¡Bienvenidos and welcome to The Invasion of Ian (IofI) random info/discussion forum topic!

I have a few lists and things I'd like to elaborate on here. There is a link to my Spotify playlist that will be regularly updated, some general story info, and review responses. I'll be updating this as time allows. I have a book that I'm writing for real life monetary compensation that I have to get done. Also, I spend probably way too much time researching music refs and writing/editing so please be patient. If you have any questions about this story, I'm ready and willing to answer them. I like feedback on my writing so feel free to post anything you feel like, even if it's totally random.

Music:

You can find all the music referenced in this story in a variety of places online. The vast majority are on Spotify, a free music app that syncs with Facebook. The rest are on Soundcloud or the Hype Machine (which has an app for Spotify). When I write, edit, and re-read my stories, I create a Spotify playlist and listen to it to get me in the mood (no pun intended).

You can now access my public Spotify account and IofI playlist! I hope that makes it easier for y'all to listen to the IofI soundtrack. It's also much easier for me to update, so it's not an entirely altruistic endeavor on my part :).

I also posted it at Share My Playlists.

General Story Background:

IofI is the second and my least personal favorite story written for AFF. It's very loosely based on the experiences of Felipe Guaman Poma de Ayala and Incans living under the tyrannical rule of Portuguese Catholics in Peru. He wrote Felipe Guaman Poma de Ayala: El primer nueva corónica y buen gobierno (or simply, the Guaman Poma, pub. 1615).

I dislike this story because of its morbidity, violence, and the rape elements. Why did I write it? I have been raped and know many women who have similar experiences, and this story serves as a way to talk about those experiences without going into specifics and engaging in online feminist warfare. I feel like it is important to speak out about domestic violence, rape and pedophilia, rather than let that kind of thing fester. This story is both triggering and cathartic for me to write. I'm not ashamed to admit to what I've gone through, because the world needs to know that women and men will not and should not be silent about sexual assault and domestic violence.

There are also a ton of allegories that I am alluding to in this story, including but not limited to:

  • American enslavement of Africans and Native Americans
  • Sex work in Latin America (men and women prostitutes who cater to European and North American tourists because there is no other work available to them)
  • Patriarchy and male chauvinism
  • The invasion of European Catholics in Mesoamerica - abuses by Catholic priests especially, and the ongoing treatment of Native peoples by Criollos and Mestizos, etc.
  • Globalization and the ways humans are destroying the Earth in an unsustainable manner
  • Racism, xenophobia, homophobia, etc. in current society
  • Manufacturing inequalities, etc. in China and third world countries
  • Violence in Africa, especially in terms of mining cell phone minerals in the Congo

I try to add elements of humor in order to even out the sad parts in the story. I prefer to read erotica that is funny rather than only romantic.

Guide to Character and Place Names:

Note – Squids have no surnames, because each emits a signature brain wave recognizable to any of their species.

Adaira Imamura: Ian’s mother. Adaira is a Scottish female forename meaning “successful spear warrior”; the feminine form of Adair (Adair is a surname as well). If you recall, Ian mentioned that Adaira was a strong-willed woman. Imamura is a Japanese surname meaning “new village”. In this case, Ian’s family creates a “new village” in an alien environment.

Atharax: A frozen oceanic planet where a super-intelligent, telepathic alien species humans refer to as “squids” live. Atharax is a name derived from anthrax, a lethal bacterial disease (i.e., the planet itself is a plague to humanity). The nature of the planet was inspired by Dante’s Inferno (Italian for “hell”), part of his Divine Comedy; and the mythical Aztec (Méxica) underworld called Mictlan.

Baltazon: The head slave master of the cattle slave pens. Baltazon is derived from the name of the demon Baltazo, an incubus legendary for his powers of seduction, who is said to have possessed a French woman in 1566.

Cluizela: Ian’s hybrid squid-human daughter, and the name of Meléx’s mother. Cluizela is a name derived from a combination of the French surname Cluizel (made famous by the world-renowned chocolatier Michel Cluizel) and the Italian surname Lizella. Ian’s daughter has a “sweet” nature, like the chocolate that M. Cluizel makes.

