StoryJunkie Posted May 1, 2007 Report Posted May 1, 2007 Cymantics In the mid 20th century the scientists H. Jenny and G. Manners studied the shapes and patterns created by sound vibrations as projected onto mediums of sand and iron filings, introducing a discipline which has been termed Cymantics. http://www.tjmitchell.com/stuart/rosslyn.html (the views expressed in this link are not necessarily the views of StoryJunkie or AFF) There's a blurb about the movie location for that movie with Tom Hanks. What was it called again? The secret of Nymh? The secret life of christ? The secret that evil catholics have been keeping from the rest of the world? (Dang, I really have to go look this up) Scroll down a bit on the page and start the "YouTube" thingy. The music in the background is what they deciphered, and the way they found it was through cymantics. I didn't get it at first, but its kind of neat. Ancient holy music. Cool. I promise not to steal your soul Quote
polywolly Posted May 3, 2007 Report Posted May 3, 2007 *looks around* *soul still intact* Okay, I survived. That was really interesting, and maybe it's the musician in me, but now I want to build one of those things. It reminded me of a story I saw about people whose senses are different because of some hereditary, I think it was neurological, condition. It can affect one or all of the senses. For example, some taste in shapes. "This cheese is really triangular." Some see music in addition to hearing it. Each note is assigned a color so that symphonies turn into entire works of art. I'll admit to being jealous of that one. Wow, I wish I wasn't too lazy to look it up. I know I'm not making it up. Thanks for posting that, SJ. It'll leave me wondering, and trying to recreate it, for days. Quote
StoryJunkie Posted May 3, 2007 Author Report Posted May 3, 2007 I think that ancient dudes did stuff like that because they had no TV Quote
polywolly Posted May 5, 2007 Report Posted May 5, 2007 I think that ancient dudes did stuff like that because they had no TV That's freaky, because I had the very same thought. Quote
StoryJunkie Posted May 5, 2007 Author Report Posted May 5, 2007 insane minds think alike...or was that great minds think alike? Quote
polywolly Posted May 6, 2007 Report Posted May 6, 2007 We're not insane. We're mildly eccentric and slightly under medicated. I wonder how long we can keep this publicly private conversation going on before somebody else chimes in? Quote
StoryJunkie Posted May 6, 2007 Author Report Posted May 6, 2007 Only well-rounded folk attend such threads, for music, science and religion (plus a damn good story somewhere in there I bet) (and a war-veteran to boot thrown in for good measure!) It's simply romantic and connected to ancestor kind of feeling. I mean, any writer wants to know everything, right? *throws down gauntlet* Quote
polywolly Posted May 7, 2007 Report Posted May 7, 2007 I see we're still all by our lonesome. Surely we aren't the only well-rounded folks here. I dare someone else to post something about ancient musical theory, not-watching-tv related creativity, or the like. Or are they not doing it because we want them to... Ah, in that case, we don't want you to post in this thread. Even. *peeks to see if anyone fell for the reverse psychology* Quote
StoryJunkie Posted May 7, 2007 Author Report Posted May 7, 2007 Okay, "The Belittling", "The Challenge", "The Reverse Phychology" and now, "The Blatant Lying" (changed name of topic...heh heh heh) (Think it'll work? Orochimaru thinks so...) Oh, and one more thing...a disclaimer! Can't be here without one, right? Quote
Nanaea Posted May 8, 2007 Report Posted May 8, 2007 Sorry, I'm tone deaf. But it was still neat. Now, can I have my free sex please? Quote
StoryJunkie Posted May 8, 2007 Author Report Posted May 8, 2007 "He reached slowly into his pants and pulled out a long stiff..." *wipes drool from edge of mouth with back of hand* Quote
polywolly Posted May 8, 2007 Report Posted May 8, 2007 Nan, did we mention the free sex was imaginary? Merely the geometric representation of sex and a remnant of olden times when people had no TV, internet, or freely accessible pornography? I laughed myself stupid when I saw the new title for the thread. I can't believe it only lured in one soul. I propose another new one. Frozen Music--and FREE SEX--now with FREE COOKIES (for a limited time) Cookies and a timeline. Those things always get people motivated. Quote
StoryJunkie Posted May 8, 2007 Author Report Posted May 8, 2007 haha! (It didn't let me put the limited time thingy) Alan Rickman thinks it'll work! Quote
Nanaea Posted May 8, 2007 Report Posted May 8, 2007 Actually, it didn't lure me in. This is my forum. I read everything. Quote
Guest Agaib Posted May 10, 2007 Report Posted May 10, 2007 Ah, I've got to admit, it got Me. Who turns down free sex? Quote
Leonhart29 Posted May 10, 2007 Report Posted May 10, 2007 I'm here for the cookies... got any Nutter Butters? Quote
dazzledfirestar Posted May 10, 2007 Report Posted May 10, 2007 I'm kind of in the mood for chocolate chip myself... but Nutter Butters will do in a pinch! Quote
StoryJunkie Posted May 10, 2007 Author Report Posted May 10, 2007 *facepalm* you guys are hopeless! Quote
polywolly Posted May 10, 2007 Report Posted May 10, 2007 It worked! Strangely enough, counting Nan, the score stands tied. Sex - 2 Cookies - 2 Great work, SJ! [whisper]I hope they realize we aren't going to give them any cookies. The free sex, we could probably arrange...[/whiper] Quote
StoryJunkie Posted May 10, 2007 Author Report Posted May 10, 2007 arrange...strange choice of words for a musician...LOL Quote
