I agree with what others say, that the characters should set the tone. The story I'm writing now, the girl learned her terms from both the lifestyle she grew up in and the person who introduced her to sex, who is a bit of a pervert. She's got a pretty crude way of speaking, but it suits her, it suits the story it is.

Personally? I like either the crude or the avoidance. Clincal terms make me feel like I'm back in biology class (not to mention every time I hear the word Penis, I envision my friend's son who at the age of three, thought that was the funniest word ever, so he used to shout it at the top of his lungs in random places, like hospitals, churches, and malls.) "Cutsie" terms make me want to retch. Sorry, but I don't have a blossoming flower between my legs and I've never fucked a guy who had a magical wand of love.

I started writing fics for adult fanfiction just to figure out how to write a sex scene since I had never done so before. I've written before but not erotica. Anyway, when I started I immediately ran into a big problem which up to now I have not fully solved.

Are there no synonyms for "nipple?"

What about "vagina?" Sure, I've used "orifice," "passage" and "opening" but not hole because somehow I think it sounds mechanical lol. It's just those terms are not specific, I was worried readers were wondering *which* orifice I meant. I don't want people imagining the characters are having anal sex when they aren't!

Melody, I'm LMAO! I was looking at your list and I think it's a safe bet I've used at least 98% of those terms, and a few that weren't mentioned. Here's a link to a website that may be useful to anyone interested:

Sex-Lexis Dictionary

Also, Roget's College Edition (or is it Collegiate?) Thesaurus is unabridged, so they've got the most common terms covered. Who knew a reference book could be so damn entertaining?

Creaming most definitely refers to female ejaculation/orgasm. At least, I've never seen it applied to a guy in any situation. Probably has connotations from breast milk.

Otherwise, the list seemed to just about cover everything.

Actually, growing up in the '70s, we used to have the expression "Cream your jeans" and it usually refered to guys as in, "Yeah, she was so hot that when she walked by, Bobby over here creamed his jeans."

I didn't write the list. I just found it helpful and amusing. Who couldn't use a list of lots of sexual terms dirty and otherwise?

I read in a book once (by James Clavell, I think) about a Chinese idiom that refers to the penis as "The One-Eyed Monk" and the vagina as "The Temple Gate." Whether it was an actual idiom or not, I don't know, but I used it in a story. It's so rich and earthy. I think there's another Chinese phrase refering to orgasm as "The Clouds and The Rain."

i think the only other word for nipple is Teat, or Arioli. (excuse the spelling, i don't know if i have it right or not) but they are both such cold and sterile words that it's a real turn off for anyone reading them.

we need to invent some new words for nipple. something erotic and yet simple. something that can really catch on. There is a lot of writing talent on AFF, surely we can think of somethng. if we combine our imginations we could be in the dictionary before 2010.

I offer the challenge of thinking up new words for Nipple.

"And he leapt on her, tearing away her flimsy purple blouse to reveal squeezably soft, milky white breasts, with her Peanut Butter M&Ms stiffly announcing that she was, in fact, turned on."

Hmmm. . . nah.

laugh.gif I kinda thought teat meant the whole breast? Areola according to the list refers to the dark rings and you are right, it sounds a bit scientific/clinical to me.

I do wish we had more sexy non-vulgar words for body parts.

Okay, I'm quoting myself here, but:

"...her engorged, crimson lips unfurling like the soft petals of a lotus...lodging his head between her porcelain thighs, he pressed his mouth upon her mound; licking, lapping, glutting himself on the succulent pomegranate folds of her flesh, the savory nectar flowing over his tongue and cascading down his throat."

"Flame of the Cyprian Fire"

That was one of my rare "lyrical/poetic" moments.

I guess that puts F/F writers in a real bind. "Man, I wish I knew which silky passage was being played with." Ugh. Silky passage!

Exactly...

Inkslinger, nice!

Yeah I know and I can write a flowery/romantic scene that way. However, more er graphic scenes require more actual words. The first fic I wrote was a non-con one by an insane psychopath and I hardly think he is the type to think "tunnel of love" lol.

It's hell trying to think of enough earthy, sexy words for body parts without making it extremely vulgar.

PS for chinese I believe the vagina is called "jade gate" and sex is "clouds and rain" *snicker* but it's way too flowery for me.

That is awesomely florid, Inkslinger, well done. But I think I like a more graphic approach as far as actual arousal goes. As prose, that was spot on.

You could always go for plan B, avoidance. Personally, the less I use words for gentalia, the better it seems to go. To quote myself:

"Her hips rolled and his thoughts were scattered, his concentration back on the task at, err, hand. Roy pulled her back against his chest, rougher than he meant to be, but she moaned anyway. He buried his face in her hair and neck, muffling his groans as she moved for them both. All he could do was follow, counteracting her hips while clinging to her. Riza’s head rolled back onto his shoulder, and he kissed her, deeply, held there when her hand fisted his dark hair."

Does it help for an example?

I think the funnest part is finding a way to describe it so you're sure your readers know exactly what you are talking about, without having to say a whole heck of a lot. I have my descriptions, but I absolutely WILL NOT describe breasts with the Ukrainian word for them, which is about so ludicrous a word as to make you want to laugh your pants off and about the most unsexy term I've ever heard. And "teats" remind me of animals, not humans. Nor will I EVER call them "erectile tissue" which just about brings the entire feeling into the basement of emotion. Not unless I do a fic about robot/human love....hmmm...well, THERE's a possibility!

*Ahem* apex. Tip. I've read nub and pebble. But I'm sure you have plenty of ideas by now, after reading Mel's list. (Damn, that girl knows how to steal thunder!) biggrin.gif

But think about it. How many ways can you describe "elbow"? Probably what you Want to convey is the feeling that shoots straight down into the honeypot.

