of cleaning up and posting a fic here that's not at all smut. I've done a batch of oneshots that are no sex. We're about writing, and the freedom to write what you want to write. Adult fiction can engage the mind and challenge preconceptions without always being smut.
Having said that, the smut can be fun as well.

We're delighted to have you here! As a former FFN author myself, I wandered here to publish something that was beyond the FFN ratings limits, and was welcomed so warmly that I never left.

As stated many, many times before JennMarie was deleted for being underage at time of sign up. Not once, but multiple times. She was well aware of the requirement for being 18 or older to join and use the archive. This is NOT a new policy, the age requirement. It's been in place since the site started in 2002. That she consistently flouted that rule is, quite frankly, her issue. That I deleted her content and profile is not an issue, but simply something that HAS to be done with underage users as they're found. Perhaps you've not read the prior posts, but you know, these children who do this don't give a rat's ass about the consequences that their presence can have on the real people behind the site. Which is EXACTLY why we're so aggressive about finding and deleting them and their content. To PROTECT the real people behind the site.
As to dextrousleftie, read this topic. As Apollo pointed out in her answer, there was a valid reason behind the deletion.
We don't play favorites, as I'm sure you can see. There is a Terms of Service in place for a reason. Users who sign up agree to ABIDE by the ToS and Content Guidelines. If someone has continuing difficulties with following that, then yes, eventually they can and will be removed. It is patently unfair to the bulk of the users who do their damnedest to follow and do what they agreed to at sign up, for us to not deal with those who choose not to, repeatedly.

I think reviews are marvelous, and I love getting them. I'm also aware that most of my fandom works aren't in the more "popular" arenas, and the traffic past my little fics is meagre as best. How sad for me, but those are the breaks.
Still, I'll write whether or not I get reviews. But they do make me very, very happy.

Honestly, I don't mind if an author wants to write formulaic stuff. Just don't try and tell me that it's high art, or ask me to pay USD13 for the Kindle version of it.

Having grown up reading authors who played with language to achieve incredibly powerful and evocative prose, I'm loathe to limit myself at all. If I'm going to write a Regency bedroom hopping farce, I might use "quim." If I'm writing something set in the 1970's, when we all strove to shock, I'd use "cunt." If I'm writing a scholarly piece on the experiences during a vaginal birth after caesaerian, I'll go with vagina and cervix. It's all mood and the music of the words.

I used to post on FFN myself, and when my fiction went past the point of heavy innuendo, I came here to publish it. Obviously, I like it here, and although I did pull my work from FFN a while back voluntarily, that was for other reasons not related to content ratings.
But I did read the ToS, and I did agonize over whether or not my innuendo crossed the line. I have teenagers of my own, and I decided that if I wasn't comfortable with them reading what I wrote, then it didn't belong on FFN. Part of being a writer is being able to actually read the rules.

I'm always willing to offer what little I know in terms of my own background and interests. I've worked in finance, and at some rather odd jobs as well such as in a cemetery. I read extensively and love history. I'm working on my skills as a rogue... ::looks at shortbow in closet and lockpicks on desk::

It's worthwhile. Even if you're writing fan fiction, and never hope to profit from it, it's something you put time and effort into. It's a piece of your soul, and having it stolen is a violation. We get that, and we are willing to work hard to keep our site free of plagiarists.
Readers know that if they email us with a report, it will be investigated thoroughly, and it will be dealt with quickly if it is a valid report. It doesn't take thirty people reporting daily for two months to get our attention.