Czadkial: An adult squid, and Suli’s elder half-brother. Czadkial is derived from a combination of the word czar and the archangel named Zadkiel, which means “righteousness of God” in Hebrew. He was the archangel of benevolence, freedom, and mercy. Some believe that he was the angel who held back Abraham's hand to prevent him from sacrificing his son Isaac in the land of Moriah. Czar is the Russian word for male monarch/emperor or a person of great power. The character Czadkial stops Suli from killing his mate, Yuki.

Hoshimi Imamura: Ian’s elder sister. Hoshimi is a Japanese female forename meaning “starlight” (i.e., she dies among the stars in outer space).

Ian Imamura: An 19-year-old man (as of Ch. 20) abducted by squids from Atlanta, Georgia in June 2012. He is also a life-mate to the squid Prince Meléx. Ian is a Hebrew and Scottish male forename meaning “God is forgiving” (i.e., God forgives Ian for being an atheist and waging war on the squids).

Ichiro: Malcolm and Sàbehl’s hybrid squid-human son. Ichiro is a Japanese male forename meaning “first son”; Ichiro is Malcolm’s first child. The character Ichiro names himself after his great-grandfather Ichiro Imamura, father to Shinobu.

Jacob (Jake) François Chrétien: A 14-year-old boy of Louisianan Creole ancestry abducted by squids from Atlanta, Georgia in November 2012; he is Michael’s identical twin. Jacob is a Hebrew forename meaning “supplanter”; in some theories, his name is thought to have evolved from Ya'aqov'el meaning "may God protect". In Biblical mythology, Jacob had a twin brother named Esau. Jacob’s twelve sons became the founders of the twelve tribes of Israel (i.e., Jake and his brother will give birth to a new species of humanoid squids). François is the French equivalent of Francis; Jake is named after St. Francis of Assisi. Chrétien is the French masculine form of 'Christian'.

Magdalena (Magda) de Jesus Nuñez: A young Hispanic woman abducted at the same time as Yukiyanagi, Malcolm, Jacob, and Michael; she is later made into a cattle slave by the squids. Her forename is based on the biblical prostitute, Mary Magdalene, who had seven devils cast out of her by Christ (Mark 16:9, Luke 8:2). Mary Magdalene is now venerated as a saint. Her surname is taken from Álvar de Núñez Cabeza de Vaca, a Spanish conquistador (1490-1557), who endured many trials in his journey across the Gulf region of what is now Texas. The character Magda is a saintly, adventurous and brave character that sacrifices herself in order to help the human-squid resistance.

Malcolm Imamura: Ian’s 14-year-old brother. Malcolm is a Scottish male forename meaning “devotee of St. Columba”. In the Shakespearean tragedy Macbeth, Malcolm is the elder son of King Duncan and heir to the Scottish throne. Macbeth kills King Duncan in his ambition the gain power for himself, while Malcolm flees to England and gathers an army to retake the Scottish throne. In this story, Malcolm is a troubled young man whose father has been murdered by squids, and he wishes to restore the honor of his family, which is half-Scottish in nature.

Michael (Mike) Jean Chrétien: Identical twin to Jacob F. Chrétien. In Hebrew, Michael means “who is like God”. In the Bible’s Book of Revelation, he is the angel that fought “the dragon”, Satan, during the war in heaven. Jean is the French version of John; Michael is named after St. John the Baptist.

Meléx: An adult squid, life-mate to Ian, and prince of Atharax. Meléx is a name derived from a combination of the name Melville and the word mêlée. Melville was a French Norman place name meaning “bad town”; it later evolved into the Scottish surname Melville, most famously borne by the American author Herman Melville. Melville is well known for Moby-Dick, a story about the sailor Ishmael who travels under Captain Ahab on a vessel called Pequod. Ahab’s sole purpose was to seek vengeance and destroy Moby Dick, a white sperm whale who had decimated Ahab’s ship and tore off his leg. In this story, Ian is the sailor that lives with Prince Meléx, who seeks vengeance against his father Saxen (a sea creature), who sexually abused him as a child. Mêlée is the French word for melee, meaning “confused fight or skirmish”. Meléx was also born in a “bad town” and is confused about where his loyalties lie: with the people of Atharax, or solely with his immediate family?