Serenanna, well at this point anything helps.

Storyjunkie, yes I try to convey the feelings and thoughts of the characters along with the graphic/visual details.

It's just that when I'm writing the simplest thing, I run into this problem of repeating the same word over and over again. For example:

"Her face got flushed as heat spread through her body, centered at her nipples and between her legs. The Cetra fought the unwilling arousal of her body as Sephiroth sucked each of her sensitive nipples in turn and stroked her breasts. His hands and mouth greedily licked, sucked and played with the smooth curves of her bosom and hardening nipples."

I used nipple once in each sentence which I know is too much...and I wasn't finished hahahaha. I had to cut off the description there because I didn't have enough words even though I wanted to prolong the excitement. *pouts* I guess next time I'll keep the suggestions here in mind.

Nip, Nipple, tit, pebble (choose your colour), silver dollars, pennies... maybe we need to start branching off into other languages for names?

As for the male, ahem, "member":

Pink snake

drooling lizard

Trouser friend

Hot cream cone with cum on top

The Third Leg.

Bah, I swear that's why I prefer writing gay sex. There's never a good way to use eupahnisms for "vagina" without a)being cheesy or cool.gif being gross.

i always find Vagina is a bit too Biology class to really make a good sex scene, why can't we use nicer words like Vagoo or somethng.

I usually take the more graphic approach, then feel like I should, I don't know, "dress it up pretty" or something. That's when I end up getting into the prose. I think it depends on where the characters are in their heads, emotions, relationship, etc. If it's a deep connection, more prose, if they're just having a wild fantastic shag, graphic.

That's pretty much how I write sex scenes. It all depends on how the characters feel about one another. Although, I usually don't use the f-word or anything else like that when describing. Not to say the characters themselves don't say it, I just don't like using it for descriptions.

For some strange reason getting too graphic just makes me think of badly written porn. lol tongue.gif

Yeah, 'cause we all know there are absolutely no ways to describe the male genitalia that are cheesy or gross. laugh.gif

I actually think there are a fair number of ways to describe the vagina without getting techical or crude. Opening, flower, womanhood, so on and so forth. To be honest, the word, "Pussy" doesn't even seem vulgar to me. But, because "Pussy" has been so adopted by the pure porn crowd, if I were to write a story where sex was described vividly and not biologically or crudely, I'd go with "Kitty."

It's mostly in the mind of the reader. Personally, I find most of the "Not clinical" terms for a guy's bits to be... amusing. "Staff, wand, rod," And yeah, male bits have a lot of unmistakable cheesey descriptions, "Purple helmeted warrior of passion" being my personal sniggering point.

My problem with most of the vulgar words for male organs is that they are words for other things too. "Dick" is a common name. "Cock" is a rooster. There is at least one vulgar word for the female bits that is completely unique to the female bits.

I think the best thing to do is to let the characters dictate. The story I'm writing now, crude language is called for, because the people in the story are blunt, particularly the main character. If she suddenly went into, "And then he parted the lips of my uniqueness and urged forth his firm staff bearing the bodyjuice of life-starting essence," the story would just completely not work.

By the same token, were I writing a fairy tale style story, using P, D, and C

words would be disruptive too. Honestly, I don't think I could handle it very well. Tales like that are very...delicate and the wrong word used at the wrong time could ruin it for the reader.

(Actually, StoryJunkie has a Marvelous story with that "Fairy Tale" quality to it. Besides the sex in the story, I feel like there's an orgy of the english language going on, it's great. )

The style that always gets to me is when people become body parts. "He entered her." Yes, it's a great sentence, but part of my mind always gets this vision of one person shrinking or the other enlarging so someone can be entered. while that might have beenKeith's (anyone remember Keith? Anyone heard from him?) thing, it's something that makes me just giggle. There's nothing wrong with that style and it's been used for years with rip roarin' success, but when my mind gets too exact, I have trouble remember that "Him" and "Her" are substitutes for his bits and her bits.

*blushes* I wondered if, truly, can this be done? and I began to type, and lo, the words did flow. I've only attempted that style once before, and I was rather pleased with the results. In fact, at one point, all I wanted was to use the word "rake" in a description. maybe it was that dream I had on the riverbank.

I think writing sex scenes takes finesse, because one word can mess it up. Like the word "hole". Unless, you are writing that story "Ghostwriter" wrote about Holly's Home Invasion Holy Crap, that was one scary and arousing peice of work, and she used both derogatory and technical terms to describe sexual aspects of the human body. There are warnings for this fic, and don't read it if you find rape scary.

EDIT: I found an author's note regarding the above story, and my instincts proved true. Although a work of fiction, the author drew upon a personal experience.

Oh boy! *claps hands in glee* I just love this topic! As a matter of fact I wrote almost an entire chapter on it in Like Father Like Son - let's see here - how about Peace maker, Sword of Love, Penile Pike, Holy Poker, Kingpin, Tallywhacker, Cock-sickle, short arm, trouser snake, Lance of Life, pants rabbit, Merrymaker, bunless dawg, skin raker, poon raker and my all time favorite - "I distinctly remember someone saying something about my revolver being a bit shorter in the barrel than theirs." (Thank you Squall)

I answered to soft core (I think) but the truth of the matter is I'm all over the place. It depends on my mood and just who is doing the "dirty" deed. As far as girl's body parts, well I have a problem with slang words like poontang *shudder* pussy *gag* and my all time favorite cunt *blows chunks*... I think womanhood and folds are more along my speed. spit.gif
