Trust me, I spent a long time working this out.

Well, when people read fanfics, they look at say... some Anime guy, and they think "Baby I'd like to be fucking him." Or that they'd like to be saving the day.

But the Mary Sue, she's too perfect to pretend for to be the reader. She's too fantastical, with her colour changing eyes and hair and bullshit. Too powerful. She lacks our flaws. We can't pretend she's us, and worse still, we know that she's somebody else's fantasy to fuck whoever.

So, we can't possibly be the ones fucking or saving or starring. It's somebody else who's the star, and we can't pretend they're us, or that they'll fall for us, because they've already fallen for somebody more perfect than we could ever be. In other words, we hate Mary Sue because we are JEALOUS of her. She makes us feel inadequate.

Example - sometimes I sit back and pretend that I (as a robot) can participate in my favorite show and am pairing up with the nearest hot guy. Everybody's welcome to their own fantasies. But I can't hook up with Prowl if he's already hooked up with some other OC - not just a regular OC with flaws who's deep and willing to learn, but something that's perfect, something I could never win the guy off, something I can't pretend is me, something I cannot measure up to.

Anti-Sues are similar - you know, those things so full of flaws but still adored? Well, this time Anti-Sue is loathesome - but she still gets the man. Why would a hot guy ever want to hook up with somebody so mentally disturbed? Why does she still get the spotlight?

The real problem with the Mary Sue is that usually the only person who can identify with her is the writer. Her personality, looks and perfection are just too hard for a reader to identify with. And we're jealous that she's got the man we wanted, that she's in the setting we want to see ourselves in, that she's perfect but we can't be. And why shouldn't we be? Mary Sue has everything we desire, but we could never have. The hot fantasy robot as a boyfriend, the good looks, the adoration - and though she's got a million friends, there's no way we would ever be friends with her because she's too freaking-ass self-centered. And on top of all that, all the important things in this world we once loved are now happening to her. True, in the story, she has to be deeply integrated, but she's always there, involving herself.

If I think of more, I'll add it, but that's a start to why we hate Mary Sue.

We are JEALOUS.

How do you think up good names for OCs? Things that roll off the tongue and don't sound Sueish?

Well, I have several methods of choice. They kinda seem to resemble how Marvel and DC villains are named.

First example: Nickname Breech Loader, Real Name Bridget Loranski.

Breech Loader is a type of gun. I was looking up gun types because my character was a mercenary. Then I realised I needed a real name for her. So I looked up baby names in an online dictionary. I picked deliberately one beginning with B that would sound boring; as boring as you can think of, like a granny knitting. For her last name I wanted something beginning with L. Loran came up, and then I added the suffix, 'ski', knowing that it isn't all that uncommon, and sounds a little... edgy.

I have other examples, but how do YOU pick a name for an Original Character?

Why Mary Sue Litmus Tests Suck

Yeah, most Mary Sue Litmus Tests do suck. No, not because I failed - even though I have, once or twice - but for better reasons than that.

I'll start with a Litmus Test made for universal testing. There are several of them, and this one uses tick-boxes.

First of all, it asks if my character is the same gender as me. That's stupid. There are only two genders to pick from - male or female. So to avoid ticking that box, you need to DELIBERATELY make your character the opposite gender. Seems kinda unfair when there's so little to choose from.

Then it asks if we're in the same general age group. Teenager, or Twenty-something. Another unfair question. I'd say most people here are teenagers, or mid twenties. Therefore you'll probably be fans of teen fiction. Therefore to fit in with the characters you're hanging with, you need to be a teenager. Besides, why shouldn't we write characters for our age group? Writing what we know, the character will be more believable.

Then it asks if we share a sexual identity. There are three main sexual identities - straight, gay and bi. Again, a limited choice. Again, we're writing what we know. Besides, if we're fucking a canon who's straight, that's sticking with canon. That's not fair at all.

Another question asks if I think readers will like and empathise with my character. Why shouldn't I want readers to like my character? If she's gonna be a villain that might change things, but why should I have to write a character who will be deliberately disliked by readers to avoid that point?

Oh yeah, and why can't I pretend to myself that I am my character? It's not something that takes place in the story; why do my private fantasies come into it?