Rajak: An adult squid who commands the ship which abducts Ian, sentenced to death by Meléx. Rajak is derived from the Indian term for monarch, raja (alternately spelled rajah).

Sàbehl: A teenage squid, son of Silaren and cousin to Suli. Sàbehl is a name derived from the Muslim male forename Sabeh, meaning “pretty, handsome, beautiful”. In this story, Sàbehl has both a beautiful outer and inner nature.

Saxen: An elderly squid, father to Meléx and emperor of Atharax. Saxen is a name derived from a combination of the names Satan and Saxon. The name Satan is Hebrew for “adversary”; in Biblical mythology, he is the ruler of Hell. Saxon refers to the Germanic Saxon people, who invaded and colonized England in the 5-6th centuries A.D. In this story, Saxen serves a dual role as the evil invader of Earth and a psycho-sexual invader of humans.

Shinobu Imamura: Ian’s father. Shinobu is a Japanese male forename meaning “endurance”. Shinobu was a student of martial arts who taught his son how to fight and prepared him for a life in the prison-like environment of Atharax. Shinobu had to hone his physical and mental endurance to learn martial arts, which require focus and concentration as well as pure physical strength.

Silaren: An elderly squid, uncle to Suli and father of Sàbehl. Silaren is a name derived from the Silures people, the warlike tribe of ancient Wales. Siluren’s nature is warlike; he is willing to fight anyone to protect the honor of his only son Sàbehl, and avoid the pain that Suli went through as a child and young adult.

Suli: An adult squid and Meléx’s best friend, nephew of Silaren. Suli is a name derived from Suleiman I of Persia, a Safavid shah of Persia who reigned between 1666-94. Suleiman I was brought up in a harem (i.e., Suli was brought up in the Saxen’s harem, where he suffered repeated sexual abuse).

Synéxtar: The name of a preserved genetically modified squid brain holding the central squid information library in the Atharax royal palace. Synéxtar is derived from the English word sinister.

Yukiyanagi (Yuki) Wakahisa: A 20-year-old human woman, life-mate to Suli, abducted at the same time as Jacob and Michael. Yukiyanagi is the name of a Japanese flowering shrub with white blossoms, Spiraea thunbergii; it means, “snow willow”. Wakahisa is a Japanese surname meaning “forever young” (i.e., the process of genetic modification via squid life-mating leads to longevity in humans).

Zenex: The name of the Atharax maximum security prison located on the planet’s surface. Zenex is derived from Xanax, which is a psychoactive pharmaceutical drug used in the treatment of anxiety. Zenex is a play on words: in prison, you must be anxious in order to stay alive. Zenex will not cure anxiety – rather, it will produce and intensify it.

Review Responses:

The IofI review page is located here.

