GoT Targaryen AU

So this could go here or under Books, I put it here because this section seems to get more traffic. This presumes that Jon Snow is the son of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen.

In an AU where things went differently, Aerys died, and Rhaegar lived to ascend to the Iron Throne. Robert's Rebellion was defeated, the kingdoms more or less stabilized, and most people wound up basically going home and calling it a day.

Jon (and Lyanna, if she survived) is brought to King's Landing, where he belongs as the son of the king. Unfortunately, because he's not the "Visenya" that Rhaegar wanted, he's basically the unfavorite. Even if she survived the difficult birth, Lyanna isn't going to be having anymore children, which means that, bluntly speaking, half the reason for the war is gone. Not to say that they're not cared for, as befits their stations, but Rhaegar just wants nothing to do with them, and a lot of people around all look at Jon as the cause of the war.

But Elia Martell doesn't quite look at things that way. Sure, she's not happy to have a living reminder of how her husband shamed her around, but of all the people she can blame for that situation and the war, Jon isn't one of them, since his only sin was being born. On top of that, she knows, from her own family and from lookin at history, how important a good relationship between highborn siblings can be. Namely, she wants to avoid another Blackfyre situation, so she treats Jon fairly, though not lovingly, and encourages her children to be close to their half-brother.

If Lyanna survived, obviously some tension exists between the two, but they also have some common ground; mostly disillusionment with Rhaegar and his obsession with prophecy, as well as love for their children and siblings. I actually imagine something happening to Jon, like he gets sick, and Lyanna panics because she doesn't know what to do, only to wind up begging Elia for help. They don't like each other, by any stretch, but they can manage to get along. It helps that they both know they'd prefer it if Lyanna could just take Jon and go home to Winterfell.

Aegon likes to emulate his father, so he basically pretends Jon isn't around most of the time. Rhaenys is more free thinking and happy to have him around. She actually prefers him to Aegon, mostly because she can't get away from Aegon, but her relationship with Jon is largely a choice, and they both know that. As a result, Jon winds up spending a lot of time with Rhaenys trying to impress her and keep her happy, both because she's older and wiser AND because she's gone weeks without talking to him when he upsets her.

By the time they start growing up, they've basically gone full Targaryen. Jon is Rhaenys's, and they both refuse separation.

Of course, it doesn't help that Jon, while unfavorite, is still a member of the royal family and a valuable bargaining chip with the Seven Kingdoms. The Tyrells have had their eyes on a royal marriage for ages, and a marriage might well serve to bring the Iron Islands or the North back into the fold. Margaery Tyrell, Asha Greyjoy, or even one of the Stark daughters are all viable candidates.

Jon lives as a Targaryen in King's Landing, and winds up in a soft sub/dom relationship with Rhaenys, while he's also expected to be used to tie another family to the royals. Of course Daenerys can also be around and have similar attachment issues with her nephew. And if Lyanna survived, well, Jon is the only other wolf around, wolves stick together, and he's basically all she has left at a certain point.

I also have this weird thought of Aegon being a girl who resents her place. She's Visenya, but wants to be Aegon, the "Prince who was Promised," heir to the throne. She refuses to stop trying to be a prince, dressing like it, wearing her hair short, etc., and resents Jon for actually being what she wants to be and not being bad enough to really hate. He's the crown prince, good at princely things like fighting and riding, Rhaenys likes him better, and worst of all, he's always being so disgustingly kind to her. He only ever tries to be the best brother he can, he never does anything to justify her anger at him, so she's perpetually angry at him and herself, while loving her only brother dearly. When she finally has her first period, she has a meltdown that winds up with her going to him and basically raping him while raging about how she doesn't like who she is. She eventually provokes him to angrily force himself on her, which makes her happy because he "finally did something wrong." Then she decides that she'll make sure to put Jon on the Iron Throne, so that they and Rhaenys can rule the Seven Kingdoms together.