Further on, the quiz asks about names. Whether they chose her name, or whether their name is a verb. Well, some fandoms involve such names. If the character doesn't have a verb for a name they might stand out. There's quite a few questions that don't take into account that I might be doing it because that's the way the fandom goes, and I'm not talking about all of them. But one question asks if my character is persecuted by an authority figure. Yeah, she is. It's Starscream. He's an ASSHOLE. It'd be more Sueish if she was insulting him and didn't get some persecution for it.

It asks if the character is a teenager. What the hell is wrong with that? Besides, there's already been a question about age. If I answered yes to that one, being a teenager, I'll get another point here.

It asks if she has a drug habit or similar. But it's not until a further question that it asks if she doesn't suffer consequences. The test has many questions like that, asking about consequences in a later question when they should be pooled.

In other words, this character I have invented to take part in an adventure must be completely different to me, right down to gender and sexual preferences, and not stand out in any way. In other words, totally boring. Now I know Mary Sue often stands out a mile and is everything you want to be, but she may well be taking part in an adventure that would technically REQUIRE her to have a special ability or two to SURVIVE. Too many skills make her unrealistic, but one or two make her interesting. The occasional coincidental similarity - gender, or sexual identity - is pretty irrellevant. And this test adds points for features that would normally make her more normal, not asking about consequences until later on.

I'll go on to a different test - for Transformer fiction, but regarding negative points.

First, it asks if the character has wings on her butt. First of all, that's stupid. Second of all, it knocks twenty points off the score and excuses you from the rest of the test.

Secondly, if the character becomes a Transformer because she wanted revenge on an ex, that's negative 100 points.

Thirdly, if the character comes about in the ordinary way, so ordinary that you don't even talk about it, thats'd negative thirty points. I'd have thought having an interesting (if not crazy) backstory was better for the character and the story, but no, it looks like you need to be perfectly normal and boring.

Fourth, it says that if the character swaps factions, and gets shot for it, that's negative fifty points. This is one I got to tick off.

Fifth, it asks if she suffers from a pathological phobia of clowns. That's negative twenty.

Sixth, it asks if she sings Don't Cry For Me Argentina in a loud, bellowing voice, which is negative ten. Does that mean to knock off a few points, my character HAS to sing, badly? And they have to sing that song? Why that song?

Seventh, it says that if your character comes lurching out of their coffin you can knock off twenty points, because the writer of the test would like to see that.

And that right there says why this test sucks ASS. It's not about Mary Sue. It's about what the writer would like to see. Furthermore, your character can have all sorts of Sueish powers and events, but a couple of the above factors - like getting a perfectly normal repercussion from Megatron for defecting, or mentioning a fear of clowns, or wings on your ass - knocks off a shitload of those points. Why? Why does doing stupid things in your story get points taken off? It doesn't make your character less of a Sue when they're still stunningly beautiful and packed with guilt for things they didn't do.

There's way too many Litmus Tests like that. But with a resulting -18 score, I'm not going to complain about it.

	Question!

Okay so there’s this place. Let’s just call it the ghetto. It’s pretty dangerous and filled with abject poverty and crime. And there’s a dude who gets paid by various rich people to go into this place and do various things for them. Usually just buying things for them on the black market or something that they can’t get elsewhere.

So what would you call him? What would his job title be? Errand boy seems too… I guess less specific? Like he’s not picking up dry cleaning or taking dogs for a walk. He gets paid a lot of money to go into this place no one else wants to go, to do somewhat menial things, but things that are important enough for someone to pay a fair amount for.

I’ve had him call himself a glorified errand boy, but that just doesn’t really hit the mark. And I’ve had other people call him a mercenary, but he’s not hired muscle. He doesn’t rough people up or intimidate anyone.

This forum looked so lonely. So… Let’s talk about creating flawed characters! Like I don’t mean “omg he’s so tortured it’s sexy” kinda flaw, I mean non-sexy flaws. Things that add a little bit of ugly to an otherwise attractive character. I personally think every character needs a little ugliness added, especially in smut fics (Not counting PWPs in this statement. Everything goes out the window for PWPs) where most of the main characters tend to be on the sizzling side.

