  1. It's gotta be HP. That's the only archive in which SoftObsidian74 has posted.
  2. You've gone about it the right way. Your application is quite detailed. That pleases me. I'm sure you'll do a great job. I've sent you a link to a request you may be interested in.
  3. Crossover pairings are tricky. There's no guarantee that the reader will be familiar with both worlds. Your best bet would be to pick two shows with a large intersection in the audience. Sometimes, there are weird instances where the shows have little in common in terms of genre/intended audience, but there's a huge cross-section of fans in the fanfiction world because of a common fetish/creator/actor. If we go for the common spin-off crossover, I'd have to say that I'd really like to see Anyanka (Buffy)/Illyria (Angel). Both are powerful and ancient female demons hailing from patriarchal societies. It would be extremely interesting to see the interaction between them. The main hurdle would be the fact that the two are never in existence at the same time. Illyria is lain dormant before Anya's born, and Anya dies before Illyria is resurrected. I'd like to see an Angel/Joyce fic too. I think that they actually have quite a few things in common and would be great together provided that they start off on the right foot. This has been done before, but it's extremely rare. I'd like to read more Harry/Tom fics - not Harry/Voldemort, but Harry/Tom. There's a significant difference. Pre-Voldemort Tom may actually have a chance to develop a healthy relationship with Harry. Hmm... can't really think of any other rare pairings that I'd like to see right now. If I come up with any, I'll let you know. ETA: I've thought of another one! Poison Ivy/plant. Any plant, whether it be petals or vines. I think I've only read one fic where she uses her plants to sexually gratify Robin and destroy him in the process. Otherwise, she never uses plants to sexually satisfy herself or as a sexual weapon on her enemies. And that just doesn't make sense to me. YuriChampion brought up another pairing that I like. There are very few Reba/BJ fics out there. There's enough viable evidence to support the theory that Barbara Jean has a crush on Reba.
  4. It's mYstery! With a Y, not an I! Please refer to my signature below for an explanation of my outburst. That is all.
  5. Please provide the following additional information: - Are you looking to work as an official beta on AFF? - Do you have any previous experience as a beta? If so, provide links to that work. The resume formats were already posted. Please answer ALL of the questions listed on the application. There are two open requests for Naruto fics that may interest you. Once you answer the remaining questions, I'll provide the links.
  6. This is insufficient. Please provide more information on the story you want beta'd. Is it the one you already have up? Or is it a different one that you're still working on? At the very least, provide pairings and warning codes.
  7. Funny you should mention that. I have a nasty case of PCOS, so I do know what the whole irregular period, extra cysts, hormonal imbalance deal is like. They won't let me have any operations for it because I'm "too young". *shrug* I deal with it the best I can. For the past week, I've been sick. Sore throat, voice wavering worse than a 14-year-old boy, trouble swallowing (soup is my friend!), stuffed nose, hacking cough, earache, migraines... everything but a temperature. I'm still waiting for the results to see if I have strep. Hopefully not. I have finals going on. I can't afford to be contagious. Guess we'll just have to ride it out together.
  8. If you log in and don't log out at the end of your session, then you should be logged in the next time you visit provided that you didn't dump the cookies somehow. It's probably best to add in that "2" if you wish to use the "Remember me" option. However, the "Remember me" option will not log you in automatically the next time you visit the forums. It'll remember your user-name.
  9. Moved! I'm primarily female, but my personality and thought processes tend to be gender-neutral. That, and I have a hormonal disorder. And I've taken on male roles in plays before (it's fun!).
  10. I've fixed the poll. Unfortunately, doing so misplaced the votes. The one person who had voted before shall have to vote again. Kanashii, I'm sending you a brief guide on creating polls. I have a pretty good idea of what went wrong.
  11. So how exactly would one apply for a forum moderator position around here? There has to be a way for older regular forum members to send in an application if they want to join the forum moderating team. Just asking because I'm sure that inquiring minds would like to know.
  12. Each resume is its own topic. The main thread is locked because it is only supposed to be for guidelines. So you've posted correctly. I'm going to start reading your stories. I'm familiar with Buffy, at least. I don't suppose I need to know the canon to check your spelling and grammar skills (you state that your grammar is strong). When I say objectionable content, I mean the things put in warning labels. For example, would you be bothered by scat or incest? Different people have different tolerance areas and levels. I ask for this type of information because this is an adult site and anything is inevitable. If nothing bothers you, that's a huge asset. ----- I've just finished reading your work. I've sent some comments privately. It would've been nice to read some of your reviews because the stories are all at the beginning right now. At this point, this is neither an acceptance nor a rejection. I think you have excellent reasons for wanting to become a beta, and I like your application.
