  3. I think this is a difficult realm really.

As a writer, at first I didn't get any reviews about my grammar or spelling. I got a few when I had format problems but nothing major and I got a beta-reader off my own back who checked the basics for me. However, as my story went on I started getting more critical reviews, pointing out some problems with the fic. I started in 2007 and my writing style has progressed, and I think improved. I got helpful and critical reviews where they made suggestions. I think that's a key word here. being able to suggest things or give advice rather than listing the negatives is a great thing for a writer. (Or at least I think so.) I now have a great beta-reader who 'teaches' me as she edits my work. I'm learning a lot about grammar and punctuation that I didn't know about before. And I thought I had the basics down! I have even had emails in which I was able to throw ideas and questions back and forth about the layout and pace of some chapters. It was really helpful.

    However, from a reader's point of view, I can understand how hard it is to be critical and constructive without sounding critical. There seems to have been a boom recently in young writers, those who have just turned 18. I was talking to one a while back who asked for my advice and opinion on her fic. I edited the first chapter to her and explained where things were wrong grammatically (I am no expert but my beta-reader has been teaching me.) I began to explain that she swaps the tense, (trying to remember an example :S) and the person. So it was;

    'They kept their hands...'

    and in the next sentence it was;

    'then we both screamed..."

I tried to explain this and said that the tense kept being changed from past to present tense but the writer didn't know what I meant by tense.

It leaves you in an awkward situation, because I will never claim that I'm an expert or know that much but I so wana help other writers as a reader and reviewer, like my readers have helped me. I feel my writing has improved from it and I definitely have a better understanding of grammar now. But where do we draw the line? I've had negative reviews before, that make your heart sink. Some are just uncalled for, not constructive at all. You think; why did you even leave a review? why did you read it if you don't like it. (Especially when warnings are up everywhere and suddenly someone is outraged about something that was pre-warned.) I've learnt that you can't please everyone. Every writer should and does write for themselves. So as readers I think we need to respect that and make sure our reviews aren't clouded in self-righteous negativity. I think if you can offer advice in a positive way then the writer will be more willing to take your advice on board.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could all voice our opinions without upsetting each other? ^_^

Thing is it will upset some people. I think reviewers need to be mindful of that but if they think they can help the writer then I think con/crit reviews laden with advice should be left. But remember positives people! Positive reviews with friendly advice! ^_^

  4. Hi there,

Vixen here, the writer of Serpent's Tongues and Lion's Tails.

I don't know if any of my readers are on this forum or not but I wanted to leave a small note.

Sorry for the delay in update. As you've probably guessed it's now up to a very important chapter and I kinda left it on a cliffy but I had no intention of being away so long. You can catch updates and explanations, discussions ect over at my blog- http://serpentstonguesandlionstails.blogspot.com/

I have not just stopped. I have been away and in two days time I have an exhibition of my own to run and set up BUT after these two days I will be speed typing away again to get you that all important update.

Many thanks to all of you for your support and AMAZING reviews. They really took my breath away- such a boost to get a move on with it ;)

Special thanks to SlytherinGoddess who beta reads my fic and also to Withdrawnred over at Hawthorn and Vine for the grammatical corrections.

    :)

BTW I AM LOOKING FOR SOMEONE TO MAKE ME A DRAMIONE VIDEO FOR YOUTUBE.... ANYONE? :( I would love it if you could contact me : Gryffindorgirl2010@hotmail.co.uk

  5. Hi, Willow Darkling here... go by Darkling Willow on AFF.

    Shy, introverted, dreamer.

    Writer.

I usually just hang around my own profile on AFF waiting for my stories to either decide they want some work done, or I find some mistake that needs correcting.

If I'm not there I'm usually loitering around the original, Harry Potter (I suffer from a very bad case of Malfoy fever), or the Supernatural sections. (Yes, awesome-ness in my world is measured in units of Dean, and if that doesn't make sense to you, you probably don't follow Supernatural much. :D )

I only have four stories up as of yet.

