Pictures on stories?

The legal problems would come up strong if we allowed that to happen on the site.

So the answer would be sadly no.

I'll wait for manta2g or xax to give you a more detailed response, but honestly, it's more how the bandwidth would be used up by the graphics loading. It's more a resource issue than anything, really, as to why I personally would say no to something like that. But, this is not my call, so you guys have to wait for them.

It really does seem like a big legal issue...

Aff has existed in peace due to it being literature, no images.

Images make this a multi-media pornographic site, a can of worms that really really ought not to be opened.

If Jaxxy is comfortable with it, I'm all for it, but this just seems like a verrrry bad idea.

Demongoddess is correct in the bandwidth department. Adding images would take up a whole lot more, hence the reason most of these sites are down.

And it would open up legally a whole can of worms. Most of the newest banners I have seen for the HP catergories on other sites use the pictures from the internet and other websites, which some don't even have disclaimers on them. We would have to have not only the disclaimer on the stories but then people I think would get mad that they couldn't post their banners because not one, including the ones myself have made, have the disclaimer they don't own the pictures. Hence the reason I no longer make banners. And then we would have to handle the whole issue with people saying other people stole their banners and truthfully, I think it is more trouble then it is worth. The last thing we need on the site is more legal issues.

That's just my input on the whole deal. It would have been a great idea except for the bandwidth and the legal issues.

I think everyone is forgetting that AFFN did have a gallery for a while-- not integrated into story submissions, but the "gallery" link is still there on the page header, even though the link is dead.

But yeah, I'd agree with the other mods-- it does take up a lot of bandwidth, and non-textual fanworks have tended to be more heavily litigated against in the past (but I am very much not a lawyer), so although I do like the idea I don't think we can really seriously consider it at this time.

Many sites host both fanfiction and fanart. However, these sites are also small and can monitor everything a little more easily.

For some reason, adult graphic art is more frowned upon and more heavily censored than adult literature. The staff would have to work harder to ensure that the art doesn't cause trouble. God knows that AFF has enough trouble with minors and improper disclaimers as it is. Seriously, some people actually change the default disclaimer to invalidate it (don't ask me why).

I can understand why the site staff wouldn't want to take that risk. If I were a site staff member, I wouldn't either. Honestly, the only solution I can think of is restricting adult-rated artwork to site members only (which the gallery did). Right now, the forums are in the process of becoming publicized, so I don't see a private gallery happening.

Meanwhile, I suppose you could suffice with providing links to artwork. So far, it's been working.

Even restricting access to a site gallery, we'd still be running into resource issues. If those graphics are embedded in a story, that creates that much more usage count against our monthly bandwidth allowance. Every time an image file draws in a page, whether a gallery or a story, it counts against bandwidth. Every time you view a web page itself, that counts towards bandwidth totals. That's why I don't foresee this site ever hosting an image gallery. At least not for a very long time. As to embedding a picture into a story chapter, the archive software isn't set to allow that. Only some text formatting commands.

Looking further, the blog option ported into the forum simply makes for a link to a user's blog, whether it's an LJ or a MySpace. Can easily customize that in future to provide linkage to BOTH. That's all it would be.

Pretty much, deviantArt and such is for Art and we're for Stories. Even says so in the names of our sites! biggrin.gif

Our bandwidth usage approaches 4000GB a month as it is (!), and for my part, I'm not too interested in spending time in the slam over a little fan art. Much more interested in continuing to exist in the free world and making sure your Stories stay up.

is that one of the reasons why talk of the comic section fizzled away?

suggested ages ago that any budding artists might want to convert fics into comics. everyone seemed for it at first, but no one talks about it anymore.
