The Dark Knight

Recommended Posts

I've been ranting and raving about this movie for months and yesterday, I finally saw it. I've always been a huge Batman fan (not psychotic, he's just my favorite superhero). Ever since I saw the trailer during I Am Legend, I've been very excited about it. I'm a movie fanatic, but lately, I've had nothing to dote about. Cloverfield was the last good movie I saw. The last movie I saw was the Happening, which was a let down, but I'm not here to talk about that. I've been preparing for this movie, bought the 'Why So Serious' t-shirt and journal, and even bought the tickets in advance for my cousin, friend, and myself on Thursday. Of course, when buying said ticket, the usher ranted about all the women going to the movie to see Christian Bale in the batsuit, to which I replied that it was the joker that held my interest, not Batman. The Joker has always been my favorite Batman villain and the way he was portrayed in the Dark Knight won my heart. I don't know why, but I've had this unhealthy, non-sexual attraction to sociopaths, including Hannibal Lector. Anyway, I decided to go 9:45 after work with said company, though my friend annoyingly said that she did not like Batman, but still wanted to go to the movies with me (why I will never figure out), but my cousin was just as hyper about it. That morning, I checked the reviews and sure enough, everyone (even the critics, shock!) loved it. The only people saying they didn't like it were saying that the only reason why people liked Heath Ledger's performance was because he died. Well, I hate people saying that they love a movie only because of the actor, so I'm the last person to tote that view, but Ledger was phenomenal, regardless of life or death, that doesn't change his acting in the film. The other people said that the film was too dark, but really, that was sort of the point. The Dark Knight isn't some fluffy superhero flick like Hancock, it has some painful points to make, but that was one of the reasons that it was so damn good! I'm so sick of movies that are afraid of fulfilling their potential because they don't want to be too extreme. In the two days that this film has been out, it's broken all the box office records and I'm not surprised given the quality of the film and the internet hype it created. However, there seems to be some sort of curse surrounding the film (or some pretty weird coincidences). First off, there's the two deaths that happened during the film, though that's not suspicious and I'm not saying that it's creepy, it's just a fact. The three of us went Friday and waited around to go in, but then discovered that there was something wrong with the theater room and all of us 9:45 people had to either get a refund or get another time. Unfortunately, the only other time available was the last at 10:50 (after nine hours of work, that seemed like a stretch, but I was not to be deterred!) and there were only a few seats left. Fortunately, we were the first ones at the scene (my friend makes fun of me for going to the movies so early and being overprepared, but in this case, my paranoia paid off) and got some seats. However, because the movie wouldn't start for another hour, we decided to hang out at my friend's house. Big mistake for me because my friend is an asshole and despite my many attempts of explaining to her my fear of dogs, she continuely forces me to be in contact with her evil yellow lab for 'therapy' despite the fact that this dog has a history of biting strangers, so the entire time I was there, I was incredibly freaked out and anxious. By the time we left for the movie again, it was pouring and thundering and there was lightning, but once again, I really wanted to see the movie, because to me, a good movie is the best drug on the planet. It was scary how close the storm was, but we somehow got there in one piece and actually got into the movie (finally!) While waiting in line, we met a guy that was going his second time and had been to the midnight premiere. He said that they never got to finish the movie because the reel caught on fire and the problem persisted each time the film was loaded. We got to our seats (it was freezing, by the way. We were soaked and sitting under both the speaker and the air conditioner, so we shivered the whole time) and to our luck, not a single person sat in front of us (we were in one of those nifty side seats) and because of the hour, there were only teenagers and twenty-somethings. The previews weren't too good and, horribly, halfway through them, the screen suddenly died, though the speakers still worked, and it took the theatre staff twenty minutes to get things back on track, though they didn't dim the lights until the first twenty minutes of the film was done. We were surrounded by chatting teenagers, but the second that the Joker made his appearance, there was a total, prevailing silence. It was incredible. The whole experience was amazing. Even hours after the movie ended, I was in this strange adrenaline high I get when I see a really good film. The worst, however, was when the power went out and we missed the last five minutes of the movie. After an entire film of mob and riot scenes, I was shocked we didn't riot. Everyone was extremely pissed off, but we were given readmission tickets and escorted out. Let me tell you, walking through a powerless mall at two in the morning reminded me a lot of Dawn of the Dead. It was kind of cool, though. When we got out, the storm had stopped. Normally during these reviews, I give out a few spoilers, but seeing as how I got a free ticket, I'm going to see it again on Tuesday, then write a spoilerific review (if you don't want to know, don't read that post). There were some downsides to the movie, though. The first is the biggest. The Dark Knight was monumental (even though I ended up only getting three hours of sleep before going to work the next day, it was worth it) to the point that I don't think that the third film will be able to live up (I am excited about what villains there will be, though). I'm upset at Ledger's death because, beyond the fact that he was incredible as the Joker, the Joker can never come back in the series. In reality, they could get a new actor, but what would be the point? Ledger was too perfect, too disturbing. The next bad point was that the film was almost too good. It left me with wanting more and the film felt rushed because there was just so much goodness, two and a half hours wasn't nearly enough. The music was also great (I got the soundtrack and it sounds good alone just as with the movie). This movie also created another problem for me: no other movie that comes out this summer can top it. There is really nothing else to look forward to (and don't give me that 'Mamma Mia is coming out!' b.s., because I already got that from both my mom and sister, who don't get the whole 'the Dark Knight was deep' thing) Anyway, anyone who has questions about it or wants to discuss it, just reply. By tuesday, I hope to have seen it again and have more things to gush about.

whoa... paragraphs!

Indeed, when people don't use paragraphs I usually post a reply without replying to anything they said. I just rant on about the fact that they didn't use paragraphs. I use my self-mockery as a shield and my hatred as a weapon!!! Though I don't feel like writing as much as I usually do. So good luck with whatever you wrote, and use paragraphs next time.

Fixed somewhat.
