    Raymy got a reaction from Kurahieiritr in Sexist stories (not sexism IN stories) against females
    I think that the AFF site probably has more than 50% females, maybe even up to 90%? (one of the admins could site a better figure) The irony is that we all seem to enjoy each other, mostly, but this phenomenon of sexist stories is still accurate. You'd think a mainly female gathering would demonstrate the "bitchy, antagonistic" side of us, but our interactions don't manifest that way. Just the fanfic. So I wonder if the characterizations from one story perpetuate the way others are written. I know that when I like the way a male character is portrayed in a story I've read, it influences the way I write him in my own story. I think we have to make a conscious effort to give the females a more realistic personality, drawn from our real life family, friends and coworkers while in keeping with canon, if possible. Hopefully, we can influence future stories with well-written females, even if they're side characters because we like to write Yaoi.

    Raymy got a reaction from Kurahieiritr in Compulsion to Review everything? Or is it just me?
    I have a crazy need to review everything I read, irregardless* of wasting my own time. It's a self-imposed rule. I made the decision to support fellow authors no matter what the cost, because I believe in practicing the behaviour you wish others would use on you. Meaning, if I want reviews, I must give them. It's not perfect Karma, but sometimes you need to put out 10 times (maybe 100) more effort to receive a positive response in return. It's the world we live in.
    Usually, authors complain about not getting reviews, but my complaint is that I can't keep up with the reviews I expect to give. I have a virtual sticky on my desktop with a list of the stories I still need to review. I'm also quite verbose in my comments which makes leaving a review (sometimes for every chapter) a bit challenging. I want to be original, insightful, witty, and sincere. I sometimes offer con crit, but mostly just analyze the content, the affect it had on me, and where my thoughts took me. I imagine its nice for the writer to know what their writing does to a reader, and not just if their writing is coherent or grammatically correct.
    It's seems silly to agonize over a review, but such is my nature. I agonize over everything I write. Proofreading is a major undertaking, involving the dictionary and multiple rereads. So, you see, my reviews take up a lot of time and effort, and sometimes I lose my impetus to put out. Ergo, the list.
    Am I the only one with this particular form of OCD? Somebody tell me that I have kindred spirits out there, and I'm not a lonely, weird, old cat lady.

    kurahieiritr came about because I am an on again and off again internet user. My hardcore recluse moods are to blame I suppose. I can go two or three years off line, so I have lost several screen names because I was not paying some internet carrier for service.
    When I whipped up this screen name, I was into watching Yu Yu Hakusho. Kura as in Kurama the demonic fox, Hiei being the fire demon, and I am a writer of course. I can have a very demonic temper cause I am Irish/Viking/Amerindian with genuine red hair that truly does reflect my inner passion. So subtle spinning of the demonic tone from Yu Yu Hakusho seemed appropriate.
    In the main archives here and at FFnet, I added JIO which are my full name initials for Josie I. Oden. Please do not make Josie & Pussycats cartoon cracks about my first name. I've been hearing the oh so very tired list of wise cracks since the 1970's. I have used this screen name, or azdesertlupine for several years and can't recall the majority of names I have abandoned since the early 90's. azdesertlupine is Arizona Desert Lupine, an endangered subspecies of the equally endangered Kincaid Lupine class of wild flowers found in the Saguaro National Monument West and the Ironwood National Monuments around Tucson Arizona. It was the first 3d beaded floral sculpture I ever designed.

    This is the first post of this thread. Yeah, so the reason nobody posts an "explain your avatar" thread is because avatar's change and then the post makes no sense. Plus the majority of the older posts are now "guest" with no avatar at all which makes even less sense. But I say, "Who cares?" Just put up a new post when it changes, which many have done.
    So mine was going to be the same as my FF.net account. It's my black cat, but the file was a smidge too large and I couldn't crop enough to get it smaller. I didn't want to fuss anymore and I happened to be writing a Renji/Byakuya story in the Bleach fandom which described both men with their hair down. This pic was just too sexy to resist, what with the tats. I was lucky enough to get permission from the artist on deviantart.com to use her "Renji". I have given her credit in my signature.

    Okay, yeah. I read the first and second books. I see the fourth posted but I won't read it until I read the third. Where is the third? I haven't reviewed yet, because I've been just barrelling through. So, sorry about lack of feedback. I'll get there eventually when I reread from the beginning. It's sort of like the way you describe their intimacy. I can't take my time on the first round, too stimulated. Heh, heh. General impression, though, is that I like it. Otherwise, I wouldn't be reading it steady and daydreaming about the pair.

