Just curious to see how many of us were born BEFORE 1965? Anyone? Buehler?

It just seems that there seems to be alot of younger writers (and I have a feeling alot of them under 18 despite the legal warnings). I have met maybe two other authors who were born in the 60's or before, but I think there are a very slight few of us.

So anyway, if you were born in 1965 or before, give a "Hello" and let me have hope that there are still some of us around. unsure.gif

My apologies if I sound "snappy" it has been a rough couple of days. I also mean no disrespect to any younger writers as there are alot of talented younger ones out there. But sometimes I wonder if any of my own "crowd-age group" even write for the adult forums even more.

I wonder if I count as one of those younger writers you are talking about?

Poor little old me wasn't born until February 1966. wink.gif

Oh and I don't think you sound "snappy".

Wow, great to see some other older writers here.

(Again no disrespect to any younger writers born in 1980 or before- I've read some GREAT stuff from some of you) but sometimes I can just tell when I am reading a work from someone who is 16, 17 or 20. Around mid 30's people begin to really have some true experience under their belt and it comes out in the descriptions of their writing and such.

(And hey, I was the same way when I was 15, 16, 20, 22). In fact I look over stuff I wrote at age 16 or 20 or even 25 and sometimes laugh my ass off and think...(And I thought this was good??? Bwahahahaha!) Well it wasn't horrible, but I could tell it lacked style, finess, the use of more descriptive words, a believable plot and all those other annoying things.

Now if only I can learn to do grammar and sentence structure well. I still can not figure out all my proper grammer. dry.gif

Plot, characteraztions, that I got down pat.

I also wanted to add, I was born in February of 1964. But I usually consider anyone within a 8-10 year span of that either +/- way as still in an age group where we group up with similar experiences to draw on (World events, music, TV shows, etc, etc.)

I still remember reel to reel tapes, 8 tracks, AM only in the car, no AC in the car,

Party lines on telephones, that kind of stuff. I remember seeing stuff in Star Trek the Original series and thinking it was "high tech" and way cool! Now they have stuff that blows that away! (McCoy's hypospray, already existed since the early 80's, you have computer "disks" and jump drives now that is light years ahead of the computer stuff they had on ST) Same with the automatic 'ship doors' that made that 'swooshing' noise. Those didn't come around until maybe 1969 I believe. (That's when I first remember seeing them at grocery stores and hospital emergency rooms.)

Ok, enough of us old timers commisserating <sp??>

My brother still has his old reel to reel. And it still sounds great!

Oh and I still have most of my old Albums and 45’s. Man when you could find a 45 with greats songs on both sides was the best.

But 8 tracks kind of sucked. You would be listening to a cool song and click it would change tracks.

Oh and in your other post you said something about Grammar and Sentence structure.

I know what you mean. I have a hell of a time trying to get it right. Maybe that’s where the younger writers have it on us older (more mature) writers. They ain’t forgot what they learned in school. (lol). tongue.gif

OMG! I suppose I'm one of the younger writers. It makes me so happy! 4-67, but yes I do recall Star Trek, and watching it with my dad, Pong, and the computers that required TV screens. And here I was just moping about feeling like one old witch. THANKS!

I am so happy to see more of you coming out and saying "Hi ya!". Ok here is a fun thing...Let's start a "Stuff we remember" and show some of the youngsters what "dinosaurs' we are! :) Feel free to add your own rememberances!

1) Watching the first moonwalk LIVE on TV!

2) Watching about Vietnam on the news, nightly.

3) Reel to reel tapes, then 8 tracks and then cassettes (thinking they were REALLY cool and small!)

4) Cola wars! (Pepsi or Coke!)

5) when TV was more PROGRAM than commercials

6) Schoolhouse rocks! (for those of us in the US)

7) Apple computers, atari, commodore 64's (now THOSE were high tech!)

8) Beta vs. VHS

9) The launch of Cable TV, and MTV when all they played was MUSIC videos and nothing else :P (Video killed the radio star!)

10) AM radio and transistor radios everywhere.

11) the first WALKMAN's.

12) the first 'car phones'/portable phones (big BRICK looking things that took up half your car!)

13) the Energy Crisis of '75 and long lines.

14) When gasoline was around 50 cents a gallon, when you got free gifts when the attendants filled your car (and checked the air and oil for free!)

What else can you all remember or add from your memories?

Memory?

I remember paying a quarter to play pong.

that the only way that 'Breakout' had colored bricks was because there was a plastic filter on the screen.

getting online with a 1200 baud (not kilo-baud, not megabaud...Baud) modem, and that was the SHEEEEEET!

watching Monty Python on TV, when only the really weirdo geeks even knew that public access TV existed.

watching moon landings, live.

Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom. Now there's a mine ripe for some fanfic...

Twilight Zone, first run.

Land of the Giants, first run.

My mom reading The Hobbit to us on a vacation, in a gas station when the car broke down. And everyone was looking at us weird because mom was talking about goblins and dwarves (when only English Majors and truly dedicated bibliophiles knew what LOTR was).

Nixon, and watergate.

I remember that phones didn't belong to us, but to Ma Bell.

I remember that the first calculator we had in a class had about six functions and was bigger than the notebook computer i used ten years ago.

Oh! And the least i've ever paid for a tank of gas was 35 cents.

I'm not one the older writers, sorry, but I just wanted to thank you for considering me one of the youngsters at 36. Online fan communities tend to be strongly skewed towards the 16-20 range, and I often feel like a pompous old lady. So I guess I'm just a pompous young lady! Ack.