Other than that, I don't have a whole lot to say... other than hi, maybe.

    Woop -to Malfoy feverr!!!

When I get some spare time I'm gona jump on over to read your fics if that's ok? ^_^

  6. I don't say what I say to make anyone sad

I say it to help explain why a lot of readers (myself included) will pass up reviewing a fic.

That's not a turn-off. That's not even whoring. Requests (which is what that is) are perfectly fine. Whoring is this: "I'm not going to post another chapter until I have XX reviews." At which point, I'm completely turned off the fic because the author's decided it's not fun to write, it's a chore. If they don't receive quantifiable validation of their efforts they aren't going to spend their time on it. So if it's not worth your time to finish the fic, it's not worth my time to read an unfinished work. One that I know will remain unfinished, because eventually even loyal readers become irate :pissed: at an author's demands.

What you've done is fine. "Tell me how I'm doing" is imminently acceptable - I just tend to not because people don't like to hear that angels don't sing from where the sun doesn't shine. Most fics I read, authors are afraid of :tomato: . I'm more inclined to leave  when the author indicates they actually care about their work. (I just haven't gotten to reading yours yet. You are on my list of fics to get to. It's a long list.)

Haha! No worries about reading it or not. I'm just happy writing it. I'm ill and can't work so it really keeps me occupied. :) It's why it means even more to me to have gotten reviews because I'm soooo tired at the end of the day I know there are going to be mistakes. But if someone points them out to me I've learnt to say thanks and correct it because its human nature to make a mistake and any corrections I make can only help to make it better.

Thanks for getting back to me and clearing up the matter on whether or not it was ok to ask for feedback like that. i've never said, no more fic unless I see more reviews because I feel that isn't why I'm writing. Reviews are just an extra bonus. I can understand to a certain extent why people would write that but I totally understand the turn off it would be to the reader.

I'm really glad you, and everyone else on here were honest about it all. I feel this thread really helped me as both a reader and writer, to take on board the different issues to do with leaving reviews ^_^

  7. Yes a review board would be great and I know of other sites that do them. HOWEVER it must take SO much for the moderators and admin and whoever who work behind the scenes just to keep the site running. Let alone adding fancy technical new features, however much they are wanted.

    As for reviews.

Personally I love getting really indepth feedback, be it critical or not, from my readers. SO I came up with a couple of options.

    1. A new email address. It's free and it was made only for my fanfic purposes so why not ay? It saves the mods lots of hassle and I can talk all sorts with my new email friends.

    2. A blogsite. I'm on http://serpentstonguesandlionstails.blogsp...290500c46920a6b and I've found it really handy to keep my readers up to date (because I have ongoing medical problems/treatment/procedures) when I have to break from writing for example. I've also ended up showing sketches of things to do with my fic and encouraged the readers to submit fanart if they had any and/or wanted to.

    3. I do tend to put a reply to my readers in my author's notes but also understand that its being asked that we don't do that so much anymore because of how much stuff there is on the site (from what I understood anyway.) I also understand what someone else in the thread said about it taking away from the story- especially if you're reading many chapters in one go. However, if a reader hasn't reviewed before and isn't looking for a reply then they can skip it without a problem.

Don't know if this was helpful or not, just saw the thread and thought I'd drop a line. But I think we do have to remember how much work this site must take to run. I think we really don't appreciate the mods and admin staff ect enough.

    B xxx

  8. I thought this was a great thread to read through. It was interesting to get an insight into other people's thoughts and opinions on, not only reviewing but the whole writer vs reader element.

I admit before I started really getting into writing my reviews were short. Even now when I do review, (Not so much anymore but only because I have had no time to read fics because I've been working on my own,) I tend to put only the positive. I will mention the elements that I really enjoyed like if I think they kept the characters true to the original. Or if I felt a certain chapter was really emotive. Sometimes it was just a matter of OMFG that was hot!!!

