Guest echtrae Posted March 4, 2007 Report Posted March 4, 2007 A teacher faces up to 40 years in jail for exposing her pupils to online pornography, amid an outcry from computer experts that she is the innocent victim of malicious software. So, now you can be persecuted for pop-ups? Internet porn pop-ups cost this teacher her job and her freedom Quote
Guest Alien Pirate Pixagi Posted March 5, 2007 Report Posted March 5, 2007 ...Well damn... In my high school we couldn't even go to a website concerning pregnancy, let alone a porn site, and yet 12 year olds can get accidental popups with explicant info? Special. And these bitches didn't even pay the bill for the firewall? There are young children on the net, why the hell aren't they taking better care to make sure their not being inadvertently exposed to crap like this? Quote
quamp Posted March 6, 2007 Report Posted March 6, 2007 It's sad, really. Here's another story on a similar note... Family beats up school Principal Story here BARI, Italy (Reuters) - An irate Italian family beat up a principal because they were unhappy with the grades a young relative had received and a ban on cell phones at school. You fail-a my kid, I break-a you face! "Some people may not like it but standards must be set and rules must be respected if a school is to function," Castorina told reporters. Except for the Mafia, of course... Didn't they realize that he wasn't the one who failed the kid, the teacher did? Quote
StoryJunkie Posted March 6, 2007 Report Posted March 6, 2007 Ack! even if I couldn't unplug the computer, I'd have turned the monitor to face the wall. Was she stunned? Couldn't she have run to the principal's office and told them about it? Then the principal would be facing the music....that's their job. Quote
Guest echtrae Posted March 6, 2007 Report Posted March 6, 2007 The principal did what he/she felt was most appropriate. They found a scapegoat. Quote
Guest Big Samurai Posted March 6, 2007 Report Posted March 6, 2007 I think I need to take my teaching degree out of the garbage and put it in the shredder. Quote
Hermione Malfoy Posted March 6, 2007 Report Posted March 6, 2007 Well, first off, not everybody KNOWS how to use a computer but that wouldn't make them bad teachers. Yes, we are of the technological age and I for one embrace it as much as possible; as an agoraphobic the internet is the only way I get to meet and talk to people... BUT - There are dangers to the internet and at the end of the day it's the Principals (we call them Headmasters or Mistresses!) responsibility to make sure that all computers are checked for these things - not a Supply Teachers. As far as I'm concerned the Principal should be put in jail not the poor woman who is. As for that Italian family... Get a grip would you? Your relative's probably an incompetent dolt! Quote
quamp Posted March 7, 2007 Report Posted March 7, 2007 I think I need to take my teaching degree out of the garbage and put it in the shredder. About as good as my B.B.A. in human resources, hmm? Ah feel your pain. Quote
AmyMcClair Posted March 8, 2007 Report Posted March 8, 2007 Ack! even if I couldn't unplug the computer, I'd have turned the monitor to face the wall. Was she stunned? Couldn't she have run to the principal's office and told them about it? Then the principal would be facing the music....that's their job. No kidding. There is this little button on the monitor that glows, when you push it the image goes away. What was she thinking? That aside, I think that the school should take some responsibility here at least. They didn't provide the proper protections to prevent this kind of thing from happening. If you can't afford the bill (which I doubt), google has a free pop-up blocker. Come on! It may not be perfect, but at least try. Not to mention, it said that the regular teacher was out of the room. What was he/she doing, and where is his/her responsibility in all of this? I am a full believer in the concept of taking responsibility for one's actions, but this is a little excessive. Quote
StoryJunkie Posted March 9, 2007 Report Posted March 9, 2007 Man, I LOVE the way writers think! That article had more holes in it than Swiss cheese. I'm sure there's more to this story than what they're letting on. I bet you anything it was just to garner more sold newspapers or mags, or whatever news line the writer works for. Sure there are general accuracy checks that each story is supposed to go through, but this must be one of those where the facts are presented in such a way that it titillates the reader into wanting to know more. Genius. Or should I say, evil... (I got to say "titillates" in a sentence, haha! ) Quote
dest Posted March 9, 2007 Report Posted March 9, 2007 there is probably more to this story. but from what i read in the story i can't believe this. i mean damn. the fact that she doesn't know computers doesn't mean she is a horrible teacher. depending on what she teaches. if she was in a math class for instance why would she need computer skills? just know enough to put scores into an excel program and she would be fine. but what kind of idiot doesn't have firewall on a school computer system. where i went to high school games/porn were blocked and the librarians could see what you were looking at, just in case you find a site that squeeked by the censors. there is no reason for this woman to be persecuted. yes she was pretty stupid, quite a few ways to prevent the kids from seeing what was on the screen. but its not like she visited a porn site and yelled at the kids to come look. i can see her being punished. reprimanded, maybe even fined because her crisis skills were horrible, but jail? scary since i am currently working toward getting a teaching degree. never pictured this as being something to worry about. Guest Yhitzak Posted March 12, 2007 Report Posted March 12, 2007 Boy, StoryJunkie, you hit the nail right on the head. There's no way to determine *anything* from this article, since there are so very, very many holes in it. I'm sure that the truth is somewhere between this teacher's obvious stupidity (who *wouldn't* have thought to simply cover the screen?) and the school's obvious fire-wall problem. This article proves only one thing: Americans are emotional and reactionary, as well as painfully stupid. Quote
quamp Posted March 12, 2007 Report Posted March 12, 2007 You forgot to add paranoia to that list, nikolatesla1. Sadly, people seem to think it's better to let little Timmy see someone shooting someone else in cold blood than to let him see someone naked. Quote
