Then try different variation of the display name. Try it without the underscores for example, or if you have spaces, use underscores instead, or skip spaces and underscores completely. I think that you can’t use spaces in the display name.
And we’ve told you repeatedly that you can create a topic with a poll in the forum. You CANNOT post a poll in the Archive. And I don’t know what story contest you are talking about. To the best of my knowledge, we have never had a story contest.

If the application form keeps telling you that the display name “the_story_teller97” is wrong, then there’s is obviously an element in that username that doesn't work. So, try to enter it in a different format, such as for example “theStoryTeller97” or “TheStoryTeller97” or some combination that does not contain underscores. I think that underscores were not allowed after one of the updates to the forum.
And BronxWench has already told you that there will be no adding of any kind of a rewards system, and therefore there is no need for any kind of a poll to see what other users think.
And I am not finding anything about “first ever story contest”. If there is such a post, it is not something that any of the staff has posted. We are not having any kind of a story contest, if there is such a post anywhere, it is something that another user has posted.

Yes, try using the name TheStoryTeller97 and see if that works. I think that the underscores were eliminated from usernames after the update.
Nope, not interested. BronxWench has answered your posts concerning that rewards offer. She said no. That’s it. I’m only the forum moderator, I have NO say over anything concerning the Archives.
As for the story contest, if you want to make a post about a story contest and supervise some kind of a contest, then that’s completely your choice. But then it would be completely your thing, and we would not have anything to do with it, other than making sure that the post and the stories follow the rules of the Archives and the Forums.

Yes, our Forum Administrator isn’t in the States, so we always ask new users to wait at the very least 24 hours for him to approve new forum profiles. This approval of course depends completely on whether you have filled all of the information in correctly.

Alright. I want you to answer my questions in the correct order.
Did you click the “Sign up” button on the top right hand side of the forum? Have you filled in all of the information requested correctly, with a link to your Archive profile? If the answer to both of these questions is Yes, then your profile request has been sent and you will need to wait for our Forum Administrator to verify that all of the information you provided is correct and then approve your forum profile. Only then will the account be visible and accessible. You need to give at least 24 hours for this process to happen.

As I said in our many emails back and forth (the reply feature is actually easier than creating a new email each time, you know), we do not have and will not have any sort of rewards system, points, or whatever you want to call them for any of our stories, original or fan fiction. That is not how AFF works. We have absolutely no interest in implementing what you propose. What is upsetting, to be honest, is to have you ask me the same thing, over and over. As my offspring could attest, it’s not a useful tactic.
For many of us who are long time members, we recall the old rating system, which was abused with disturbing regularity. In the overwhelming majority of cases, ratings did not reflect the quality of a story. They were used to indicate popularity based on anything but merit, or to punish an author for content the reader didn’t like. If a story praised a character they thought should be disliked, or contained an unfavorable pairing, the story was rated down. Others had stories rated highly despite a complete ignorance of grammar and spelling because, as an example, the author bashed Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter fandom. Why anyone would read a story clearly marked with a pairing they did not like just for the sake of rating the story down is unfathomable. Ratings were a dismal failure, and the childish abuse led to us discarding them in our code revisions.
Where original fiction is concerned, which is any work not based on someone else’s copyrighted materials, if you really want to be rewarded, get published. Submit it to a legitimate publisher, small independent publisher, magazine or blog, or self publish the work on Amazon. But again, we will not allow anyone to use AFF to earn money, from commissions, via Patreon solicitations (or any other self-funding site), or by advertising any product for sale other than through our banner ad program.
As far as leaving a review on a story, there’s a link at the bottom of every chapter of every story on AFF right on the left hand side, that reads “Review [Name of Story].” You click that, and you are taken to a text box where you can type in your review. At the bottom is a little gray button link that reads “Post Review” which when clicked will do exactly that. It is up to the author of the story to reply to the review, however, so if someone who hasn’t been on the site since 2012 doesn’t answer your review or hit you up on Discord, writing to us won’t help. We don’t give out email addresses for our members.
We have a chatbox; you can see the link at the top of the home page for the forum. It’s available for registered users of the forum.
Our site is also mobile-compatible, something we implemented well before you joined. There is no need from our point of view for an app since a great many users access the site from mobile devices with no problems.

Moved to a more appropriate forum since this is not a Category Request.
As for why we only have a certain collection of stories… we only have the stories that our users post to our Archive. Perhaps our users haven’t seen or written fanfic about the new series.