    Since I have a moment of down time, I'll share this.
    My man and I are going through training to drive semi trucks. Well, one thing truckers are given is a "handle" or a nickname other truckers use to identify them on the CB. One of our group is Smokin' Joe. My man, on the other hand.... Four of us were going over the pre-trip inspection and one thing we're supposed to do is check that nothing is damaged. So my man's listing off things that need to be checked for on the steering shaft, but he forgot to mention "bent"...so we reminded him. He went off on a tangent, one of the other guys and I looked askance at each other and tried (and failed) to bite back laughter because his phrasing was so easily misunderstood.... Now he's Bent Shaft among the four of us, and you should hear the razzing he gets.
    Yup. Truckers are pervs.

    Sorry to sidetrack this thread. Buuuuut ... I'm still gonna.
    Hey, thanks for the clarification. Although, I watched the series before I read this post, so I figured out my error pretty quick. Since I'm so into Bleach (and know you've seen it), I made a parallel between KT and Grimmjow's attitudes. But Takumi just takes the cake! I totally agree with "cute little prude". There was this one subbed line that described him as "clueless" and that's him in a nutshell. I love that about him.

    Oh my Gods! I laughed so hard. I don't know "wot" was intended for the words "tak" or "kts" but I loved the word, "wot". I think I'm going to be seeing that spelling in my head every time I say the word from now on. It makes sense to me if I hear a British accent when I read it.

    Laughing so hard as I catch up on this thread right now. I took all of several years worth of reviews from the two sites I posted on, the good, bad, and ugly. Now I am completely revamping a whole series at the moment and moving them to this site in the Initial D archive section.
    Looks like I must warn everyone that I helped a dear friend who is a reading fanatic to get onto this site. She doesn't write, but she will review anything that catches her eyes. Every single chapter . . . Not even kidding here. She and I met when I was an active Urbis contributing writer who royally sucked at the time.
    For 10 years, any site I start posting on, she starts combing through looking for gems to entertain herself. She's partially paralyzed and something of a shut in so she does have plenty of time. The reason she has stuck with me for so many years is she likes my way of turning phrases. She has helped me get even better at finding new ways with words.
    Please be nice to OldOwl if she does review your work. She's one incredible asset if you look at her review with an eye for "maybe I can fix that little problem" mindset. She tells me every single typo and every grammar problem, and I absolutely love her for it. She's helped me improve my writing greatly over 10 years. Sometimes she goes on character kicks, and sometimes she's a grammar Nazi, but OldOwl is one of the greatest assets any writer could ever befriend.
    She broke me of the horrific bad habit of not being well versed in which character was talking to the other. Now I have that trait down pat. She is the reason I learned to use idioms, catch phrases, and other tricks like stuttering and other personality keying factors to make the character personalities clear through the way they spoke to each other. I can assure everyone she is worth listening to when she does tackle a project. After all, I'm pig headed and she tackled me and won me over. ROFL.
    Frankly, this is the first time she has reviewed any of my work without growling that she should have known which character was talking without the proverbial Character 1 said and Character 2 replied tags.

    Wiping tears from my eyes as I read all of these great typo terror moments. My contribution came from several reviews I have collected over the years.
    #1 { in my opinion, detrimental to the writing style and injures the flow of the story. } When I read this, I wondered how typed words could get physically injured.
    #2{ But, I have just joined so I can not really say anything at all good job! }
    For the first week I pondered whether they were saying my writing style sucked, or that they were so new to reviewing stories they were not doing a good job. Considering how many coherent good jobs I received, I decided they were probably saying the same.
    #3{I still get the same thought wot happened when tak finished work and wot is kts idea of a first date.}
    It took me 5 minutes to stop seeing light bulbs in my head over the "wot" shorthand. Not certain as to why that happens. However wot looks to me as if it should be spell checked into the genuine word "watt" for some reason.
    #4 {when do u plan to update this chapi check it just about everyday but no luck. and thank u for putting in the missing parts so one can only gather what the next story will be like compelete }
    The story this child (?) or ditzy bad joke variety Blond (?) was reviewing was already marked completed in big bold letters. I ended the number one novel's final page with the obligatory Author's Note stating that the "Next story is Alternate Tracks, Sequel to A Rivalry Revealed."
    Is it only me, or do people not comprehend straight forward English in this day and age? Something has gone seriously wrong within the education system in place for American children I fear.
    And the grand Finale that had me twitching when I saw it two years ago: #5 {and i see

    it's a YAOI

    and YESH! i love YAOI!

    i wonder who'll be the pair

    would be be my fave

    ahhaha

    i wonder why people don't review in this}
    I have yet to decide if the reviewer was high on crack, another illegal substance, or suffering from acute insomnia exacerbated by caffeine overdose and too much sugar when they sent their review.