I think lots of people have a line they draw in the sand between redeemable and not-redeemable. Like if your character is super sexy, but he keeps raping neighbourhood grandmothers, I probably won’t root for him no matter how many animal shelters he donates to or how many sonnets he writes. But there’s ugliness to me that is redeemable that isn’t so redeemable to other readers. Someone who kills, for example. (In fiction only!) Someone with explosive diarrhea (though I wouldn’t necessarily want to see him in an anal sex scene). Um… What else? Scars and stuff are too attractive, but horrific burns over half their body aren’t so much. A penchant for completely inappropriate jokes? Racism?

I have a character that refuses to pick a personality. At times he's strong and independant, flirty and flighty, or wishy washy and weak and there are even times (like in the same paragraph) that he'll be all three. I have no idea how to develop him and he's giving me a headache every time I sit down to write his parts of the story. I'm seriously thinking he may suffer from DID.

So any ideas on how to fix him or should I just let him be a little crazy and see if there's a reason he's how he is?

I get that every character an author writes has a bit of themselves or their mind embodied into the characters. My thing is I could be overthinking this topic. The 5-part series that I’m writing follows 5 different OCs interacting with their respective pairing in the anime adaption of Saiyuki with all 5 OCs loosely crossing over into each other’s stories. The first story was a piece of cake, aside from a long writing hiatus. The second one is coming along nicely although I think I’m trying to do too much in a short period of time. Stories 3 and 4 have a general basic outline of each OC along with a general foundation of how those stories will play out. I’m not really a writer so this has been quite the learning journey for me, but I’ve noticed I’ve come to really know a character as I feel them out in the scenes while trying not to make them Mary Sues (a term I just came across since hopping on the forums haha).

Stop rambling! Okay, so the meat of this question: each OC is basically the alter ego of a friend in my circle. The 5th OC, however, is my own alter ego and I am stumped as to who she is. So how do you write an embodiment of yourself as an OC if you’re not sure where to go with it? Tips or suggestions? I found that if I write down the strengths and weaknesses of a character, what makes them unique, their struggles, while some of that may still be in the story, the rest is completely out the window as I watch them interact with their environment, or as they approach a situation differently (if any of that makes sense).

I kind of have an idea about her character, but since her story will be the last I write, I haven’t put a whole lot of thought into it. I just gave her a race, a title, and a bit of an attitude but nothing too sassy. In my mind, because I don’t have much of a background for her or even an idea of how she will grow as she interacts with her respective pairing in the story, I’m afraid she may be a Mary Sue. All 4 stories, I know exactly how everything is going to play out and exactly what sort of rating to give each story but for her, because she is supposed to be my own alter ego, I see nothing. (I spent most of my early years having my alter ego be a magical girl in the Sailor Moon universe so this is new territory haha.) Perhaps I should just wait until it’s her time. So why would this be important now? I’m just not wanting to go through 4 stories and then when it’s time for story 5, if I write somewhere that she vaguely appears in another story or the other OCs recognize her from centuries ago in a previous life, I want to make sure it all fits when writing story 5 so it sounds authentic and natural. Not just random like: “oh, yeah, btw, us 4 OC’s know you too! What a coincidence lolz”. I’d like to just barely hint at her before her story.

So I have an idea for a world that combines world history (pre-gunpowder age), mythology and fantasy (not 100%)

I think I have all the classes for main warrior types, Knights, Samurai, Spartan etc that are 90% male and some that can be either gender, but I would like a few female only class of warrior.

So far I have the Valkyrie, Amazon and Bushi (female Samurai) but I feel that there could be much more. I could just create some off the top of my head, but if anyone has any I could add to my list, it would be really appreciated.

How much time do you spend trying to create the Perfect Woman? She's brilliant, passionate and the life of the party. She can cook, clean, raise children and hold down a job with no problem. There's nothing she can't do.

It's a great thing to dream about but there's a problem – no one, even characters, are perfect. In any movie or novel you read, there is always some obstacle that the heroine has to overcome and these barriers allow the reader to connect emotionally to your character. If you start out with a perfect character then there's no place for them to grow with the reader. There isn't anything compelling them to follow your story and character, wanting to know what will happen next or will she be okay. That doesn't mean she has to have gone through some horrible situation but small problems can mount up, so keep that in mind.