  13. Post a regular resume and state that you do not wish to become a regular beta but are in the middle of working on a story. The whole point is that I need to know your qualifications. That way, if you take on work here in the future, I'll have your credentials on hand. So will the person for whom you're doing the beta work and anyone else who may wish to contact you for beta work. If you don't want me to contact you for hooking up authors, you simply need to say so. As a beta, you don't need to fall into a specific category. The categories were placed there because those are the general categories that came to mind and being able to sort the betas into groups for future reference would make my job easier.
  14. My high school had a Japanese exchange program. We could take either French or Japanese. I chose French. I still went to all of the cultural events. The thing I like about the Japanese language is that the enunciation is so clear. Don't have a clue about the vocabulary, but I've heard that the grammar can be complex. I haven't been everywhere! I've been to a lot of places, but I can't even remember half of them. My parents were jet-setters until I finally started kindergarten. Well, it explains why I can handle 30-hour flights with ease. Where's the "shrug" emoticon?
  15. ^Aye! Magic markers need to be restored no matter what because they're one of the most popular items. If you take out the cum-swapping joke, the snowballs are pointless and can be safely removed from the item list.
  16. Lessee... I used to live in NYC. Then I lived in both Kolkata and Dhaka for three years. I live in Toronto now. I've been to London, Cox's Bazaar, Singapore, Malaysia, Agra, Mumbai, New Delhi, Los Angeles, Chicago, Orlando, Miami, Ottawa, Montréal, and Québec City. Apparently, I've also visited Paris, Seville, Barcelona, Madrid, Rome, Tuscany, Seattle, Salt Lake City, Washington D.C., Vancouver, Victoria, and Calgary, but I was too young to actually remember it (DAMN!). One of my dream vacations would be to redo the tour of Europe after I finish my undergraduate studies and put my language skills to the test while soaking in the culture. I already live out my other dream vacation: I often go back to NYC during major holidays just to hang out with my old friends and family (half of my relatives live there). Most people say "New York City" and conjure this image of a huge city and the nightlife. I indulge in that, but "New York City" also means small towns and close communities for me. It's the best of both worlds.
  17. Be more specific. I love negative concrit. It can have the rudest tone and say the worst things about my story; but as long as it points out valid weak areas, I love it for the help it provides. Maybe the reviewer's intention wasn't to provide help; but if I can glean something useful from it, all the better for me. If it's a negative review that provides nothing useful, I can laugh at it. Everyone's entitled to their opinion. If you tell me my story sucks, I'm going to retaliate with "Yes, but HOW does it suck? I need details!". If the review doesn't even bother talking about the story and proceeds to insult me for no apparent reason, I just might leave it up so that the rest of the audience can wallow in said reviewer's immaturity. However, if it's someone insulting me for the sake of promoting someone else, I'll delete it because I refuse to encourage flame wars. I think the only reviews that are truly stupid are the ones that don't relate to the story or author in any conceivable way, such as a review saying "Read my story at...". That's called spam and is deleted immediately. If you leave an actual review and end it with "you might be interested in this story that I wrote...", it's not spam and I'll consider it.
  18. I'll put it this way: As far as one of my stories is concerned, it gets a huge number of reviews on FF but few here. I much prefer the reviews here. Why? Because the content of each review is worth a good read. I've always been a firm believer of quality over quantity when it came to reviews. That's why I only post reviews when I can offer detailed concrit. I'm not exactly a fan of the "I luv it! Rite more plz! UPDATE!" reviews (no matter how well-meaning they are). That's just me. I don't write for the reviews. I write for enjoyment (but I still put serious effort into quality). The reviews are a bonus.
  19. I'm Americanadian - don't live in the States but do celebrate American holidays. We managed to work in a nice and quiet Thanksgiving around school and work. The only drawback is that it adds to my seasonal fat stage.
  20. First of all, I'd like to quote one of the board rules: - Only ONE thread per Member. I don't tend to join Yahoo! groups for this very reason. Most of them have nothing BUT spam. Most of them also have absent moderators. You join a Yahoo! group to interact with others with similar interests. Instead, you get 100 messages about Viagra, Cialis, penis enlargement, hot nude girls, etc. If those were my interests, I'd join a group promoting that. If I want to worship a huge penis, I'll worship Knorg (covered that). Those hot girls on cam aren't even hot. And I can appreciate a hot naked girl - I'm bi. Hmm... I wonder if I should start a moderated Yahoo! group for penis enlargement pharmaceuticals. What'd ya think the response would be like?
