Minority

I've seen this issue come up quite a bit on other sites, and it's popped up on this forum as well. I thought I would start a thread though that focused on the issue, rather than focussing on rants about the site or reviews. In short, a discussion thread aimed at the issue itself.

realize that the topic dealt with this particular issue, but I wanted to start a discussion that is, well, un-ranty.

Children

From Maybe I'm Just Bitching

... I can't find a single fic that lacks one or all of these devices: rape, incest, male pregnancy, or even [dubiously] consentual sex between an adult and a child (not just a minor, by the way, but a full-fledged child).

Honestly, I don't get onto AFF very often these days, but after doing a number of searches, I can't think of a time where a story involving a child caught my attention. However I have to say that despite what I used to write when I was sixteen, I find it very disturbing that people would actually write something between an adult and child. It's as disturbing as that guy in Florida who had videos of adults having sex with two and three year olds.

What I could understand a person being intrigued by is the emotional and psychological aspects of such a story. There are people [including myself] who might like to read a story involving sexuality in or with children with those aspects as the story's focus, but the majority of stories that occur are often explicit and focus on a pornographic nature.

Adolescence

From This is a Shame

...dealing with "minority" can be different from country to country. Legal consent age is 16 in Canada, majority at 18. All I know in the USA is that majority it 21...

Minority is a tricky issue, and these days the minors couldn't even tell you what "age of consent" means. Where I come from, it's unusual for anybody to be a virgin after 14.

Often times media is blamed for teenaged sex. Nobody stops and thinks about other possible factors, such as social and psychological issues. Even in fiction it's rare for people to stop and think about sexuality between two 'minors'. Normally it's simply considered a case of "raging teenage hormones."

Rarely it's taken into account the alienation that adolescents encounter between the sexuality found in media [which adults allow them to watch,] sexualization among their peers [i'm a 20 year old virgin and ti's still frustrating being the only virgin in a group of 14 friends.]

There is also the issue of sensory deprivation, specifically that of touch. You know how Moe on The Simpsons cries about how his daddy wouldn't hug him when he was young? That isn't so stupid as it sounds. As children grow older, physical affection between them and their parents dramatically declines. One of the reasons teenaged sex occurs is because those kids are trying to make up for the little physical contact they would otherwise receive.

Frankly, I would like to see more writers focus on these kinds of aspects when involving minors, but it seems many people are too lazy to explore them. I could be wrong, but that's what it seems like.

What are your thoughts on the involvement minors in adult fiction?

Firstly I wish I had kept my virginity as long as you. I lost mine before I knew what it was...

A lot of my stories deal with characters ranging from 16 - 19 and even younger at times. This is because I am trying to deal with a lot of issues from my childhood and writing happens to help. I've been focussing majorly on the psychological aspects of love, sex and the like. Most of my characters are dealing with abuse from parents and family in many different ways and as such I end up with a large range of different ways the characters deal with the situations.

My shadowlander's saga mostly deals with these issues, as well as nightmares and other struggles abused children go through. While the first book was mild in comparison, only mentions of child molestation and rape, the second book is something else and I fear I might have gone to far with a few parts in which I actually went into depths of a group of girls remembering being part of a child porn ring and the things they were forced to do to each other. It was rather hard on me to write seeing as I needed to dig into emotions I tend to block out. My wife insisted I write the scene as best I could and even held me afterwards.

I tend to only write the more sexual parts about the characters love interest, usually someone only a year age difference, and try to not go into too much depths of the abuse by the adults, just the emotions they stir up after the fact. So some of the scenes involving a child being rapes I will move to another child's perspective paying close attention to the fear that child feels while listening to their friend or siblings cries from another room. Rather emotional no matter how I work around it. The last part of Shadowlands had me so shaken and feeling sick from my own tales that I needed to take a break from writing for a month or so.

My other two novels deal with teenaged as well, however one is based on my past, with flashbacks to my childhood and the other is a Victoria Horror and well in those days people did things young. The only stories I have that deal with adult characters are actually my erotica. I find I sometimes need to write a random sex scene that is guilt free and I’m finally getting around to one, but it is slow work in comparison to my other works.

I wish there were more stories that deal with the emotional aspects of children and not just random sex. Stories like John Saul’s “Suffer the Children” or “Comes the blind fury” come to mind. I love his way to dealing with children who have been abused in many ways. His works really got me writing my stories the way I do now.

Anyone else write these kinds of tales I would love to know.

Anyways, Sorry to ramble. This is a subject that is close to me. Been dealing with writing this kind of thing for 10 years now and it isn’t easy.

I agree with this, I think things need to be elaborated upon in terms of science behind ideas. Psychology should be taken into account, and I think it makes a story much more enjoyable and less of a shock about what is going on.

I honestly do not think it necessary to write about minors- but I am guessing that in some stories it is expressing issues... however if a story is going to be published for other to read, the author must always keep in mind the story needs to be explainable and identifiable by the readers, not just themselves.

I do have a character at the age of 14, but thats the youngest character I plan on having. And I don't plan on having an enexplained sexual event happening, I do plan to have something behind it. I don't like stories that focus on minors and sex especially, so this boy is only something of a side occurance.

I think the involvement of a minor, in short, should be what it is intended to be so long as there is substance behind it. But I would prefer stories with people of at least ages 16.

However, yes, it does range from country to country.