Regardless of the genre there are eight basic heroines.

The Boss is a take charge woman. She demands respect and her goals are her most important things in life. She doesn't accept failure and she won't give up. She's a workaholic, confident, competitive, arrogant, and her attitude must be consistent with her behavior. Imagine how she would act in a situation – I use key words like the ones listed in the previous sentence.

Examples: Working girl climbing a corporate ladder, a pampered princess. Katharine Hepburn is a good example. She's played many 'boss archetypes' (Eleanor of Aquitaine in The Lion in Winter).

The Survivor is mysterious, manipulative and has many charms. She's street smart and her intelligence is always hiding behind a seductive smile but she always keeps her wits. She hides a very strong streak of distrust in anyone and it's second nature to size up everyone in a room the minute she enters. Cynicism guides her every action. Her survival instincts gives her the means to do whatever is necessary to come out ahead. She skates on thin ice and may seem more of a villainess than heroine. Eventually a hero comes who is able to see through the wall she built around herself.

Examples: Margaret Mitchell, who crafted the icon of a Survivor through Scarlett O'Hara in Gone With the Wind, Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct, Madonna in Evita, or Bette Davis in just about anything.

The Spunky Kid is funny, supportive, reliable, the All-American Girl. She's not looking to be at the top, just in her own little niche. She's the team player, always ready to lend a hand. She maybe a cheerleader but never captain. She doesn't have any enemies and plenty of friends. Her humor helps her through the bumps of her love life, "ever the bridesmaid" ring a bell? She's more comfortable to hang around the guys than dress up. She never runs away and can forget the differences between her and the hero if it can stop an escalating situation. She also worries for others more than herself.

Examples: Meg Ryan in Sleepless in Seattle, Melanie Griffith in Working Girl, and Janine Garofalo in The Truth About Cats & Dogs.

The Free Spirit is "original", playful, fun loving, acts on a whim and follows her heart, and not head. She sets trends and is always looking for new experiences. She travels through life with a hop, skip and jump always stopping to smell the flowers and admire the colors. She can be a little ditzy but is sincere and willing to help. She scoffs at danger and resists any effort to be pulled to safety, enjoying the excitement and would be high from the adrenaline rush.

Examples: Lucille Ball, Goldie Hawn, Jenna Elfman from Dharma & Greg, and Calista Flockhart in Ally McBeal. These women share sincerity and imagination, with a strong sprinkling of an impulsive need to meddle in their friends' lives.

The Waif is the original damsel in distress. Think Cinderella, Sleepy Beauty, Rapunzel. Her innocence evokes a protective urge from the hero. She has a tremendous amount of will and will endure instead of fighting back. She's pure at heart, too trusting and insecure. She seems untouched by the harshness of the world and is patient and adaptable to any situation. She'll carry on looking for the day she will be free of her suffering but takes little action to bring herself closer to that day. If she's cornered, she will take desperate measures when there is no other option.

Examples: Marilyn Monroe in The Misfits and La Femme Nikita (I guess I could see Nikita as a waif in the beginning).

The Librarian is prim and proper but has a passionate side. She's learned to lead with her brain and not her body. She doesn't wear revealing clothes and always has an answer, which can make her quite stubborn to others opinions. She's serious, efficient, and may have to overcome feelings of inadequacy. She's prefers a well-reason debate to settle differences, is practical and takes a moment to study the situation, trying to find the easiest way to safety. She can take care of herself but wouldn't turn a man down.

Examples: Shelly Long in Cheers, Shirley Jones in The Music Man, (wonderful movie), Ellen Barkin in The Big Easy.

The Crusader is a modern heroine who doesn't scream in fear. She's not a damsel in distress. She has a mission and marches over anyone in her way. This woman is headstrong, tenacious, keeps her eyes on the goal and brushes off any opposition. You can't calm her down or force her to do anything and she doesn't need to be protected. If you aren't helping her, then you're in her way – or even an enemy. So if she has to save or protect something, she's a crusader.

Examples: Sarah Michelle Gellar in Buffy, Lucy Lawless in Xena, Wonder Woman, BatGirl, Supergirl.