  21. Your posts indicated that you did indeed have severe contempt for "ethnic" immigrants. The rest of that paragraph is just you re-iterating the same thing you have in every other post and points that I've already adressed and Azalea has backed up. Did you just call me an idiot? Because if you did, you'd better apologize for it AND re-read my post because you didn't seem to grasp it the first time. I know it's not easy to learn a language from scratch - I've done it three times so far. With two of them, I at least had a base to work with. ETA: Thanks to AzaleaWood, comment has been struck out. Good luck to your friend on her citizenship test. I'm sure she'll do well. What you just said about learning a little Russian to meet her half-way on things was exactly what I was talking about.
  22. Forgive me if I get this wrong. Russian? It looks Russian, but there are other languages which use a similar alphabet. The name of the town you gave is located near the western border in Russia, so it could be Belarusian. I don't really know any Russian so I'm working with a little bit of searching and wild guesses. All I can say is that I don't plan on visiting your old town anytime soon, and for a good reason. It took me 5 weeks to learn the Bengali alphabet (it's a clearer version of Sanskrit and it has few characters). So I guess it must be relatively easy in the grand scheme of languages. So is Arabic if you use a really big font. But Cyrillic seems out of my league at the moment.
  23. Solaris: Wow. You certainly hate non-anglophone immigrants. I think I can add my two cents to the language debate, seeing as how I speak 6 different languages and only two of them happen to be a familiar tongue to me now. That, and I've lived in a non-anglophone country starting off with only rudimentary knowledge of the working language. It's fucking hard to learn a new language. Sure, you can pick up a few phrases before moving to a new area, but that's not going to get you by. Every immigrant learns a language to the best of his/her ability, but it's often not enough. It also depends on your teachers. If you learn English in a non-English speaking country, chances are that your instructors weren't native speakers. If you didn't learn from a native speaker, you're going to have a weird accent, mess up your grammar constantly, and use certain words/phrases inappropriately. And don't give me that media source bullshit - media is a homework assignment, not an actual lesson. When a person uses their bad English to communicate with a person like you, they'd give up pretty quickly. It takes a lot of guts to make the attempt; but when a native speaker shoots you down or derides you for not getting it right the first time or mixing English with another language because you don't know the right word for every term, it shakes you up badly and you're even more afraid to try again. The final result - you don't end up learning because your self-esteem on that front has been shot to hell. It has nothing to do with refusing to learn the local language. No one starts out that stubborn. It's people like you that drive immigrants away from the country and give the rest of us Americans a nasty stereotype to battle whenever we end up going to another country. Do me a favor - move to a country where you have no knowledge of the language, see how fast you can pick up the language and how the natives treat you during the process, then get back to me. Cause contrary to what they shove down your throat, not every country automatically teaches their people the oh-so-wonderful language known as American English. I do believe that a person living in a country should pick up the working language eventually. I do believe that we need to exercise patience with them while they try to learn. But how the hell are we displaying any patience or openness if we refuse to meet them half-way on the matter? If everyone fobbed off the responsibility of learning a bit about the newcomer's background onto someone else, there'd be no one left to help the newcomer in the end. In fact, any American worth their salt ought to learn about the newcomer's background. America exists because it borrowed from every other culture in existence and integrated it into their own. By not doing so, you do the country and its foundation a huge disservice. *The Mexicans were here first since the majority of them are technically part Aboriginal* (especially the illegal immigrants) and the Spaniards discovered America far before the English did. American English is actually a mish-mash of several other languages with British English as a base, so everyone's bound to know at least one word of it (inadvertently and to their favor). It's just a matter of how useful said word is. *I realize that the statement is historically and geographically incorrect, but it works as a good defense for the Mexicans nonetheless by hitting close to the truth* AzaleaWood: The United States has ESL programs, especially in large cities with dense immigrant populations. Unfortunately, they're not that effective if you already know the very basics of the language. I haven't heard of any program where you can learn a language before moving to a certain country. However, if the country you plan to emigrate to communicates in a major language (English, French, Spanish, Arabic, etc.), you may be able to find a school or program in your current country that will help you learn some of the language before you emigrate.

Keith: Those two are funny. Now I have to think of reviews. How about you write something sexual and give foe something to really e-mail? I'd contribute something more to this thread, but I've never been a Christian at any point in my life so I haven't read the Bible.
