I have a smart home setup in my bedroom. As it is the master bedroom, it also doubles as my lab. Currently, every light fixture in the room is smart, and there is an Invoke for Cortana, a Google Home mini for Google Assistant and an Echo Dot for Alexa. I use them all, and compare the responses.
In the apps for these Artificial Intelligence (AI) devices, there is an option to group all the smart fixtures based on what room they are in, and to name all the smart fixtures that connect to each other. With the exception of the Echo Dot, which I have named after a character in Shippuden, all the fixtures have standard names, like bedroom light. Since they are all connected and managed by a single device, I want them to have names with a common theme. To that end, I’m taking a page from Bill Gates-era Microsoft, which boasted a number of conference rooms with names that ended with -tion, such as “procrastination”, “motivation”, “synchronization”, etc. These are just examples, mind you – and boring ones at that.
I want to change the names of the four smart light fixtures in my bedroom to something that uses that theme. However, I’m short on imagination this evening. Can you guys suggest some fun/creative/inventive/radical/etc. words that end with -tion? Thanks.

LOL you mean besides giving provocative names to artificial intelligence devices?

Seduction. Starvation. (Hmm… maybe I should consider making breakfast….)

Now that you mention it, I haven't eaten either.

So… it's Friday night and I'm working on the implementation of my “smartened” bedroom. I now have smart bulbs installed in all lighting. For my tiny table lamp, I don't own a smart bulb small enough for it, so it's plugged into a smart switch I purchased on Black Friday. Now I just have to tell Alexa which light I want her to manage, and she does. This will certainly come in handy in the mornings… Alexa wakes me up with a song, but I have to get out of bed and turn on the lights myself, a task that is easier some days than others. *Sigh* maybe I won't oversleep so much now. We'll see.
I'm having fun with this though.

That actually sounds pretty cool

It is, so far. I am currently trying to figure out how to get Alexa to turn off all the lights in my bedroom at once, instead of doling out a command one light fixture at a time.
I also recommend the Google Home Mini. I got one free when I purchased my most recent smartphone, so I’ve been testing it out. The hardware retails for about the same as the Amazon hardware. I find the GHM to be equally useful; I made my choice to automate with Amazon a long time ago, so I’m sticking with that platform.

I have been having an issue with uploading images to the Internet for a few weeks now. I couldn’t figure out what was going on. It began with Tumblr – quite a while ago, to be fair. Then, little by little, it spread to other web sites I frequented. If I tried to upload a screen capture or update a profile image, I was thrown an error. Eventually, any site I tried to upload an image file to was throwing the error.
I finally figured out what the problem is. It’s the browser I was using.
For some reason, Microsoft Edge, in its infinite wisdom, began prohibiting me from uploading image files to any site on the web. I don’t know if the screw-up is linked to a browser update or what (OS Creators updates, perhaps? *shrugs*). But I know Edge is responsible, because after I updated Firefox to the Quantum version (Firefox 57) I gave it a test drive, using it to upload an image to the web. Guess what? It worked exactly as it should have. Without hesitation, I changed my default browser to the new Firefox.
I am a Windows Dork from the word go – always have been. But sometimes my loyalty is tested. There is absolutely no reason the goof-up for which Microsoft Edge is responsible should be happening. I use that browser with zero extensions installed. It’s my control browser: I use it to show me what web sites look like and behave in their native form, without browser add-ons restricting tracking/logging or metadata addition or applet execution (note: pop-up blocking is MS Edge default behavior.). I employ Microsoft Internet Explorer 11 in the same capacity. If I want add-ons and extensions to sanction my web activity, I install them in Chrome, Firefox and Opera.
I'm actually bummed that I have to use a different browser as my default. Microsoft’s hard work on MS Edge is not lost in translation. It’s a very practical browser, a powerful tool that I use with enthusiasm. But Microsoft needs to do better before I switch back to using Edge as my default.
Okay, I’m done ranting.

Yes, let’s discuss these new Windows builds… I appreciate the addition of new capabilities, but it seems to me that regression testing isn’t being executed with due diligence. New stuff seems to be breaking existing stuff in released builds. Microsoft needs to get right.