The Nurturer is not always Suzy Homemaker but she takes care of everyone else. She listens, is happy to see you, serene, capable, optimistic, calm, cool, collected and always has the answers. Her role is to take care of family and friends so anyone can depend on her.

Examples: Julie Andrews who played Mary Poppins and Gabrielle from Xena.

(Will eventually post the Eight Male Archetypes.)

Hey there! I just thought about sharing my views on Original Characters with you people. Go ahead, answer the poll and post a comment while you're at it!

Concerning OCs, I strongly prefer them to play minor or supporting roles in the story, and I just dont like the idea of an OC being the main character of a fic (unless of course, the story isn't really fanfiction, but original fiction, which would make both the characters and everything in the story pretty much... well, original).

I am currently working on a Naruto fic centering around Shikamaru, and I included an OC in the story... First of all, I'm not too sure I did a good job with it (I dedicated a whole chapter to developing the character, telling his story, his motivation and details about his life, but I got a few concrits telling me I was "lingering too long on things that don't matter too greatly to the plot". They may have had a point, so I trashed that chapter and I'm re-writing it), and second of all, eehhh... I forgot what I was going to say. Damn attention disorder! Ok, I'll post again if I manage to remember what I wanted to say.

Mary Sue How-to

I wrote this several years ago on LJ. *amuses herself way too much* I thought it might be helpful for people worried about writing a Sue or anyone who just wants a little chuckle.

How to be a Mary Sue by Jezebel Haddo

Have you always wanted to write a Mary Sue character but weren't sure how? Now you can with these 15 easy steps!

1. Prattle endlessly about their hair - Hair is the most important aspect of a person. How can we understand a character if we don't know every minute detail about their hairstyle?

2. Give your character at least two nicknames. It makes them seem more interesting that way.

3. They should be drop-dead sexy. Even if they have traits that are not commonly thought of as sexy, they should have multiple people falling in love with them for no good reason. Only evil and/ or stupid characters should be ugly and/ or fat. Cool characters should be gorgeous or at least ruggedly handsome.

4. Don't waste time developing their personality. All you need to write is that they're a cute, smart, sassy, fun-loving, badass rebel who's good at everything and is popular with the in-crowd. That makes it true to life.

5. Don't give them discernible flaws. Your character will be much cooler if they come across as more god than human.

6. Put an emphasis on music, sports, and dating. The best characters are always listening to hip rock bands, are their team's MVP, and have lots of people falling for them (though they only date equally cool people). That's what life is all about!

7. The rules of any established universe should bend for your character's awesomeness. If anyone complains, they're jealous. Laws and consequences are for losers.

8. Why not make your character a twin? Twins are really common! Every twin has at least one twin.

9. Your character has the right to treat everyone else like scum and still have said scum love and worship them. Hey, how can anyone not love their coolness?

10. If it's a girl, make her super-skinny, yet super-buxom. What's the point of having a nice rack and an incredible arse if she isn't thirty pounds underweight? And we all know that's how most girls are built. If it's a boy, he must be ripped, with a six-pack stomach and bulging biceps, but he's not too muscular, of course.

11. Employ a deus ex machina whenever possible. It's the fun way to solve problems.

12. Make blanket statements with nothing to back them up. If you say your character is friendly, I'll take your word for it, even if they never do anything to show that they're friendly.

13. Oxymorons, stereotypes, and anachronisms are your friends. Just because your character goes to Hogwarts doesn't mean they can't be immersed in Muggle pop culture. A Chinese character doesn't have to be at all Chinese as long as they're named Lee or Wong and they like egg rolls. And just because grunge rock came about in the 90's, doesn't mean someone in the 70's couldn't be listening to it.

14. It's okay to give your character rare abilities, famous relatives/friends/lovers, and a high profile job. While you're at it, why not several of each?

15. Make sure they've experienced lots of trauma, but don't bother showing them actually being affected by it. You don't want the character's coolness being watered down by things like human psychology. Emotions are only good for eliciting sympathy. As long as the character whines about the bad stuff, it will seem authentic.

