Before his death Minato split the Kyuubi into Yin and Yang and sealed the two halves inti his wife Kushina and daughter Naruko.

Years later both Kushina and Naruko were sent by the Hokage to Genbu the Island Turtle to learn from Killer Bee how to control the Kyuubi power.
