Serena is descended from one of the original families that came in MayFlower. So she is one of the blue blood.But george is not. However he is very rich. Thus her father does not agree to the match. Serena finds out from her stepmother that her family is in debt. And that they are unable to pay it. George also finds out about it. He offers to pay the debts but in exchange Serena has to marry him. They get married against her fathers wish and George thinks Serena married him for money and not for love. Their marriage was bumpy because of this. But they do find that they love each iother and their marriage becomes a happy one. In the story Serena also finds out that, she was not her fathers daughter. That her mother had an affair and she was the result. And that her step mother's daughter, her stepsister is her fathers child. But her stepsister is known to the world as serena’s fathers stepdaughter. Her father tells her that even though they do not share blood Serena will always be his precious daughter. Later Her father also accepts her marriage.
