Under-appreciated stories

@sweetmamajama yeah crawling within is the one with which I got the most criticism. Much of it was valid criticism, of course. But that is easily my favorite story that I've written.

@mastershakeme I'm glad you came back. Whenever you start to doubt your writing talk to me and I'll remind you how fucking awesome you are. It takes mad confidence of proportions I have never witnessed to be a happy writer without a support system of other writers going through similar trials. I have always had that support, and I still have had my fair share of melt downs where I took down stories and debated deleting my account. We got your back hun.

Well, little late to this party…  RL gets in the way, leave for a bit, and everyone throws a party…

I can’t really say there’s one that I’m feeling under-appreciated for after reading all the comments…  One, two, three reviews…  And here I was feeling like mine were bad at eight reviews.  I have my loyal fans and readers that have assisted with those reviews, which is why they feel under appreciated.  Blood and Honour, which I feel is one of my better works, has eight (tied with Come Hell or High Water), scored over 1300 views (whereas CHHW has just under 700)…  That said, half of those are from two loyal readers (two whom a big thanks goes out to them)…  CHHW, most of those, I think half again, are from one…  So, it does feel a little under-appreciated…

(Yes, throw the chairs now...)

MSM:
I know how it feels.  It’s thanks a lot to the support here and from CR that I’ve stayed here and kept posting up (even through long a long hiatus, Sahara desert length breaks, of reviews and views.  Like CR said, come talk to me when you feel like leaving…

I’m not a writer, but I will tell you as a reader, that I’ve noticed that often the underappreciated stories are the superior works.  I don’t get that at all.  Meaning I don’t get WHY the better works aren’t as appreciated as they SHOULD be.

Well I imagine most people do come to the site for masturbatory purposes more than narrative.

Actually, the stories I refer to often have very LITTLE sex or erotic content.  And yes, we do have those on here.  Very well written stories, whether short or long, that grab a reader’s imagination.

Like any good paradox, both are true. Erotic stories draw quicker attention, but less so can gather longer, thoughtful comments.

Y’ain’t most people though.  The forums are going to be biased towards narrative because largely it’s creators who would have an interest in coming here and avid readers other than that.  I’d think that forum users are a very tiny tiny tiny percentage of the main site traffic and we’re going to naturally have an interest in narrative more so than the majority of people frequenting the site.

Yeah that’s likely pretty true I think.

I’ve tried writing fics for that, a PWP, but typically I find a PWP is really just a pseudonym for a plot bunny breeding ground.

What I think is really interesting about this topic, is the ‘real world’ application. I’m posting to 3 sites including this one, but the audience is SO DRAMATICALLY different on every one of them… Yeah, I know. Genius observation. Are you guys really against cross posting? I’m being really secretive about it and not mentioning it to readers, but I just thought I’d share with ya’ll, since I do feel slightly underappreciated as well over here. I was looking for my audience though and I think I have a better idea now that I was able to connect with some other readers offsite.

Also, I didn’t know this site hosted mostly PORN… I go to asstr and BDSMlibrary for that junk!!! And I search for the specific kink, scroll through anything that looks like plot, get my rocks off and then I close EVERYTHING! So nobody will ever KNOW!!! Lol. Strangely enough, absolutely NONE of my true kinks have made it into my writing. IDK, honestly, I can’t write the stuff I kink on and I’m not not gonna try, because do porn authors have a following? Yes, I guess they do. Have I ever envied that? No. Have I ever wanted to write a story, only to find out people are doing Ctrl + F to find the parts they wanna jerk too? Naw.

I’m a queen of long story and plot, lots of fluff and cute, emotionally damaged boys finding comfort together… Did anyone say Yaoi? I don’t get off as intently to my plot and romance, as I do the crazy kinky PWP, but mine does include sex and the characters having sex feels like real people going through real issues. To me, that’s a lot more important to me than my 20 minutes on BDSMlibrary.

I cross posted a story on multiple sites at the same time, to get some idea as to which had an audience that liked my. As I do longer stories too, the crosspostiong became a real burden. It took me something like a dozen chapters before I got the process streamlined down to about 3 hours to do all the posting.  Each site had strengths and weaknesses, but I reduced the number for the next story. I reduced it more after a period of block and blues at lack of reactions. I’ve done an occasional prompt here, but my stuff’s lack of steam doesn’t get much attention. Now, I collect my original prompt length stories for sale as collections… which I plan to resume in about August. (gotta kill off two fics first)

It’s not porn… it’s adult themed erotica.  Huge difference!  </sarcasm>

Posting your stories to other websites is fine, other authors do that.     What they don’t like here are plagerists, spammers, under aged wizards, and things mentioned in the ToS.   Look at the warning tags, the only subject topics actually forbidden are real-people-under-18 and where the original author has explicitly stated “no fanfiction allowed”.   That, alone, causes some self-appointed morality warriors to have problems, therefore, the staff/moderators here have to be very diligent in enforcing those ToS.  ( DG/BW/etc can give you tales of what they’ve had to put up with.)  Every fanfic/story website I’ve examined, when I look at their ToS, are generally more restrictive than AFF when it comes to content.

DG/BW, correct me if I’m wrong, I think you can put links in your profile to the other websites, which can help them sort out what’s legitimate if they ever get a complaint about a possible dupe.

Hmm… “emotionally damaged boys” … me thinks you’ll enjoy my stories.

Yeah, I forgot to mention that you should find some way of indicating that you are crossposting. It would be very embarrassing to get a Hall of Shame warning when crossposting. (I used the same account name for each site, and they were the same day more or less...)

Hey thanks for the tip on posting links. I always wondered when … Also, I discussed this on FB with some other members here and they said the exact same thing about the restrictions of other sites. I guess I’m lucky I feel no desire to write weird fics because my fiction is accepted across the board… As long as i give proper ratings :P It’s very interesting to hear other’s perspectives… Thanks for your input

ok!! OMG! i just thought i’d get a private message when it came up. I’ll look at the rules again later… I simply thought i’d get in trouble for advertizing other sites.

I’m so PARANOID NOW!!!

When in doubt, send an email to the mods, let them know what’s up or ask a question, and they’ll pin it to their internal board if necessary.   Like I said, it’s common, they even have a story tag for the opposite (AFFO for AFF only).

A lot of sites have terms forbidding minor1/minor2 … whether it’s enforced, that’s a different issue.

The nice thing here is I’ve gotten answers when I’ve asked the mods questions, humanly fast, and it’s generally positive when it’s a reasonable thing.  (Like an overlap when two separate stories share a common bit of plot because the stories are tied together.)  I’ve heard horror stories about another site (that won’t be mentioned here) with seemingly schizophrenic moderator actions.

Have you ever written a story that you’re particularly proud of but ended up receiving little attention from anyone?  Perhaps it got very few, if any, reviews.  Mine is probably a story called Ripples.  I tried to make it feel as much like a Stephen King story as I could manage, and I’m pretty pleased with how it turned out.  It only got the 1 review.  My stories never get too many more than that normally anyway, but I always wished it had got appreciated more.  Maybe my pride in the story has caused me to be particularly biased towards it, and therefore can’t see it for the average story it really is.  Do you know why your story didn’t get much attention, or is it a puzzle to you?

Why not include links?

I’m always looking for something to read and sometimes all you need is a little promotion.