I agree with everyone when they say they want to here feedback. If things have gone quiet on my fic for a while I often just message to ask if its because of anything inparticular. Or I put in that I am concerned that having taken a certain route with the fic has put people off. I've then had readers message and say I don't like where you took it, I liked it up till now but I won't be reading anymore. To which I thank them because they've been loyal to the story, its not to their tastes, which is nothing personal to me so I'm just thankful that they took the time to tell me.

Even this morning I got a critical email from someone about punctuation and how thoughts and other issues were written and I will admit at first I was filled with dread going oh god I KNEW I was terrible. But I took what they had to say and I took into account that this reader had messaged me in order to help me! I messaged back and truly admitted, writing is NOT my forte. I write for fun. BUT I'm glad she told me about the things that were wrong because I am still learning from it.

Any type of review (as long as its not a REAL flame or a troller leaving it) is great with me. Because you have to admit it is great to get even those short ones that are one line saying they liked it because to me, that a reader took their time to leave it sometimes means more than the content of the review.

I must admit I never knew so many readers felt concerned about leaving a review and this makes me really sad. I know that personally I'll remember what some of the readers said and take it into account when I write my next author's note.

BUT each to their own. We all work differently. We all like different things. Some fandoms get more readers and will get more reviews. I wouldn't take it to heart though because the fact that you've put something up on here for others to read is great. I think as writers it takes a certain amount of courage to post. And I often worry what the response will be to a fic because some people can be horrible about it and flame but at the end of the day just because one person didn't like it it shouldn't put you off writing. At the end of the day if its good crit it may improve your fic and that's great don't you think? As writers we really should want to do our best (although I also understand that some people write solely for fun and not to improve their writing.) If it's a negative review or one you don't take kindly to, ignore it. Just because one person didn't like it it doesn't mean others don't enjoy reading it.

I'm glad this thread got posted because hopefully the writers have taken things into account as well as the readers. I certainly have. I always leave a small message saying: I hope you liked it, please review. But if people think that may be a turn off for readers I'm going to stop doing it. I also hope that readers took into account that most of us don't mind critical reviews though it is nice if they are written with tact. I hope that readers will now feel more welcome to leave bigger reviews. I know that I for one will take into account everything that was written in this thread because it gave a lot of people's insight-which is what this is all about really.

Sorry for the rant. And oh how I laughed about Magi Kavin with the 1 hit is equal to one fap! lol! I am slightly worried now that i've caused over 40,000 faps! I hope not too many of those were the same person! hehehe!

(I also really liked Dannyealle wrote from her blog. Very informative :()

  9. No, it's not a good thing - but as I said above when it happened there or other snark sites I just laughed it off. I recognise I am one of the worst non-intentional-troll-bad writers on this archive (in terms of themes, quality and sheer repetitive dullness) so it would be entirely churlish of me to be annoyed by negative feedback. about half to three quarters of all my reviews have been pure flames of the 'Die In A Fire' variety, and I had previously left them there to show no hard feelings, but now that flames are being deleted as part of the review boards clean up I keep meaning to go back and do my bit by deleting them all, and save the clean up crew a few seconds work!

I'm happy to see that you're taking it in a good light tho and that it hasn't knocked your confidence and taken you off the site

  10. I heard about this.

I think the problem is that there are so many stories out there that authors can't help but have things over lapping. In any magic story you are going to have people saying, you stole my idea because you can only limit yourself to so much.

I.E. I found myself thinking the locket in DHs is like the Ring in LOTR. Do I think she intentionally copied this idea or deserves to be sued? No.

I don't think people who do a romance story about forbidden love and then have the characters die will be sued by Shakespeare. (If he came back from the dead obvs.)

In drama we learnt during our research that there are only actually something like 9 stories and all others are adaptations of these. I can't remember all the info, its all very vague to me now.

It's like I've started reading Fallen by lauren kate and I previously wrote down on DA that I had an idea involving fallen angels, a romance with the son of the devil falling for someone and it all being to do with the fight of heaven and hell. it was all gona go in a manga of mine. And I read it and went, oh bugger.