    Quite a lively debate going on here. Some of it on topic and some off topic. I believe that Adultfanfiction net is about the freedom of expression first and foremost. I think I will use an illustration or two to tackle this specific topic. Three things stand out about this forum. Everyone loves to voice their own likes and dislikes. Some here seem to wish to see their dislikes removed.
    I took psychology courses back in the age of dinosaurs. (for those in the 20's age range to understand this is coming for your mom's peer age) Back in the era of T-Rex, learning a lot about history's significance on modern cultures etc was mandatory. Here's the rub, . . . Let's look at the end of World War One; Germany. The rise of Political Correct politeness was being government enforced through legislation. PC Nazi ethics have been directly linked to the creation of Concentration Camps and Jewish genocide during World War Two. That is a well documented historical fact, not a fictitious wishful thinking statement. When we embrace Political Correctness, we are censoring freedom of speech. To be PC, you have to censor yourself. The more afraid you are to speak your truth, the easier it is for the government to control you and your friends in the end. IT is the beginning of a shift toward victimization prone thin skinned individuals who refuse to try and improve their lives because P.C. has historically made others into villains instead of teaching personal self responsibility.
    Go to China and check out their lifestyle. P.C. is a law nobody dares argue. In fact for those too young to recall China's Tienanmen Square, crack your history books and learn how abusive Government becomes once it silences free speech. Learn the truth about Political Correctness and how it removes responsibility from the individual who often is already too lazy to stand up and raise their own children and worse. Free speech, even that which is rude, or infantile, gives human beings their number one emotional venting system. Remove the venting system, and the human being begins an unstoppable slow simmering emotional boiling of resentments. It has turned into genocidal tendencies at it's worst breaching points that humanity can never deny. Shut down the venting system, and the steam backs up.
    Ever heard of a steam engine? That is how emotions eventually work in a sense. Forcing steam to build to set levels of pressure to make a train that weighs several tons to move forward at very fast speeds is the same as forcing people to keep their resentments and fancies to themselves. Just like the steam engine will self destruct if the steam is not vented correctly, so will the individual's emotions blow up after P.C. fears can no longer restrain the pressure of resentments.
    This site has many diverse written formats for a reason. It is a venting system that can prevent the pressure build up from turning into destructive reality. Whether Cathartic or to simply needle those with holier than thou agendas, it has a place that should be respected by all. Removing topics that are uncomfortable for a set group is about breaking down the ability to vent emotions positive or negative that need a place to go. Shut off any taboo form writing and those who read and write them have less pressure release options to slow the explosion rate is my very well educated theory.
    Don't like the content? How about trying the do not read it rule? Allow those who need to vent such ideals room to contain their emotions through a non violent format. Those who act on such pressurized emotions are a different beast entirely. They require damage control measures because those are perpetrating harmful or even exceedingly violent crimes. If this site can help prevent even one such violent explosion by giving a person a place to write it out, or read it, kudos and congrats. It worked to relieve the building emotional pressure in an individual somewhere. Otherwise that individual backed into a pressurized emotional corner would have committed an atrocity.

    I totally get that. Your written creation is like a "mini-me" and I get tickled at reading my own stuff when I feel I've done it just right. Then, I really want to share it but, damn, that means someone other than me is going to read it! What if they don't feel the same as I do? It's a shitty dilemma. To share or not to share, not just the story, but the feelings. I want others to know my joy and feel their own, but there's no frickin' guarantee so you just have to plug your nose and jump. Scary and thrilling, sometimes disappointing, maybe even crushing. Meh, I just move on to the next chapter, and start all over again.

