Wow, Not Only A Lack Of Maturity, But Stupid Too!

If they log in from a school or library, we could get caught in a web of trouble because those log files are scanned daily (or are supposed to be... heh). Not only that, but if they are found via a search engine of some kind, then the government has all those records.

Actually, my HS blocks access to sites such as this (hell, i can't even look up information on pregnancy for a school project!) and i live in NYC and attended a very liberal (and GAY!) art school. So, really, the chances that any other student in most other schools/areas would be rather slim. Of course, this is speculation on my part. I'm a total elitist when it comes to the whole "If you can't get it in NY, you can't get it anywhere" thing.

It's insane that they would shut down sites just beacause kids know they exist and go to them. It appears that soon AFF.net may have to make people get an account in order to even read stories.

Actually... that's not such a bad idea...

The people from the 60s in charge now aren't likely to be the ones that were particularly liberal or cheerful. Instead, we're getting the ones who were hard assed and anti-social at that time, and probably harbor some lingering hatred for what the other half appreciated back then.

I work in one of the computer labs at my liberal and gay NYC art school (Pixagi, PI doesn't ring a bell, does it?). And I really thought that with college life came a certain amount of maturity, but I get a surprise every now and then.

Why? Well, as part of my job, I get to walk around and yell at people for not following the rules. Food or drink, gluing things, defacing property. . . looking at porn. It never fails -- someone is always looking at fucking porn. I mean, aside from the embarrassment of getting caught, isn't there something in the back of their minds that should be telling them that there is something better they could be doing while out of the house?

(Note. I am all for porn. Don't you dare think otherwise.)

I guess my point is that if college students can't exhibit the kind of restraint it takes to not look at naughty stuff while in a public place, I have little hope in teenagers being able to do the same. So for Christ's sake, if there isn't a library or high school that has these barrier up and running, there is something wrong with the people in charge.

Our university lets you look at it as long as no one around you complains. If they do, then you have to close it. The rule is posted on the wall, no joke. And, no, I've never tried it! lol

Nice. Research and porn at once! I can just see it, a desktop with 50 browser windows, 3 for the project and 47 for porn. Though in all fairness, there are people who can manage several things at once and still do fine.

When I came back at my mother's, I had to stop at Quebec's airport for an hour and a half. They offer a WIFI net service... which I thought was a good thing, finally!. At least I could check my mails.

But when I wanted to go on AFF because I was bored to death after checking the so-said emails, I was susprised - and not at all at the same time - that I couldn't even remotely access it. The network had blocked it under "pornography".

*tilts her head* Oh-kay... adult themes doesn't always mean porn, dudes >_>.

On the other hand, I can understand why they blocked it. It's a public place, and porn well... doesn't normally manage with "public". But the fact I couldn't access this forum because the network also blocked it under "pornography" got on my nerves.

I'll try this when I get back in Montreal (because I'll be another hour and a half stuck at Quebec Airport) - use google and try to find adult images. I bet I can.

Actually, now that Canada is very conservative, I'm not surprised. A lot of video games that are trying to be banned in the States are actually banned in Canada and in order to play them you need to either go to the US and buy them or order them over the net.

It's like buying fireworks in Illinois!

If I find people on AFF, it's a different story. It hasn't happened yet, though. It's usually freshman boys giggling about penises.

I have no problem with reading -- that's so much less obvious. But it really is kinda disruptive when the person next to you is watching hardcore penetration. The giggling alone is pretty annoying tongue.gif

Actually, funny story. One of the ex-monitors thought it would be brilliant to watch porn while on the job. Added to that, she had a penchant for watching movies while on the clock, a definite no-no. So what does she do when she gets fired for the porn? She leaves an email about her shift (which I didn't work, fortunately), pratically indicting her co-workers for "watchin movies and goofin' off [cause] it's a laid back shift." She sent it to our bosses.

Wow, that's not the person in my platoon I want leading the charge up the hill. laugh.gif

the internet is fascinating and addicting.

If you have addictive penchants, it's probably not a good idea to be going on the internet at work, even at noon or on breaks. Just make it a rule.

God, its awful, I know. do you know how hard it is for me to NOT play minesweeper and freecell? It's all I can think about when I'm idle. So I go sweep the floor or bug the dispatcher. I go for a cup of coffee, or help with the phones. If its a slow day, I bitch about the customers or some crazy news item.

I used to work without the net and technically... I don't mind. I don't mind as long as I have something to do. I can live without a TV, without games and all as long as I have something else to occupy my idle time. Because me and staying idle - unless I feel like doing absoutely nothing - has never worked well together.

At work, if I don't have access to the net, I'll write or I'll chat with my bosses. I just find other ways to occupy my idle time... but I usually end up writing. This way my bosses think I still work *laughs*.

Well, modern workplaces do seem to suffer from enough inefficiency to have either all the workload dumped on a few people or to leave most everyone nothing to do most of the time. I can see writing a few novel length stories at some jobs.

Well, if just Being There is all that's important, I don't see a problem with multi-tasking. My mom used to "watch" TV and knit at the same time. Don't know how she did it. I think she was used to the radio.....

My work isn't hard, and I work very fast. I'm assigned something and I work on it right away. It's usually small texts (4-5 lines) or things to translate, sheets to work over... I'm usually done with my daily workload in an hour or two. I work seven and a half hour everyday, so for the remaining six hours, I have to do something.

It doesn't bother my bosses, as I keep quiet and I don't disturb them. Of course I always ask if there's something they need me to do... but usually it's "Nah, relax. We're not stressed here." I might even be ahead of my schedule at the moment, as my bosses need to check something over and until they do, I don't have any workload O_o'.

At the moment, I'm off. There was a meeting with the executive director and my boss told me "Stay home. You can even work on the beach if you want to *laughs*." And so I did XD.

i do agree that minors should stay off the site, because i won't lie i have gotten my fair share of bad reviews but they have only helped make my stories better. And yes there are some very mean people on this site, and if you can't take that then you have no reason to be on the site.

People from the 60's are ruling the world now.

Doesn't that just seem like the most ironic thing in the world?

The people of the 60's enjoyed so much freedom, (and at the same time, saw so many consequences), and they are taking the very freedom they enjoyed away from their own children!

My friend's kids tell me all the time, "If you had kids, they wouldn't get away with anything, 'cause you've already done it and you'd catch them."

They're absolutely right.

I'm a kid of the '70s which is almost as bad as the '60s. A lot of drugs going on in my school. Even some of the nerdy ones you'd find smoking pot on the weekends. And yeah, my parents were ignorant, so I got away with a lot. That doesn't mean if I had kids I'd turn a blind eye. My parents did catch me drinking and gave me holy hell, I'd figure it would be my job to give my kids holy hell over anything I knew they were doing.

Yeah, my husband's life was no bowl of cherries, and he's tougher on the kids than I am. I allow way more freedoms to them than he would. My theory is, if they've got it, they won't want it. It works sometimes. (I'm not talking about when they were in elementary school, but around 13 -15, when they challenge you the most) He's more into crushing the spirit and laying down the law. (Not that I think he's wrong, since I understand where he is coming from when he does that)

One of our business associates raised her kids like this: "I'm not here to judge you, I'm here to be your guide. If you want the good things in life, the atv's, the motorcycle, the nice home, you've got to work for them. If you party, you won't get those things." When her son came home at 2am when he was supposed to be back by midnight, all she told him was: "You're pushin it." In the morning he explained that he had had a difficult time getting a ride back. She never grounded her kids or punished them. She never had to.
