Given how my Potter fanfic is developing, I’m having to lean in heavily onto google maps, which is why I’m picking up on more of these details.

You have five former counties.  You have five current boroughs.  Most importantly, you have five slightly different ways of saying, “at least we’re not Detroit.  Or Chiraq.”
You can tell a Brooklynite, you just can’t tell them anything.  Why are the buildings so tall in Manhattan?  Short buildings get caught in their nostrils.  Why is it called The Bronx?  To assure everyone else that there will only ever be one of them.  What is the greatest achievement of Queens?  That they ran off most of the acutal ‘queens’ to Greenwich Village.  Why is it Staten Island?  New Jersey didn’t want them, either.
    … I think I’ll see myself out now…
[added ten minutes later...] But there is ‘redemption,’ and there’s good in bad in most places.  Suzanne Vega could only have written Tom’s Diner at Broadway and West 112th Street.  You can practically feel Morningside Heights when you listen to it, whether the original recording or the DNA remix.  Likewise, Billy Joel is a New Yorker from The Bronx, and Upper Manhattan gave us the absolute brilliance of the Harlem Renaissance.

“Illin’ noise” is also frozen solid.  I haven’t left the house in almost a week because of it.  It’s forecast to get up to a balmy twenty-four degrees Fahrenheit tomorrow, though.

Option two would definitely be up Youngman’s alley.
Meanwhile, I’ve been stuck with a Suzanne Vega earworm for the past several hours.  And, there’s nothing I can do do do duh do do do duh about it.  Not kidding about the earworm, though.
    Cheers!

It’s provocative to say the least.  Maybe the man’s an idiot?  Maybe the man’s saying his wife’s too ugly to fuck?  Maybe she’s refusing his advances?  (And sneakily bopping his sister instead.)  Maybe he’s fitted a chastity belt onto her?  Number of reasons go through my head, which is about as interesting to the fact the mind spat that out yesterday morning as I woke up.

...or an opening joke from a Borscht Belt comedy routine.  Did you ever visit the Catskills in the ‘60s through the ‘80s?  Or, maybe you’re just channeling Rodney Dangerfield or Henny Youngman?  In my mind’s ear, I can hear either man saying exactly that on stage.
You could use the quote to open an Al Czervik based Caddyshack fan-fiction.
    Cheers!

I’m a second generation native of NYC, born and raised in Manhattan, and now living in The Bronx. True story here: The OB who delivered my mother also delivered me at the same hospital, and was Chairman Emeritus of the department when I delivered Elderspawn at the same hospital. The secret to NYC? Forget boroughs, and think of us as a rather large collection of small towns all stuck together in a relatively small space. If you wandered into my current neighborhood, you would NOT believe you were in The Bronx, but my zip code begs to differ.

NYC’s cold but not quite polar vortex cold. We’re getting a light snow mixed with freezing rain, because the gods will not be happy until I wind up sliding across the street, and I keep waiting for the daft one to call and tell me he’s working late, so I can see if my Jeep wants to ski downhill to the train station.
But aside from that, let’s just say that winter sucks. ❄️🪦

Snow and ice aren’t the problem for once. (And even then, the issue is the repeated thawing and freezing making the roads unsafe.) The problem right now is the temperature and windchill. I can’t remember the last time we hit 2 degrees, let alone stayed there for several hours with a negative anything windchill. My friend Autumn’s windows apparently froze over on the inside earlier this week.  Like, when the frick did we move to Canada???

Thanks for the laugh, @GeorgeGlass.  If anyone said that fanfiction was easier than original work, it sure wasn’t me.  It’s not harder, either; but the challenges to write well in either one can vary.  Fanfiction for “non-episodic” canon stories almost always involves changes, along with either following canon, or explaining why you took a different path through the story itself.
That’s why I’m working on Chapter 12, and I’m only putting Charlie Weasley on the Hogwarts Express.  While I’m effectively having to write a compressed story just to get to the ‘Harry Potter as lead protagonist’ part of my story, the other alternative would be a literal cosmic ass-pull, since Harry, Ron, and Neville will have changed that much by September of 1991.  It was tricky enough demonstrating that Petunia Evans had changed that much in Chapter 1, simply by choosing a different husband.
