Snape is a teacher (I believe?) and gay but he is convinced to take on a wife. Enter Harry; Petunia had held out to the world that Harry was a girl (but I think in the story McGonagall knew and that’s why she suggested Harry to Snape). Snape and Harry didn’t sleep together for a very long time so Snape didn’t find out.