Hmmm. I do remember, though...

-- that horrid noise cassette tapes made when loading a program into your top-of-the-line 48K computer.

-- 15 cent stamps.

-- when ATM machines were the new cool thing. And before that, going to the bank to deposit or get out paper money.

-- Gerald Ford tripping over things.

-- LPs and 45s.

-- Mission to Mars, the People Mover, and Innerspace.

-- When Star Trek wasn't retro or Classic.

-- The 1960s Ballantine edition of LOTR with the acid trip 3-part cover. You know, the one with the emus.

-- 1 dollar paperbacks. I think they were 20 cents when I was a kid, but I wasn't paying attention.

-- covered wooden bridges, one lane bridges. (okay, there's still a few left where I grew up.)

-- when you couldn't get strawberries in the grocery store in January.

-- wondering what the heck a Kiwi Fruit was

--

! They made Ultra-man look sophisticated!

-- When Doctor Who had silver hair and a magician's jacket, and his female companion screamed loud enough to shatter Daleks' circuitry (I'm not exaggerating, although the Dalek-shattering episode was a Patrick Troughton episode, I think)

-- Pay phones all over the place. Have you looked for one lately? They've pretty much gone the way of those blue mimeographs.

-- jamming the keys on a typewriter.

-- Merlin. That little red plastic computer game thingie with the blinking lights that looked like an oversized phone.

-- when Dungeons & Dragons first came out, and you had to draw a numbered cardboard chit from a bag because the only type of dice in existence had six sides

-- stockpiling Coca-Cola before New Coke replaced it on the grocery store shelves

-- the first year Toyota Camry came out

-- when cars still had corners

-- when you watched a movie in a theater, you didn't expect to see it again out of the theater

-- Ditto for TV shows, unless they went into reruns

YOU ARE IN A MAZE FULL OF TWISTY PASSAGES, ALL OF THEM ALIKE.

well...just turned 48 on the 19th. Someone here remembered that, although I've not been around for a long while. I really don't feel 48, but now that I'm coming to the end of my 40's, I have to concur with my Uncle (yes I remember his words, although he's been gone for a few years now, God rest his soul), the 40's are the BEST years of your life. Mind you, I'm looking forward to my 50's, I wish I could look as hot as my older sister.

Things I remember:

Falling to Earth: NO FEAR

Discovering my self. ("Hey, who's touching me?" and "What is that I'm touching?")

Knowing that with my eyes closed, I could still see.

Um..yeah, I was 4 when the news of JFK's demise came over the radio, and I understood how solemn that was.

We had a calico cat that hung around the table when we ate.

We had a braided rug on our living room floor.

We had a train set in the attic.

My dad let me "smoke" his pipe when I was five. (I blew outward.)

I guess much of that was not relevant to your question

my sister's roller skates.

TAKE YE THE FLASK!!

Your post made me think of so much shit I'd forgotten. Jon Pertwee and his velvet smoking jackets- da bomb. Got a few wooden bridges left where I live. And payphones? Mimeographs?? Oh my god, those things are extinct now. Still, we say DIAL the phone, don't we?

Remember when you saw cartoons BEFORE the movie? And you attended in your best clothes because it was a special event to even go. Your parents had no idea where you were in the summer from sun-up to sun-down. You didn't have a cell phone. Your crib had lead paint. You didn't wear a seatbelt. The hardest drug was LSD and you liked it.

I think we live in an increasingly dumbing down society. I for one resent the fact my car talks to me. SHUT UP! I KNOW I DIDN'T PUT MY SEATBELT ON, YOU CONTROLLING, MECHANIZED ASS! Ray Bradbury, I think of you everytime I get in the fucking car.

Hey, I'm 23. Just cus I'm not over 40, don't I get to be an older writer?

Dear Harley

You can be as old as you want, after all we have all been reborn many times, so just don't be mentally unflexable and decrepit with it! LOve, Cal :D

Born 1973. Does that make me young or old?

I get tickled when I run across a fic where the youth of the writer just glares from the 'page'. God bless them for trying. But, if you haven't had sex, maybe you shouldn't try to write about. The adage goes, "Write what you know."

There are some very talented younger writers to be found, though.

I'm not really all that old, but because of the times we live in, there are things I remember that would make today's high school students look at me funny.

Like for instance, I remember life without computers. We got our first computer when I was like eight, and it had Windows 3.11. I remember the first time I ever got on the internet. I was in middle school and my science class took a little trip to the computer lab to be introduced to this miraculous new invention. It was dial up, and there was 20 people on it at once looking up a site about teddy bears. It took five minutes to load one page, but we were still in awe. Then my senior year my highschool got a T3 connection. All I could say to that was holy shit...

I remember audio cassattes and video cassettes. Now music is digital and played on mp3 players. I used to record songs off the radio and nobody got their panties in a knot over it. Everybody did it. And movies went to DVD, and now that high definition crap. TV's are now wide and flat...

Isn't it interesting that even someone my age can compare their childhood with the present and it's like two different worlds.

Born in December, 1961, and I remember...

* Black and white television (and the wonder of colours, once my parents bought a colour TV)

* My first calculator, an inch thick, with red numbers

* Getting up in the middle of the night to watch the first men on the Moon, or to watch Muhammed Ali's Rumble in the Jungle

* Playing soccer during the break on my platform shoes - and, in the same year, getting sent home from school for wearing a maxi skirt (instead of a "normal" mini)

* Working in a telex center, and thinking how modern it all was (and sending ACSI porn to friends)

* Discovering computers at the age of 40, and internet, and slash...