    I'm glad I found this thread. I wrote a bit of a rant on my bio in the archive section regarding this very thing shortly after I made an account. I've also recently emailed with a new author to AFF about it after she contacted me regarding a review I left (that she liked).
    I found that my viewpoint has morphed over the short time I've spent on AFF. I started out very indignant about the "lack of reviews" and decided to set an example by reviewing everything I read. I even soapboxed in a review about other non-reviewers. I didn't flame anyone, though, because if I didn't like the story within about 9 paragraphs, I'd leave without a review.
    Then I decided to write, for the first time. I figured that I should experience the other side for my reviews to be of any real value. I discovered the need and joy of getting reviewed. I lucked out because the fact that I had made an effort to review others, some returned the favour. This only fuelled my resolve to continue to review the stories I like. I had a momentary lapse of self-pity that some of the authors that I reviewed religiously, and was sometimes the only reviewer, had not honoured me with their opinion. However, I'm not upset anymore that others do not. Not everyone is in my headspace, feeling a responsiblity to support my fellow amateur writers.
    I'm here to express my creativity, a facet of my being that has been neglected for decades, and I'm happy not to be an expert or genius, but maybe I can give someone else a smile, someone whose not too picky that I'm not very professional. If I get one review, especially from someone whose writing I respect and enjoy, it's worth it. A single review means that you shared with someone, not much different than talking with friend or coworker and getting a response for your effort. That is why I won't be discouraged and will continue to write and review as much as I'm compelled to.
    While I really don't get why its hard to leave a review, I've accepted that situation as it is. Ranting doesn't change it. I never have a recaptcha problem. I always copy before I attempt and have only had it fail a couple of times, though my review didn't disappear. I even think that some of nonsense words are funny and worth exploring what their meaning could be. Has there been a topic on that?

    Poll: is there an point where you draw the lion as an writer?
    Well, I'm not very good at drawing, so I doubt I'd ever reach an point where I would draw an lion. Is that the point where you just want an carnivore to rip your writing to shreds because it totally sucks? Okay, maybe I'd draw it then. But I warn you, it would be an really bad drawing!
    Now, in regards to the topic being discussed: Drawing a line, saying, "This content shall not pass!"
    Writing. No. If it suits my purposes, I'll write anything. I don't care if people want to equate my writing with who I am. They'll never truly know me. So, pah! Whatever.
    Reading. I've pushed myself to read stuff that was a major squick but I took the time to evaluate why I felt that way and still came up with a review that, I felt, was not flamey. I feel I learned from the experience and realize that my personal boundaries need challenging. I won't restrict myself on the grounds that I may want to write controversial stuff in the future, if not currently, and learning about another's view is a stepping stone to expand my existence. Did that make sense? Eck. I think I got lost along the way.
    Shoulds and shouldn'ts. Debates are also eye-opening for some, just like exposure to non-conforming fiction. Others, however, just want to dictate their beliefs without consideration. A common saying I use, "shoulda, coulda, woulda", means that if I should have, and I could have, then I would have. But I say it with a shrug, because it doesn't mean that much to me to conform. Others may have a different take on the saying.
    I think my brain is fried cuz I can't follow my own thoughts. I just read through this thread from the beginning and I think I have a legitimate excuse for being off kilter. Plus I drank too much Dr. Pepper.

    I agree, though I often have a hard time reading the extremely popular pairings, simply because I like to read material that is well written and (hopefully!) well edited, and it seems to me that the more popular a pairing is, the lower the percentage of well-created stories.
    While I may be (am) mostly a yaoi fan, I do read the occasional het...and once or twice I've found yuri I enjoyed, though I don't go looking for it. *shrug* I'm just not as into other girls as I'm into guys. Not that I go for body alone, but in anime and manga, there IS a trend of overly feminine girls. Even Rukia is more girly than I am, and that...doesn't interest me. I am completely uninterested in fluttery, pretty facades and/or giggly morons, no matter if their hearts are in the right places. Nel appeals to me more than Rukia or Orihime. So does Tia, for that matter. Yoruichi's so much like a cat even in her human form that I can't find it in me to dislike her, though I like Urahara more. (And yes, I believe there are yaoi references in Bleach, whether or not they were meant. Why else is Urahara forever stabbing Ichigo with his sword cane/Zanpakuto? )