Its like, you're limited with characters as well. I have a character with black hair and green eyes in my book... Not because he's Harry potter in any shape or form but merely because at the age of fourteen when I started writing it I liked guys with dark hair and green eyes.

Sounds to me like the author is bitter about the fact that JK has done so well and yet their book has not. Yes it's a shame. i understand they must have worked hard. I'd be upset too if I'd published a book that didn't do great and then another came out with strong similarities that took the world by storm.

I hope it comes to nothing. I'm sorry for the author that feels their book was plagiarised. I just don't think it is the case. After creating Potter's world from her own imagination I do not imagine that JK one day decided, fuck I need help, I know... I remember that book... I'll have THAT happen!

    **Sigh** sorry for the rant.

  11. Love, there's a whole forum for this! Nobody minds. :D

Phew! ;) I'm glad you said that. I don't want anyone thinking I'm big headed or anything like that. I genuinely get really nervous on forums because I've read so many negative comments on them before about people pushing their work. But thanks for being so supportive of it :)

    Also I agree with Unitedgravedigger

maelstrom by Rei Rei is great :)

  12. Yep - couldn't find the link before for some reason, but his other one of mine was here:

    http://www.toplessrobot.com/2008/10/fan_fi...nd_the_puss.php

...it was an interesting surprise to come back too after a couple weeks away! I have had my scrawlings violated twice by a droid with its baps out.

On the plus side, I got one of the 20 honorable mentions in the site's Robot Haiku contest!

Wow. I'm not sure what to say. It's an awkward thing. I dunno whether to congratulate you or not. : S Is getting an honorable mention a good thing? I bet reading your fic on there wasn't... (But you said you read that site before)... Or was it? :)

I hope it didn't knock your confidence and the fact that you're still on here gives me the hope that you're still writing. I honestly hope so ;)

  13. Thanks ^^ I got through that particular chapter last night with a little help from a glass of iced tea spiked with rum. But I can guarantee I'll get stumped again. This fic is a toughie, lol.

Aw that's great you got it done! I always get worried about leaving a message on here coz im shy but I hope if you do get stuck again that it helps.

  14. the latter being a nerd blog with a weekly fanfiction review - they did mine eg here

http://www.toplessrobot.com/2008/04/fan_fi..._can_take_t.php and another story another time.

So he's done TWO of your fics? Wow. I must admit some of his stuff was funny, he has an s amusing sense of dry wit BUT I can't be cool with what he's doing. I'd be torn up if I saw my fic on there after two years of working on it. Saying that though is it not his right as a citizen to have freedom of speech. I'm not condoning the fact that he's completely shredding everyone's work to pieces, but, with it being fanfiction its not like we can claim it's OUR work really? And also he has a right to say if he does or does not like something... Just think that its gonna be hard for anyone to do anything about it. If the mods can cut his account on here then great but he can still access the site and if anything happens the whole place will be teaming with Trolls. :)

Unfortunate though it may be I think anyone who has that happen will have to rise above it and know that everyone here at AFF.net values their work and admires them for having the bravery to put it out there. **Glum smile**

  15. I know its not a done thing for one to push their own stories but it's not very often I really get to do so. (Or am brave enough to speak up.)

    http://hp.adult-fanfiction.org/story.php?no=600011882

My fic starts based around Hermione and Draco in their Seventh year where the Carrows teach class, Harry and Ron are on a horcrux hunt, (leaving Hermione behind for her own safety,) and Hermione and Draco are Head boy and girl. Part One is a lot lighter than part two and Draco is his usual immature, Malfoy self, tormenting Hermione. However as times get tough the two are thrown together a lot more and something rises between them, though not necessarily typical fluffy stuff. Part Two is a lot darker but I don't want to give away any surprises.

I also don't wana seem jumped up my own ass by suggesting my fic, it's just not very often I get on the forum and find people requesting Dramione.

Hope I haven't offended or annoyed anyone I'll go away and hide now lol

Hope whatever you read you enjoy. Welcome to the world of Dramione... Hereth begins the addiction :)