Upon seeing so much Sue/Stu fear questions listed under Character development, I 'll offer to share a professional author's series of crib sheets with everyone. If that is something people wish to see, please let me know. I have a series of worksheets that are broken into different segments including a psychology test to define the flaws and strengths to get a consistent characterization upon which a writer can safely rely for writing any story that contains Original Characters. These are fairly in depth detail oriented, and one is a personality targeting questionnaire.

I will warn everyone that it is 2 documents, and some parts overlap between the two. The redundant sectors are meant for consistency building. So, if I receive any feedback that is positive I will gladly share these specific worksheets. I have used them for several years with exceptional results..

Trigger warning for abused people:

I got no idea where else to ask this, so bear with me:

Hypothetical senario:

A women escapes after being systematically abused for years as a sex slave to a particular "master"

Learns self defense and how to properly defend herself

If she is then put into a vulnerable position with her former abuser, is it possible for the women to mentally revert back to her abused self, foregoing any attempt at fighting back?

A woman who comes off as strong and capable, but a hidden past of being abused, is suprised by her former abuser and suddenly can't fight back and reverts mentally back to her abused self.

Is this probably/likely? From what I understand yes, but I want confirmation besides my own understanding. This is for a character that I am writing.

This November I am writing a novel for NaNoWriMo. The basic plot is there are rips in Time and Space and the only one who can help heal them is an utterly average, and common human. I have looked up statistics and figures on the most common names, family style, university major, etc. Business Management Major is the most common. But there is nothing about what the average Business major likes to do. So if you are, will be, or were a Business Major in College (ages 16 and up) could you please fill out my survey and base certain answers on what you liked during college (or present if you haven’t gone to college yet). Any personal questions about religion, etc. are only in there so if I can see if certain beliefs and thoughts are more common to business majors. For example: My Character’s parents are from Generation X (born between 1991 or 1965 (depending on who out talk to) to 1981) which statistically mean that they had a strict religious up bring and when they got older they let up on that. So I want to combine that statistic with the most common ideology of Business Majors that I can find. Thank you and please return this to me before 01.November. 2013, when possible. The questions will become more specific to my novel at the end. If there is anything else you think that I should know pleases feel free to add it or if you don’t want to answer something that is cool too. Thanks!

The title of the fic will be "___ ____ and the Enchanted Wood". The character who I'm having trouble naming is part-Veela, but unrelated to Fleur Delacour, is very adept at magic, and has been known to be rather promiscuous around school. She's in her 3rd year at Hogwarts along with her friends and is in the house of Ravenclaw. She has two friends, one named Miles Plymouth who is in Hufflepuff and is a muggle-born, and another named Alexis Vandeleur who is in Ravenclaw and a pure-blood from a very famous wizarding family, though she tells people she's a muggle-born because she hates her family's high status.
I have four options that I like for the main character's name, which are in the attached poll. Please help me out here, because I'm very excited about this fic and want to start on it ASAP.

Ramblings on OC's..ish

First off, I know there are litmus tests for them, but I see most of them a little on the elitist side..

Having said that, what general criteria are OC's judged by, for you regulars?

Second, self insertion, since I didn't find any topics on it.

I only skimmed..

What's the general opinion on it, as far as pure SI (read: little to no so-called "self editing") and semi SI (there's a fine line between SI and an OC that is a partial clone of yourself, but I'm too lazy to investigate it..)?

Edit:

This post has been nagging me ever since I posted it, and it seems to be born from an idea I've been rolling around for several months.

I realize that most, if not all OC's are based on their creator in one way or another, be it desired attributes or actual ones.

The idea in question is something along the lines of an OC that is based on myself (in mannerisms, actions, and a little amplifying of some less dominant personality traits only) showing up in the Teen Titans universe and nearly ripping the team apart, so to speak.

What say you guys on this?

