  1. So, whilst at the lake, my laptop decided its hard drive was gone. Not that it was much of a laptop to begin with, but a braindead laptop is nothing more than a paperweight. Time to buy a nice new hard drive, and grumble a bit about annoyingly inconvenient technology...

On HDDs, I have more issues earlier with Seagate too, though WDs have failed on me.  Most of my SDDs are Samsung, good luck so far.

    3. Melrick

      Melrick

I went for 20 years without a single HDD failure.  20 years.  I get SSDs and 3 failures in less than a year, all different brands, all top brands.  At least they were only used as starter drives so none of the important info was lost, which was just as well, because when SSDs fail, you rarely recover any data from them.  Still a pain in the arse though.  SSDs will get better and more reliable in time, but at the moment they’re far from ‘bullet proof’ or ‘fail safe’ like sales people keep trying to tell us.

I lose at least 2 HDD a decade and one took a good chunk of writing when I was doing parody more. I’d been thinking SSDs were better, but I never had anyone who could save files for me. I lost a 40k chunk as I didn’t know much on how to. I still miss that angsty story, but recreating it just did not flow. Guess I’ll stay with my HDD/cloud backup. Ineed to figure how to save my email boxes and custom dictionary.

CL… For what it’s worth, I agree with you both.

I’d be wary of underestimating him though. What Scotland’s experience shows is that he will do anything to change the facts on the ground to take away the argument. It doesn’t matter if he doesn’t keep his promise to the local authority, they can’t take back their planning permission and get the forest back. Hundreds of years of habitat gone forever. He’s an extremely aggressive individual. I think he won’t just make cuts in social services and social security, he’ll reclassify the whole thing for good, automatically locking large swathes of people out of governmental assistance, effectively destroying them as any kind of political force for protest, especially since the senate and the house of representatives are full of republicans too.

The first order of business is to see that ALL his interests are put into a proper blind trust, and not an entity controlled by his children, as he proposed. That is NOT a blind trust, and he knows it full well. It is a conflict of interest at the very least, and must not be permitted. All his business interests must be sequestered.

He will do what he wants.  White supremacists and hate won.  Yes, we need to be vigilant, but with his own party in control of all three branches, we’re screwed.

  3. It is Day 3000 of the nuclear winter, and I am preparing to go and stock up in advance of the coming Bomb Cyclone we are threatened with as of tonight.

      BronxWench

And we have her home. The neurologist told us we could do just as much for her at home, since she wasn’t on the IV meds at hospital, so we went and broke her out. She’s not quite herself, and she’s still having small focal seizures, but she’s glad to be home, and we’re so glad to have her back with us.

  7. It is 37 degrees Celsius out there. That’s 99 degrees Fahrenheit. (Otherwise known as really hot...)

Oh, @Melrick 59F isn’t chilly at all!  Then again, we are known for our extremes here. We routinely drop well below 0 degrees C in the winter, and sometimes even below 0 degrees F.

    3. Melrick

      Melrick

We can occasionally drop down to 0 overnight, but never ever during the day.  Some shit has gone seriously wrong if it ever did that.

Don’t worry, if it’s too cold, there’s a place near Antarctica called “Shag Island” (at 3C/37F), should be a good location … free plot bunny to anybody wanting it.

Might I suggest that next year, you go someplace more peaceful?  Say, downtown Detroit?  …. seriously, someplace calmer where there aren’t fireworks?  I know, you shouldn’t have to, but just to protect the family?

    3. BronxWench

      BronxWench

I don’t think it was the fireworks, really. I suspect it’s partly the hot weather, and partly an annual flare-up. When she was first diagnosed, it was right before the July 4 holiday, and we didn’t realize the phenobarbital we were administering orally wouldn’t build to a therapeutic level quickly enough. She started having clusters, and wound up nearly dying on us. Her last bad run of seizures, bad enough to put her in the hospital, was early September last year.

What I want is someone to tell me cannabis oil works for canine epilepsy, too, and I’ll be at that damned dispensary so fast, I’ll break the sound barrier.

    4. Anesor

      Anesor

Sorry it flared like this. We just can’t comfort them enough and they try to to return it too. I worry about ours getting something chronic like this.

Sorry about the blood tests, but I really, REALLY do not need my computer to act up today, nor do I need the aggravation of trying to deal with updates on a website when I can barely load the freaking website as it is, and getting a call from the daft one that he needs me to drive down and pick him up at MIDNIGHT tonight, because I don’t mind going to bed at 1am when I need to be up at 5:30am, and when he’s dragging me to a seminar/trade show/dinner thing tomorrow.

It is either the hard drive deciding to fail or it’s the router. I’m hoping it’s the router, because I can fix that in 5 minutes or less. The hard drive will take a little longer.

    3. Desiderius Price

      Desiderius Price

I’d backup the hard drive, just in case…. it could simply be time to reinstall.

    4. BronxWench

      BronxWench

I’ll replace the hard drive. Reinstalling is simply delaying the inevitable. In the meantime, I have the idiot laptop which has very little I can actually use, but….

  11. So.

My almost 81 year old mother is wobbly and not feeling top form because she has a sinus infection, but doesn’t want to take the nice antibiotics which will clear up said infection.

My YoungerSpawn is acting out at school and being generally a difficult young male creature, complicated by autism. We may, for the first time, require behavioral therapy.

My corgi was back in hospital with cluster seizures, and now has a second medication which makes her sleepy. We’re hoping she’ll adjust to the new med and come back to her sunny self, but the current flattening of her lively nature is heartbreaking.

I need it to be April 15, so I can open the lake house and go hide there for a solid week. Alone. With wine and coffee.

You are more of an expert than I will ever be. Only you can tell how serious it is. That’s not in doubt.

But, having said that, with all the other stresses this week, it’s hardly surprising you feel down.

And, also, those things will be adding to his stress, making it difficult to keep an even keel.

If he does need some therapy, is that such a bad thing? It is there to help, and it might just be the thing that helps him over this little bump in the road. I’ve actually heard some good things about DBT, and he might find some tools in that to help him in future.

    3. BronxWench

      BronxWench

Oh, I’m sure it will be fine, and he’ll do well with the therapy. I’m just feeling the stress of too much going on at once, and very little assistance from the rest of the alleged adults around here, all of whom need me for various things.

  12. I do not like winter storms, at all. I most certainly didn’t ask for 8 to 12 inches of snow, with strong winds and gusts up to forty miles an hour.

For our metric users, which is most of the world, this is 20 to 30 cm of snow, and wind gusts of 64 kph.

  13. As much as it pains me to ask this, if you’ve purchased books from Torquere Press, please don’t. They’ve stopped paying authors, editors, and cover artists. While we’re all trying to get our rights reverted back to us, our books are still listed for sale on Amazon, Torquere, Smashwords, Barnes & Noble, Google Play Books, and All Romance, to name a few. Check before you buy: if the publisher is Torquere, please don’t buy. We won’t get paid.

This is not simply a case of spending a week with its favorite mechanic. Oh, no. Seriously, it’s looking better and better. Everything I wanted to look at was gone, except for one car, which didn’t have a roof rack and smelled like something had died in it. With under 9,000 miles, it should NOT smell that bad unless the previous owner was a sweet little old serial killer who only dismembered victims on Sunday, after church services were ended… Yeah, I’ll pass on the dead person special.