  1. @Mako - Thanks :) I'm glad some people like the story. I'm not a professional author, and I have no previous experience writing creatively so that's a real compliment. I'm sure by now you know that the prince is Meléx.
  2. @hirumi - Ian's future is fraught with danger but he's definitely a fighter. The prince has issues too but together they will become a formidable, if cheesy, duo.
  3. @sabaku_lotus - The squids take men, women, children, and everyone in between. Before Ian, no slave survived. The Emperor rules the whole planet, but Meléx is next in line for the throne. I'm not sure how many chapters there will be, but at chapter 20 it's not even half over.
  4. @sabaku_lotus - Ian will go through a ton of pain and suffering but in the end, he is the main protagonist and I have grown to like him a little bit. So he's not going to die from suicide, but lots of other slaves and squids will die because it's a war. And remember, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger.
  5. @miles - It's not usually my kind of story either! But when I started it I was really depressed and that's the way the wind blew that day. Thank you so very much from the bottom of my cold, frozen heart for the compliment on my writing. It does mean a lot to me. Ian is about 19, and he gets pregnant at least once in this story. I get obsessed with things easily so that's why there are fast updates.
  6. @poppyhigh - Thanks a bunch :), you are very sweet and I could always use the support. I don't like stories that are only about sex or aliens so you can rest assured that every story I write will not be pure porn. Cluizela is going to be a spitfire of a young squid-woman, and I look forward to writing her character.
  7. @Anon - Sigh. I'm both bipolar and bulimic, and my behavior is very impulsive and wildly erratic. A few therapists think I have PTSD as well, but I don't really agree with that. I'm also no longer a grad student, I graduated a while ago. I'm not planning on publishing these kind of works, because they are too poorly written and conceived. I will not review others' work because I don't have enough time, and I am a harsh critic, because I am extremely hard on myself. I would list the symptoms of bipolar here but it's long winded and will annoy everyone. Let me give you a link: http://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/publications/bipolar-disorder/what-are-the-symptoms-of-bipolar-disorder.shtml Also, thank you for your advice and constructive criticism.
  8. @Katniss Everdeen - Thank you, thank you, thank you. I try hard to own my mistakes. Please see review response 7. I was manic, behaving very impulsively, hadn't eaten or slept for around a week (or 2, I'm honestly not sure) and practically high on hunger.
  9. @Blair - I have a twisted sense of humor. It was a joke, but I removed that reference to W. Moers. What you are referring to is "reverse racism", but I don't want to get into an argument about the nature and scope of racism. Let's agree to disagree.
  10. @poppyhigh - You are quite possibly the most awesome person in the universe. Ian told me to tell you that he hearts you, and will you mail him some clothing? Yes, humans are pretty great when they put their thinking tooks on, and make wise decisions.
  11. @angelmay - Ian is 19 as of Ch. 20.
  12. @yuurimaoh - LOL. Yeah, I would have liked to add that in, but it would have to be sort of a memory that Ian either steals or Malcolm gives him. I didn't think Malcolm would want to share his first sexual experience that he actually liked with his older bro, it would be a little tmi. I'm not sure how this story will end, but let's hope it's good.
  13. @yuurimaoh - "Don't worry, be happy..." I like her too much to kill her. At least, not yet.
  14. @yuurimaoh - :D Yeah, I was doing research on squid anatomy and I found that link and whaddayaknow, I had already picked out the Cypress Hill track to include in Ch. 22's songs. I thought, perfect! I had to share it with y'all. And Wikipedia is awesome for nursery rhyme and lullaby lyrics... I think Sàbehl is my favorite character in this story, because he is so loyal and sweet. I remembered the way Natalie Portman looked in the bathtub in the 1995 movie Heat and thought to myself, well Malcolm could do that too. The idea of finding a loved one in a bathtub filled with pink water is pretty scary. I wish I could see this story made into a movie. I think it would be NC-17 though. Not even HBO would touch it.
  15. @Avatar_Tingal - Thank you very much! You made my day. :)
  16. @Avatar_Tingal - Ian says he's extremely grateful for the gift of clothing! A kimono is an awesome idea. Suli has some dark secrets of his own, those will be revealed in the next few chapters I think.
  17. @yuurimaoh - Things aren't going to be safe for a long time in Ian's universe :(. It's freaking awesome to be on your recommended authors list, I totally don't deserve it! I'm honestly surprised that some members like this story. It's not something I myself would read...at least, I think so. Ian's world is so incredibly dark, but he has such a good outlook on life (and a great deal of luck) that things can't get him down. I read the blurb you wrote about my writing and it's so nice! I don't really know what's original about my writing, but it's great to think someone else thinks it is...if that makes any sense. To be on the same list as Twisted Hilarity is pretty cool.
  18. @Avatar_Tingal - SPOILER ALERT  I've never watched soap operas but I figure they mostly consist of: 1) lovers fall in love, 2) lovers have a child, 3) love triangle appears, 4) someone has an evil twin, 5) lovers get divorced, etc.... Ooooo Queen is a FRAWESOME idea for songs! Makeup sex is the best sex. I'm torn between having Yuki answering the door crying because Suli tossed her out, or Silaren at the door ready to meet his new grandson. And I'm pretty sure at some point Ian will be back on Earth, or get very close to Earth, but it will be like in The Planet of the Apes and most people will be dead and/or have cancer from nuclear warfare caused by trying to kill the squids.
  19. @Avatar_Tingal - Thanks G! I'm having terrible writer's block and can't seem to get started on Ch 26. Your encouragement keeps me going. :) I haven't heard that song but I'll look it up. I started re-reading H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds so hopefully that will give me some inspiration. It's humbling to realize how great of an author he was, and how far I have to go in my writing.
  20. @yurrimaoh

The website was giving me a little trouble logging in for a while, but now that I'm able to log in again, I'll toss both chapter reviews into one!

