  1. I love to use them, but I have been undergoing therapy to get over my addiction. I use them for trailing thoughts, pauses, and to indicate dramatic vocal inflections. I was always taught that three dots, with spaces between, were used in the middle of sentences, and four dots at the end. Three dots and one period, basically. I see that method used in many printed books.

After I started writing fan fiction, I ebgan getting lots of criticism for ellipses usage. Some people wanted them spaced, not spaced, used, not used, three dots, four dots, or only used at the ends of sentences. I found that no matter hwo i used them there was always someone who thought it was wrong. So I just imitate what I see in printed books.

If it works for Scribner, Plume, Penguin, etc. then it works for me.

  2. Light rock, Classic Rock, Jazz, Blues, Classic country, ( that means before the eighties) New Age, Classical, Songtracks, and 90's Alternative. When I listen to whichever genre depends on what type scene I am shooting for. It has to have good lyrics. Meaningful lyrics, anyhow.

When I wrote " I, Pormise" I listed to a lot of Enya, with most of the Harry Potter it was Simon and Garfunkel, and with this story it has been almost everything.

  3. Both. Obviously in fan fiction, there is more stuff that you personally wouldn't know, so you have to rely on imagination. But I believe in trying to write as much of what you know as possible, just to give the story some grounding.

  4. FairlightMuse: Personally, I think that I could write M/M provided that I did research on the physical and intra-societal aspects of it. I don't think you necessarily need to be a gay man, or a man at all, in order to write it effectively. When it comes to things like emotional aspects, I think it's possible to imagine yourself in that scenario and get an idea of how you'd feel if you were in that position.

The beauty of writing about subjects like sex and murder is that having first-hand experience isn't a pre-requisite. You don't need to kill a person to write about a murderer. You don't need to have sex with an animal to write about bestiality.

On the other hand, if you don't handle a topic like M/M well, you can end up insulting a lot of people, and it's not limited to gay male readers. From that perspective, I can see why you'd be apprehensive about writing M/M.

Ah...true. Imagination is a wonderful tool for a writer. I have put in a few things that I myself have not personally experienced, and in retrospect I can see faults with some of the details. However, the longer we live the more we learn. One day, I may well write the M/M. It certainly doesn't gross me out. Like you said, I just wouldn't want to offend anyone. And when I say offend, I don't mean in the sense that close-minded people get offended at anything scandalous; but in the sense that culturally I wouldn't wish to insult anyone.

  5. I write a lot of M/M... but I've done my research, and I'm not talking about renting videos either.  I have a very good friend I've known since we were 13 or so.  He's gay, proud of it, and is my main source of information about "how does it feel, what do you think about, are men actually like that, is that even physically possible"?  Just because I'm not a man doesn't mean I can't write about it.  If that was the case then when I write Het I wouldn't be able to have the man interacting with the woman - just kinda standing there like a cardboard cut out.

I've read lot's of good M/M and F/F fictions, so I have no problems with people writing them. I just don't feel I have the experience to write them well enough. You are very lucky to have a such a helpful friend, and he is lucky to have such an openminded friend as yourself. smile.gif

  6. I won't write about minors in sexual situations. Not so much from any ethical standpoint, because to write about something does not necessarily mean to advocate it, but because it holds no interest for me. I can't get into it reading it, so I wouldn't enjoy writing it.

Also, I would never presume to write sex scenes between two men, since, because I am not a guy, I couldn't accurately capture the emotions and psychology.

Anything else is fair game I figure. I like how writing gives us the chance to explore and test ourselves on new horizons.

  7. I most certainly would. I want them to write lots and lots of fan fiction for their own perverted pleasure, I want them to post it on places like this, and get lot's of views and make lot's of friends who share ships in common with them. As long as I am making all the money, of course.

I love being able to write fanfiction, so what kind of hyprocrite would I be if I refused that pleasure to my fans? wink.gif

  8. Hello! I'm FairlightMuse, and I have been an author here for several years. Love reading the stories, and giving reviews. I mostly write and read Harry Potter, LOTR, and Peter Pan. All het fics; Remus and Hermione being my main ship, I suppose. Right now I am in the middle of a huge HP story-writing project, so I really shouldn't be hanging out on the forum, but I just can't resist!
