I’ve got a bizarre and random question for all my fellow Americans from The South and Might-as-well-be-the-South. Exactly how many definitions or uses do you recognize for the word “Waller,” and what are they? (Verbs, nouns, etc. are all accepted.)

In my experience living in NC my whole life, it’s simply the Southern pronunciation for “wallow,” so it’s used in all of the same contexts as that word.

DrunkenScotsman, it may not apply across the board or all the South, but I know of at least one other usage that doesn’t fit the definition for “wallow.”

The point could be argued that the meanings are adjacent if not identical—take “Buffalo wallers,” for example—but there is enough difference to mention. A bison waller is a crater created by a bison wallering, but if you need to widen out…say, a deep, narrow post-hole in the ground or a partially clogged duct…you don’t roll around in a circle on the ground and grunt. (Unless you’re my husband trying to get out of planting a tree.) You sort of jiggle the post-hole digger, pipe snake, or whatnot up and down, side-to side, and in wonky circles until the hole is wide enough.
It could also be that my husband tortures the English language more than I thought. 😆 He did once use Freudian Slip as an insult.
