I believe it had character named bear?(he was human) or something similar. He took a young man in off the street etc. Any help would be lovely, I can't remember much else that would be useful.

This could possibly be All Souls Pass by S. A. Payne. I have only read it on her pay site though. There is a guy named Luke who has a drug addict room mate named Bear, but he is actually taken in by a vampire named Macy and his human companion York.