Name: Toshi Morino (I used Japanese names only for the reason of not having a Sam standing next to a Shikamaru... Would be strange to have terribly different names)

Naruto Fandom

Height/Weight: 5'4", 130 pounds (That's a little stocky, if you don't know... I'm 5'5", 140, so I used a reference to something I knew)

Background:

Part of an elite organization in a village called the "Storm Cloud", he was among 4 other members who specialized in one individual change of nature. The idea was drawn up by mastermind Sojio, who believed in a little known myth of the hunters, who came before ninja. (They would turn out to be a decedent of samurai legend). He got this idea from stumbling upon a shrine in his expedition with ancient scrolls describing the purpose of the hunters, and their strengths. With all the traditions described in the scrolls, he became obsessed with trying to recreate these people. The issue was, each possessed an ocular based jutsu that wasn't apart of any bloodlines in the ninja world, thus samurai. He went to find Orochimaru, who at the time was still short-funded, and for a hefty price, attempted to summon long-dead spirits into babies. This was as he was developing his reanimation jutsu. After hundreds of attempts from children stole around the thunder's territory, he was finally able to produce 4 babies with the different elements bound into them.

Orochimaru refused to create the last child unless Sojio would pay double what he did for the other four. It took him 4 years to finally create the funds and satisfy Orochimaru. The last one was Toshi, and so he was raised having the others as five older brothers.

Sojio attempted to father the five, but he also was the leader of his village, and he was still a little crazy. He was paranoid and feared everyone around him would sell him out to the actual Cloud, or would try to take away his position. No one was allowed to leave the Storm Cloud village. Because of his fear, he tortured. One the kids would turn seven, until their 15th birthday, he would torture them everyday. (Pulling an idea from George Orwell), eventually the hunters saw it as necessary and found they'd come to accept this punishment. It would kill off emotion and pain better than anbu training and make perfect slaves for Sojio's own control. As a reward, at their 15th birthday, they'd be introduced to the community's Spring Pool, a coverup for a whorehouse that only ninja have access to.

Toshi went through the same process, but was younger than the others and so was unable to join their squad, a squad of four plus a leader. Instead, he was entered into a basic academy where he'd be hidden away as the last hunter. Sojio decided to follow the third Hokage's example, and tried to coach the team that Toshi would enter into. Toshi felt it to be the greatest honor of his life, but unfortunately, the other two on the team were introduced to the torturing of Genins, which had long become an acceptable practice to keep ninja loyal to the Storm Cloud. They go on missions with Toshi, but never complete anything, since he refuses to let them kill. He doesn't feel bad for them but doesn't want them to deal with the missions that the storm cloud completes, the Storm's Wraith missions, which generally involve assassinating turn tails or bringing them back so they can be tortured and then killed.

Eventually, the two with Toshi plan to escape. It takes a while for them to talk Toshi into it (2.5 years), as even for as smart as he is, he can't see the Storm Cloud as a criminal organization. But, they do eventually leave... You get the idea of what probably happens next.

Unique features:

Toshi is a simple figure, short and not physically strong by any measure. He has ragged brown hair that he trims as short as possible, but it's rarely seen under his cloak. He feels that his best feature is his stormy grey-blue eyes, since he enjoys having an attribute that he could relate to the village. His face is unscathed by any torturing, and he feels that "Sojio's kindness always prevailed while he taught me a lesson". He assumes this to be the reason he has no scars on his face. Under his cloak, he carries multiple headbans, it was once his way of taking trophies. For every target he killed, he'd take their headban and tie it around his arm. He only carried 10 out of the storm village.

Toshi would wear his cloak in a volcano, even as heavy as it is. Given to him by Sojio for his graduation into the ninja academy, it is grey with a light camouflaged pattern on it, allowing him to almost disappear if he stands still. It is chakra infused to avoid detection, picking up the same frequency as objects around him. Everything he owns from Sojio, he still treasures, even though at times he talks bad of him. He feels split on whether he should return and beg forgiveness or accept his new life.

Toshi grows out his beard because he tries to model another role model who isn't mentioned much in the story. He refers to the guy occasionally as the "Old Man". He keeps a journal given to him by this man which he writes in constantly. It's a special journal with the ability to allow Toshi to talk and have his memories stored.

Toshi's a book worm. Not much to it, he insisted on stealing books and sealing them in scrolls as they left so he could learn or simply waste time reading.

Out of habit, Toshi constantly pulls his hood forward to attempt to cover any emotions, including humor. He tries to continue his Storm Cloud demeanor, even though he's a traitor. Sometimes, he gets extremely angry at his two partners for making him a traitor.

