When I think of fics like this, I think of movies such as The Terminal or Girl With a Pearl Earring. You meet characters (but don't know how they got where they are), things happen to the characters, and then the story is over. You see only what is happening to them in the particular stretch of time that the fic/movie is going on for. I've written a few of these. Anyone else? If you have, have you ever gotten the "WTF is going on here?!" comments... Like a fic can't be good without knowing the character's entire life story and reasoning behind every action. I always hand these over to friends (that I know are literate) and they get it just fine. It's a little demoralizing, to say the least... They stay in a folder that I like to think of as "unfinished ideas," although I will probably never add anything else to them. I don't really know what to do with these other than just tuck them away because I don't think anyone else would appreciate them. Actually, I take that back. I've posted one story that took place maybe over the matter of a few hours, but there was not much back story and it was mostly a writing exercise that turned into a PWP But, it was also a fanfic, which may not count since people familiar with the subject would already know a little something about the characters regardless if it's AU or OOC, or whatever... Kettle Posted July 9, 2008 Report Share Posted July 9, 2008 It's funny you should mention this because last night I got a mental image of [male character] up against a wall, looking on in surprise as [female character] helps herself to his dick (in an oral sex way, not a bloody penis-chopping way) and I really wanna write just that - but I can't justify writing "just that" to myself. I feel like I have to have some kind of motivation and a little bit of background or else it's not a "proper" story. I recently got into this style as I got into the fandom of an on-going anime series. It seems that some of the readers of Inu stories are...borderline illterate? I hate to be a bitch, but y'know, it is what it is. I really enjoy heat of the moment stories. I don't need to know the back story or the motivation. I prefer to let my mind wander, feel what the writer was trying to capute and imagine what could have happened. The setting Kettle posted...I'd wonder how he got there, why was she doing that, and so on. The wondering would make it even more tantilizing. So...then...why do some readers have to know every single intimate detail of every single thing going on in every single character's mind and every single step that got them to this point when reading a fic? Which, of course, means that you have to spell every little detail out. I hate it when people say this because I like to think that there are some rather intelligent readers out there! However, it does seem that in some fandoms you just have to treat them this way. Most of my stories have started with these snapshots in time. Sometimes I build on them, sometimes I don't. I say just do it, write what you want and ignore the silly little fanbrats who feel the need to be over-informed. She rarely publishes it, but she's pretty damn good. I should get her to put more of that on AFF instead of forcing me to read and critique it and then hiding it in an itty bitty folder on her hard drive where no one will see it. I only treat my readers like they're idiots if I'm writing an English essay. English teachers get mad if you don't spell everything out (literally. Mrs. D, Mrs. M, and Mrs. N all had this thing about contractions), and when English teachers get mad, they absorb your grade in order to stay calm. It's the only way they have to stay alive. I digress. If I'm not writing an essay specifically for the purpose of passing a class, I pretty much just let them figure it out for themselves. It's more fun for all of us that way. My readers get to solve a little bitty mystery, and I don't have to sit there and explain every Star Trek allusion. It's O-S-S-I-M awesome. They can just draw a picture of Character X sucking off Character Y and nobody will complain (unless the art is ugly). Granted, if you write a canon pairing you can get away with it, even though there might still be people like me complaining about the lack of context. If I could draw I would so draw this picture. It's so clear in my mind (I have a filthy gutter brain). In fact [female character] has two canon love interests, neither of which are [male character]. [Male character] is totally unattached for the entire series but he's often shipped with other guys. I'm dropping little hints to [female character]'s motivation to keep the readers guessing ([male character] is kinda just along for the ride - not that he's complaining ). Is she upset? Is she lonely? Is she mad at someone? Was she hot for [male character] all along? Can her usual love interest not do it right? Is she just drunk and horny? But a few have grown into stories. Sometimes, I just have to write the scene....give it life, so to speak. And then, and only then, will it leave me alone!