That sucks! I’m pretty loyal to Chrome when it comes to the browser wars. I’ve had a similar problem with it in the past. I don’t think it was images, but it was a mild, consistent problem like that. Not really breaking, but annoying enough that I had to switch to firefox. I feel for you! The frustration is real!
-
Porn surfing? That’s firefox+noscript, because, can you say malware? It’s also a nice combination just because it’s a lot less of the annoying popups/sidescrollers/garbage that’s floating around on a lot of the various websites.

I now have both a Google Home Mini and an Amazon Echo Dot set up in my bedroom. It’s as weird as it might seem. Next, I will find compatible hardware in order to engage Cortana in a likewise fashion. Watch me go!

It is cold, cloudy and blustery day today, and I don't feel like doing any of the shit I need to get done before Thanksgiving.

@Desiderius Price Sadly, Monday is a school/work day, so no delays possible. On the other hand, I’ll have peace and quiet to finish my clean-up.
-
@BronxWench, I hope your delayed Turkey-day was the best-ever for you.
-
@marley_station It actually was wonderful! I really love having my siblings around, and after the quick trip to buy a new turkey baster, everything went off exactly as planned. Well, except for my sister being later than I expected (I plan for lateness from her when she has my stepmom with her)…

We had an atari but I was sooo little, the only thing I remember is… a game with fire? and bugs? I dunno. Are they actually selling ataris again? Jesus, I hope they do that with super nintendo! I’d buy the hell out of uncharted waters!

OMG yes! Staples is a total time-machine right now. There's eighties-era video game swag covering the shelves in there!

After watching episode 9 of season 3 of SuperStore, I finally get what’s so complicated about health care from the perspective of people who typically go “under-coveraged”. This is a must-watch episode.

This web site is the closest I will ever actually get to having a Twitter account.

Twitter’s not so terrible. Some good twitfic on there. Or stuff like this –
I remember Livejournal boning itself. Every few months there’d be some change and then hysterical drama over the news comm or wherever with people moving to journalfen or dreamdwidth or some other site to talk about how bad LJ was for something they did, like the plus accounts or whatever. They banned gobbledegook from being an interest at one point and that led to even more rage. Then it was bought out by a Russian company and still remains pretty popular in that neck of the woods I think. I’m sort of nostalgic to go look at my old LJ accounts now…
Still, we can all laugh about Rupert Murdoch buying Myspace and losing a shitload of money. Right?

I always laugh at Rupert Murdoch losing a shitload of money, but then again, I think that’s a mark in my favor.
LJ was where I debuted Morwen Navarre, my erotica-writing alter ego. But LJ getting bought by a Russian company was about the last straw for me, given the nature of what I write. The having to pay for everything was bad enough, but I just ignored that. The occasion when my LJ account was inexplicably changed to a Japanese language account was a bit awkward, since I couldn’t read anything to figure out how to change it back, and the support staff was less than supportive. I miss the old LJ, actually, and if they ever revert to being a useful site, I might consider making an account again. But not while it’s owned by people who kill people for doing what I write about. I have to have some scruples.
-
I was just about to point out what BW did, as far as LJ being bought by a Russian company. Then again, it wasn’t like my fandom had a devout following on there, anyway LOL
I heard that Twitter was considering a 250-character limit. I have no idea if this is coming from a troll source but I’ve seen it mentioned a few times. Still, 250 characters isn’t enough for us ramblers but much better than 140 or whatever the limit is now.

Let’s not use that word on AFF! I know it’s Halloween season, but that’s very, very scary!

Watching a crazy show about puberty on Netflix called “Big Mouth”. I can’t even...

I watched that damn Funny Games USA movie on Netflix and it just pissed me off! Now I'm watching Housebound on Netflix as a sort of "palate cleanse".

I love October! Netflix/Hulu/Amazon Prime have the best scary movies in October. I have been watching them all day!

I have to say, one of the best horror films I have ever seen – and one of the few that REALLY nails horror/comedy right upon its ugly head – is Housebound. It’s a Kiwi film about this young lass on house arrest, and it’s just absolutely hilarious.
-
@DictionaryWrites sold! Adding it to my list! Thanks for the rec!

One i haven't seen! Now i definitely have to watch housebound

Fanfiction.net seems to have become the rage again. I am getting more favorites for my old fics in recent weeks than I have in years!