Relation to other Cannon characters:

Hinata: Toshi allowed his group to go to the Village hidden in the leaves for two reasons: The Chuunin exams and to topple the village. He figured that if he could crash the village himself, he'd be able to regain Sojio's trust. But, upon deciding to buy property to use as a base, one of his squad mates gets in trouble. Being brought to the attention of Tsunade that they owned property in her village, she states that all ninja who have land in her village would be required to fulfill missions for her. The mission she entitles Toshi, Kiba and Shizune to was a rescue mission for Hinata, Sai and Shino. Tsunade has no choice, being short on spare members for the Chuunin exams. It wasn't her year to take them, but the Thunder was having "bandit problems" (or issues with the Storm Cloud meddling).

When he sees what's been done to Hinata, Toshi finally has a change of heart. It is a shock to see what he had been doing to people for years, and, aided by Kiba's complete rage at how she had been treated, he officially turns his back on the storm cloud. Unfortunately, it is discovered that he was apart of the group that abducted her. His four older brothers rat him to Shizune, who eventually would tell Tsunade.

Weaknesses, Bad Habits

Toshi is completely indecisive for a long time when it comes to the Storm Village. Although bright, he can never allow himself to completely love the Storm village or turn his back to his home. He goes so far as to completely disguise himself among his friends and lie to them about his true feelings.

Toshi would be considered a support on any squad. He was always insulted for not even possessing the basic ability to throw a kunai knife straight, let alone hit a target. Try as he might, the only weapon Toshi can feasibly use is his bow and a dagger he would eventually steal.

Toshi is paranoid. Someone is always onto his plot. Years of being with Sojio rubbed off on him, he can't stand others and worries that if he slips up, he'll be ratted instantly and killed. For this reason, he always muttered to himself, and so he now is trying to forcefully stop this habit. This generally involves pinching his tongue.

For the longest time, Toshi worries that Shikamaru knows something about him. He things Shikamaru is way too smart for his own good. On his first day, Shikamaru beats Toshi at chess, Toshi's best game, three times in a row. His plotting against Shikamaru almost causes him to get caught, as Shikamaru never suspected anything of Toshi.

Toshi spaces out. Unfortunately, this generally happens when he's writing in his journal. He worries that someone will see what he's writing. Not only does he feel it's private information, Toshi feels the information in his journal could get him killed.

Toshi doesn't sleep well. Due to paranoia and being a light sleeper, he wakes on every creak in the current area he's in. This results in him not being as good a desicion maker if he has a particullarly bad night of sleep.

Toshi's anger is really violent with those around him. Occasionally, Toshi will end up yelling at the girl in his squad for something stupid and completely destroy her emotional security for a while.

Toshi fears himself, he fears what he can become, would become and could become. Eventually, the stress becomes too much, and he completely secludes himself from those around him. He sometimes can become a tyrant in his squad, but genereally leaves when that happens.

Toshi thinks he sees ghosts.

Strengths, skills

Toshi is incredibly smart if he has time to think. He's not impulsive when he's rational. He is very good with the bow he carries, and is crafty, having made the bow himself. The bow was designed with tricks that he implemented.

Toshi is a good cook, he has cooked for every mission he's been on and all the time they were away. He hunts for food, so rarely does his squad have a meatless meal.

I can see some issues, mainly the fact that his ideas are generally downtrodden, but I've always wanted to build a character based on paranoia. Power and insecurity seemed the best way to do so.

I have the character profiled, but I need a name. She is a fairly typical midwestern girl, German Scotts-Irish, Interested in ball room dance, Theater, and fashion. Kinda old fashioned morals and opinions, which aleinates many potential maybe-more-than-friends of the opposite gender, but greatly endears her to Steve Rogers (it is a Captain America fic set after Avengers). Her history of rejection leads to shyness, which leads to confusion and french-farceish misunderstandings in her relationship with Steve. I'm aiming for a fairly average person here, with a few quirks, and maybe one deep secret, just like real people. I have it narrowed down to the names in the poll, but any other advice is welcome.

If anyone wants to read the fic before voting, it is in Marvel'verse>Marvel Movies>Avengers> Secret Bit of Right from Wrong