Don’t worry about the story content rule here, Ghost-of-a-Chance, because as BronxWench explained this forum is meant to be a place where authors can get help with things that are difficult or keeping them stuck.
As for the gaijin thing, I am only basing my answer on my experience in Japan. I was told by my Japanese friends that it’s considered terribly rude and no person would use it around white people without meaning offence.
And I think your safest bet when it comes to the honorifics is to use -san, because the tone of voice used when saying a name like “Smith-san” can imply the derogatory meaning. Just imagine the tone of voice when your relative calls people those charming names, and go from there.
Also, in Japan if you insist on calling someone by their family name + san it strongly implies that you do not want to become better acquainted with them, or allow them into your inner circle of friends, so to speak. As soon as you start using given name + san it implies that you now consider that person closer to you as a peer and someone you would call a friend.
I hope this helps, even though I’m only basing this on my personal experience from Japan. I’m no expert, but I have studied the language so I do know a bit.
  11. Confused
WillowDarkling got a reaction from Ghost-of-a-Chance in LANGUAGE & CULTURE QUESTION regarding a situationally appropriate Japanese suffix
Gaijin is considered quite rude in most social situations regarding non-Japanese (especially white) people today, and especially if it’s said in a rude or taunting tone.
The polite way of saying “foreigner” is Gaikokujin.
Also for the honorifics, -kun and -chan are used when you are familiar with someone, so anyone trying to keep a “social distance” of any kind, would just use familyname-san, I think. Of course the tone of voice can always be used to convey condescension etc.
-kun and -chan are also used for boys younger than you and girls, respectively, so adding the suffix -kun to the name of someone your own age, either means you are quite close, or implies that you view that person as someone below you in age and “status”, but I don’t think Japanese teens would actually use it that way.
After conferring with our head archive mod, the story content is allowed in this instance as per the post below mine. The extra content is needed for context.

WillowDarkling reacted to BronxWench in LANGUAGE & CULTURE QUESTION regarding a situationally appropriate Japanese suffix
Actually, in this instance, because the OP is looking for language guidance and not looking to publish a story on the forum, in whole or in part, I think the extra content was needed to get the correct guidance, especially in the murky world of Japanese honorifics (which still elude me after all these years of you trying to teach me).
Now, the idiot who keeps trying to publish stories in the Adopt a Story forum definitely needs to be smacked with a very large thesaurus. Repeatedly.

While I personally don’t have a problem with you posting ideas here. The Moderators will… here is the rule posted at in the Mandatory Reading at the top of this forum:
It is NOT permitted to post random, unrelated ideas, or hijack a thread to come up with new ideas, no matter whether they are related to the original post or not. If the writer who takes up the challenge asks for input, keep it to the point, and do not derail the discussion, and allow the author time to respond.

I again sit in amazement at anon managing to google fu up the originals and I hope it doesn’t take too much time for BW to deal with it.

The first link is to asstr.org which isn’t this site. I’m not sure the best email contact to raise with them – they’ve got copyright@asstr.org and story-admin@asstr.org but who knows if those mailboxes are still monitored? admin@Asstr.org may also be worth a shot.
This site is http://www2.adult-fanfiction.org so if you got a link to it on the adult-fanfiction.org domain the mods can look at it.

A long, long time ago, in what feels like another lifetime, I wrote a tribute piece for a dear friend who passed away.  The piece was for publication in the flyer for his memorial race.  Yesterday, his son, now my neighbor, stood in my yard, with tears in his eyes, thanking me for writing the piece, capturing what that part of his dad’s life was all about.  I didn’t sign the piece.  He just knew it was me.  He says he goes through his dad’s scrapbook every year, takes out that flyer, and smiles.
So for those of us who write, alone in the dark, with no idea who is reading, keep writing.  If your words only touch one person, you have succeeded!  Keep writing!

To be very honest, when an author downs their work all over the Internet, we tend to think that should be respected, and we don’t like links even to things like the Wayback Machine. Some authors have had to take down all their fan fiction when publishing original fiction, due to the requirements of their publisher. Sometimes, they’ve taken down their work for privacy concerns. So, we would rather be cautious, and not post those links.
If the author posted the work on another fiction archive, we do allow those links in the search threads, or on the Great Wall Of… thread. We don’t allow links to those sites in the archive itself, however.
