Have you ever wanted to shoot the kids?!?

Ok, I'm on Hughes Net hi-speed. Got it on Thanksgiving so I'm still learning how to deal with it..

Yesterday, system was slower than my old dial-up. So hey, figured I need to do some maintainance on the PC. Downloaded some registry clean-up software, installed all these new MS upgrades, Defragged, etc, etc, etc.. Spent four hours doing all this crap. To no avail!! The speed got even WORSE last night..

So I shut down Satellite system, initiated full reboot (Ok, had problem right after Christmas, so technical support had already walked me through all this - and I write things down in case I need them again).... Etc, etc, etc..... After another hour - problem got worse. By now I couldn't even connect to internet!! Forced to call 'India' technical support. At least this guy spoke good english this time!

After another thirty minutes we FINALLY tracked problem down. Fair Access policy was enacted when there was continuous downloads from 6pm-10pm the night before.. Hmmmmm... That's when I sat in my room watching TV and my two younger kids were playing on the net. (They're usually looking up cheats for Sims, though they've found youtube since we got hi-speed)...

Ah-HA!!! Course the culprits CLAIMED to have only watched 2-3 youtubes each. Then under 'dad' interrogation admitted 'well, um, maybe we watched more? I-dunno!' So now they are banned from youtube, and probably the one PC with internet access.. Not sure how long I'll decide to keep them off this PC though... I'm still ticked..

So if I've ever wanted to ducttape my two younger ones to the ceilings of their rooms - and/or - shoot them... It's now!! God I can't wait until they're off in college like my first is fixing to do!! (Well, I say that now... We'll see how I feel then. Maybe I'll just buy a cockatoo if I get lonely?)

Why would four hours of youtube cause your computer to slow down? I've watched more hours of porn than that on free sites in a single sitting and its never bugged my laptop like that.

#1 - This is Satellite link - not true wi-fi. On the university wi-fi I could also watch hours of youtube and/or other vid and not be bothered. But what I never realized is that it's actually a slow download. When you pay per 'satellite packet of download' - it does hurt after a couple hours..... Wish I could get a high-speed cable server, but it's not available in my area.

Oh, and those Microsoft Automatic updates? Boy - that REALLY knicks you hard in the wallet!! Takes up all your download allotment + some!!!! Worse than youtubes!!! Bad thing is - you don't even KNOW that you're computer's done it. Until you can't get on until the next 24 hour cycle!

#2 - The kid incident was the first problem. Today, I've spent more time on the phone to tech support - than actually online! The only way the damned modem will get back online for a little is to unplug and reboot - or - have tech support shut it down, erase all software, and reboot remotely. Seems one of the core software programs is continually degrading... They tried to just send a technician out. But after four times of crashing today I demanded a whole new modem + a technician to come out. Since it's less than 7 weeks old - damn right they did it!!!

So I MIGHT be online the next two days - might not. Depends on how long the software reboot holds after each unplug/replug session before it fragments to nothingness again...

Do I recommend Hughes Net now - NOPE..... But I'm in the country and stuck with it until AT&T gets off their ass and runs a fiberoptic cable on my road's telephone poles!!

It wasn't just all the youtube access which caused your slowdown, I'm sure. I would be checking their systems for downloaded stuff as well. Because that's the reason they gave you for bottlenecking, basically, was that you exceeded what they (your ISP) considered fair bandwidth usage. Depending on the ISP, that usage doesn't have to be a whole lot, in reality.

It's why I have to pay extra to ensure I ALWAYS have good connection and don't get bottlenecked. With the ftp stuff I do, and various other things, were I on a normal connection, that would happen to me too.

Ugh, satellite internet.

I can empathize with your lack of broadband. I live in a relatively populated area, but since none of the national cable companies could operate here and two smaller cable companies had the region locked up in terms of cable TV, they were the ones responsible for laying down fiber optic cables. I didn't get a cable modem until last year because both of them were too cheap to lay down the infrastructure. It's a huge problem on a national scale, and has to do with cable operators holding monopolies on broadband access in their markets and thus not having an incentive to lay down fiber optic cable or increase bandwidth for their customers since they know that their customers have no alternatives. Hell, if my area didn't get DSL I probably never would've even got cable and would be stuck with a one-way cable modem like I was for years.

Hopefully Wi-Max will be available in your area soon, then you might see some decent broadband in your area.

Thanks for the sympathy - and the info....

Grrrrrr.... no tech calling for appointment to give me my new modem... Yet another call... Only unplugged the dratted thing three times yesterday and once today - in order to reset it and get back online.... Works better than the bull they've been trying.. **snicker**

Bad thing is, Cable lines run within 2.5 miles of me on both ends of my road. I'm on a connector between two major state highways... So close.. Yet so far....

Lol, just kidding, I'd shoot the ugly ones cause they don't turn me on.

Ok, that just DOESN'T sound right....... Granted, robots 'interfacing' turns me on - so who am I to talk?!?