    Of course the author can do whatever she wants with a character, but if it's doesn't seem appropriate, then it ruins the experience. Mmmn. With Grimm, I was thinking that because he's got such a macho exterior, that perhaps he's hiding a needy, and sometimes insecure facet. In the first instance, his whimper reflects his needing to fulfill his lust. Later, it's given in submission to his Alpha, and at the end, it's involuntary after his stupendous orgasm. It's one of those embarrassing, uncontrollable quirks a person has but tries to hide unless something (like an aphrodisiac hiding in the drug or fear from someone stronger) reveals it accidentally. I'm sure you can think of something you'd not want the public to see, but might sneak out if you're not vigilant. Mine is rocking. With no rocking chair! I do it when I'm alone (doin' right now!), but sometimes I'm at work, having my break alone and rocking while listening to music or something. Then, someone walks in and I instantly stop. I don't think anyone knows. Heh, heh.
    Yeah, he's not been a fully developed character in canon, because he's sleeps a lot and behaves so apathetically. However, I believe that once I explain the reason for his apparent lethargy, and remove it, I'll have a blank canvas to make him whatever I think he should be, given the backstory I'm crafting. Since the drug he was given is directly related to lifting the "curse of somnolency", you've witnessed what I think is underneath. We'll see if I'm consistent in future chapters. If not, poke me.
    *big grin* I just love how you question everything. Got me backed into a corner. No wait, I come out swinging, and ... yes! A right hook to the jaw. Okay, so Grimm was not under the influence of the drug when mouthing off to Tosen, but it wouldn't have mattered because when I (later) describe what the drug actually did, you'll see that who he defers to is important. His desire to overpower Starrk is not crushed by his acquiescence; he's just put in his place for now, but he still desires to be Top Dog. The drug is influencing him now, though, and well, I can't give away future details, but it's part of the "solid reason". Yes, I believe Grimmjow is thoughtful enough to consider leadership qualities. Have you seen what his options were so far? Delusional Aizen and/or his minions, ancient Baraggan, sleepy Starrk, and an androphobic Harribel. The new and improved Starrk is far and away the best choice for a leader.
    LOL! I think of Szayel as very flexible. Even though it hurts at first, he's very into the sensations and is able to turn it into pleasure. I just watched a guy (ahem -- research) that I thought embodied Szayel. Slender with long blond hair (I subbed in pink), big eyes and pouty lips. He had a feminine quality about him but was not a shemale and had a voracious appetite for c0ck, both orally and anally. I mean, no theatrics in pretending to like it, he enjoyed himself and you could tell by his stiff reaction, moaning and the colour in his cheeks. He was with two men, double stuffed, and was quite happy about it. And talented! Deep throat with no gagging. Mmmmn. Great inspiration derived from reality. Oooops! Did I share too much? Heh, heh.
    I can see that you're trying to point out a problem with the (technical?) sexual aspects of this encounter. It is my first (literary) threesome, so I wouldn't claim to be proficient, however, I'd like more specific critique. Email me with your thoughts, k? I'm not certain how to improve based on this response.
    TicLic, I just want to thank you for your thoughtful reviews, you always give me reasons to think and defend my position; that's very helpful in fleshing out my story. Also, thanks for defending this chapter's inclusion of music, demonstrating not only your courage in speaking your mind, but your compassion in aiding a friend. Mucho appreciation.

    Okay Cuzosu, since this is my rant, I'm going to point out a few things using your post as an example. Please don't take this personally. It isn't. I don't know you at all. I just know what I read here.
    1) The parenthetical aside: Had I used this "style" trick in any of my writing, my instructors would have torn me to shreds. I watched them do it to others. You are the author. Yours is the voice. There is no need (absolutely none) to cheat proper punctuation by using parentheses to address your readers separately. http://www.grammarbook.com/punctuation/parens.asp
    2) Improper use of the ellipses ... meaning those three little dots which are used as a pause or to indicate that words have been left out of a quote. They do not follow a period. The punctuation follows them.http://www.grammarbook.com/punctuation/ellipses.asp
    Also, if a pause in the reader is what you are after -- an em-dash is more acceptable. http://www.grammarbook.com/punctuation/dashes.asp
    3) The non-sentence: The more rare and professional level punctuation.
    4) The splice, whether a comma or semi-colon: hey, this isn't perfect; here's a way you could improve it. This is two sentences. And you left out the quotation marks to signify this was something spoken, or written. "Hey, this isn't perfect. Here's a way you could improve it."
    5) May I point out that all of this is off-topic. The Direct Address Comma, poor thing, is dead.