Chapter 25- Uh oh. Domestic violence. I had a bad feeling that Suli wasn't going to take the "barren" idea lightly. Poor Yuki. And here we thought Suli was one of the kinder ones.

Yeah the site gave us all trouble. I found a way to work around it using my browser security settings. Ch 25 - Yeah Suli is a bad dude, he's a wolf in sheep's clothing. I liked making some drama there, it was becoming too happy-fluffy for my taste. Trouble should be around every corner! lol
  21. @yurrimaoh [having trouble with the stupid numbering system. Argh.]
  22. Chapter 26- Suli, what are you really after? And I'm curious about Czadkial and this renegade sect. I'm relieved that Yuki survived for his sake. And, go Malcom! Tell it like it is! I'm glad things with Silaren were sorted out, but I'm wary of Suli and the troubles that surely await them around the corner.

Suli is power-hungry, and jealous of his brother. Czadkial is a badass savior type. He's hella smart and hot to boot. Malcolm is finding his inner strength and growing up quickly b/c he has a child now. Mothers usually have to grow up a bit, become less selfish, when they become preggers and/or give birth. At least, that's what I've heard. Never had a kid myself (thank baby Jesus. They're hard work!). I liked adding the father-in-law element, in-laws are always difficult no matter the species :).

Aaahh, no soap operas please ! :D Space operas are waaayyy cooler...

By the way: Your idea to add something like Planet of the Apes is absolutely phantastic. :yahoo:

Like I said already, this story is epic! Ever thought of publishing it as a book?

WARNING: MORE SPOILERS

lol yeah, I was on the spinning bike the other day at the gym and I came across the Return to the Planet of the Apes on the tv (the lame one with the cancer guys all in black) and I thought, man it'd be cool to add an element like that. But maybe no time traveling. ALTHOUGH.... some scientists theorize that if you travel through a black hole, it will take you to a different place in space and time.

I have a lot of ideas about the next few chapters concerning some terrible double crossing... I'm just trying to figure out how to introduce the nefarious deeds in...

It will take some extra time to write this next chapter, as I have some other writing I need to get done (some that I will actually get paid money to do).

And yes, it'd be awesome to publish this, but it seems kind of NC-17.

LOL, yeah, I agree with you about the time travels. Due to the physics of black holes they might be possible, but they rarely are doing any good (gah, just think of the space-time paradoxon! *shudders*)Just my personal thaughts: since Ian will have a long live now, a time travel won't be necessary.

About publishing 'The inasion of Ian' : At very first and most important: Take all the time you need to finish this story.Whatever you've planned for the future, I'm sure it will make this already awesome story even better!"

Concerning the following paragraph: I really really don't want to kvetch. It are just suggestions. ^_^

About publishing: I don't know in which country you live, but I suppose it's the U.S. I did google a bit and it seems really difficult to publish such an explicit story in the USA. So, why not publish it in Europe? Maybe a Dutch publisher's house? Or, another suggestion, the Bruno Gmünder publishing house in Germany? I'm sure, the 'Invasion of Ian' would fit perfectly into their

publishing program. And since I love this story so much, I would be ready, willing and game for anything (and without demanding any fees :D )to translate the story into German. What do you think?

Greetings

Gabriel

 I like your ideas, Gabriel! You can email me at magicmau5.aff@gmail.com or on my author FB page.

LMFAO I just looked up Bruno Gmünder and the first title I saw was The Ass Book by Christian Scheuß and Micha Schulze. Is it horrible to admit that I really want that book? Not just for writing, but for personal use? I don't have a bf now, but it's always good to have this info for future reference!

My therapist told me not to force myself to write constantly - she told me to take a break from writing for an entire week!!! So I won't be posting Chapter 27 until about March 17th. (yikes! what to do with all that free time?)
