I should add that I only do original fics, as I have no idea how to do real fan fiction!

Usually what happens is that I get ideas just before I go to sleep, then I half dream about it for several days or weeks until I write some ideas down about the characters. Sometimes I get ideas just about dialogue, and record that. Then when I really make a decision to start a story, I begin by creating a character sketch including name, background, visual description, internal and external conflicts, family history and personality quirks. I do this for the main characters and as I go along, add them for minor characters. Then I make notes of the particular scenes and places involved in the story: descriptions, locations, smells, etc. After all that is done, I create a more cogent plot outline. This may start from the beginning and go to the end, or the end and go toward the beginning, or start in the middle, etc. I put the plot together like a puzzle as I go along. Then I make a concerted effort to write the first chapter notes, and subsequent notes for later chapters. Finally, I outline the first chapter and work on each section of the outline. Often the plot springs out of dialogue ideas or ideas I get from popular culture. For instance, I might get an idea from a sketch comedy on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon or Saturday Night Live. The current fic I'm writing stems from a Jimmy Fallon sketch he did with Justin Timberlake. It may sound random, but I tend to get really random ideas and flesh out a story from that original spark. It seems to work well now that I use Scrivener, because it has sections for research, character sketches, locations, etc. I also should note that I keep a log of all the research I do and derive ideas from that as well.

@Jade: so you got my message. I feel like a stalker or something. I just took an hour and a half (during SNL - Lady Gaga was hosting and she was actually pretty good) to look at the ch over my phone, which always seems to help me see mistakes better than on my laptop. And I found, let me count them...13 grammatical mistakes and 2 issues with too frequent use of adjectives. "Little", "massive", and "embarrassment" among them. I have problems with the word massive in relation to penis size. Because I've had my fair share of men, and the average penis size is 7 inches. I find it very hard to believe my male love interest could have a 10 in cock. But, it's a story so what the hey?
This is funny b/c I have yet to address you review!
Hey I'm glad you liked this chapter. I spent a week on it, I think. I thought about it all through the day and well into the night. I thought about it when I woke up, and when I was walking the dog, you get the point! I had to reconcile a lot of little bits of the plot that are easy to mess up - like the age of Elliot, when Luke's grandpa died, how old Tony Hawk was when Fico was 11, etc. Now, if you go back and look in the earlier chapters, you'll see that Elliot is initially described by Fico as appearing around 6-7 yrs. Tilde just confirms his judgement in this chapter.
Next chapter: a scary/sexy dream of Fico and Luke together. Gotta love dream sequences!

I tend to read published slash because they're edited and tend to be higher quality - no offense to the amateur writers here! But there's no comparison to a professional with tons of practice. I list most of them on goodreads. I go for stuff with a good plot, not pure porn. My faves are:
Special Forces: Soldiers by Aleksandr Voinov and Marquesate <<< violent but touching, a bit on the long side
I'll Be Your Drill, Soldier (okay dumb title but good book) by Crystal Rose <<<actually very sweet
    Stockholm Syndrome by Richard Rider
the series: Warchild, Cagebird and Burndive by Karin Lowachee
Special Delivery and it's sequel, Double Blind by Heidi Cullinan <<< really really enjoyable books!
Scrap Metal by Harper Fox, and most others by Harper Fox <<< so sweet and romantic
Hot Head by Damon Suede <<< also a really enjoyable read
    Red Skies by Joanne Kells
How to Save a Life by Sloan Parker <<<kind of scary but awesome and romantic
Zero at the Bone by Jane Seville
Bloodraven by PL Nunn <<<but that's a classic, right, everyone's read that!
    Basic Training by Marquesate
    Thinking Straight by Robin Reardon
    Crossing Borders by ZA Maxfield
    Captain's Surrender by Alex Beecroft
Faith & Fidelity by Tere Michaels
Open Cover Before Striking by Willa Okati
State of Mind by Libby Drew
To Catch A Fox by Justin Lovell
    Cherry Pie by Samantha Kane
most every book by Ethan Day, his Sno Ho is soooooo hilarious
The Tucker Springs series, like Dirty Laundry, etc.
    Simple Men by Eric Arvin
....and dozens others. I love to read!
I'm reading Where You Are by JH Trumble right now and it is pretty good.

@FD: I can't sleep so I'm responding to this at almost 2 am. Ack!
lolz you fell asleep on your phone? Sounds like me! Yeah I can't believe you took an entire day to write a review. Kind of too much effort, don't you think? Get some sleep, girly! I really liked your last review, it was awesomesauce. I suppose just remember this story is steeped in the absurd, and Fico really doesn't like to get all emotional. He just shoves it inside until he has a big burst of anger/sadness. Anger comes next chapter. Part of him just wants to be taken care of, to be babied. So that was kind of his first reaction to Luke. But also, he's afraid to open up to Luke, to kiss him, to be with him, because Luke is so closeted and he's really, really afraid of rejection, the more so since his mom kicked him out. Yeah, kisses to come in later chapters. Hold yer horses! Patience is a virtue.

@FD: Oh such a good review! I love it when a reader finds something wrong so I can fix it.
Um, yeah this whole story is completely absurd. 1) Cubans and Mexicans don't get along. Mexicans think that Cubans are stuck up. Cubans think that Mexicans are illegal wetbacks and don't come here through the right process. This isn't true for everyone, obviously. 2) The dicks are way too big. I mean, come on. 8 inches is already pretty long. 3) These guys are way too hot to begin with. 4) What are the chances that a hot new guy's mom actually works in another hot but insecure guy's mom's law firm? Nada, zip, zero. 5) What are the chances that said insecure yet hot guy gets picked up by a famous model? Who has a crush on him and is secretly insecure and lonely? Also nada, zip, zilch, zed. The list could go on, and on, and on into infinity!
I hadn't really thought specifically about the emotional development. Fico was supposed to be really stunned by the development of Luke being bi, so he didn't even try to kiss Luke back. And the kiss is being saved for next time to keep you interested. Or annoyed or both .
I asked TRUgrit for feedback but she was too busy to get back to me. So good thing I have you! Should I rewrite it do you think? I don't really know what to change.
I think Fico is like this guy that hasn't dealt with his dad's death or his mom kicking him out at all. He just hides his pain and thinks that's enough. So when Luke says he's bi, it's like this windfall they he's so grateful for, but scared of at the same time. All he can do is cry because he has all these unshed tears for his dad and mom. He doesn't really know how to connect with someone, all he has is this huge hole inside him that he wants to fill with a boyfriend. But what he really needs is family. Which is where Joaco comes in. Joaco was more of a father figure to him, and the loss of that, or the apparent loss of that, was the most devastating part of the previous night. Part of his memory loss is because he simply can't process it, like PTSD. He unconsciously blocked all that out because it was just too much to bear. In the next chapter, he'll deal with it when he and Joaco get in a fight. That's when all shit gets laid on the table.
I write this story from the perspective of Fico, so you don't get to see things happen to other characters until after the fact. I think you forgot that at the time of Fico leaving, his friends were upstairs so they didn't actually see him go. Only Luke saw it. About 40 minutes passed from the time he left the loft and the time he went to the hospital, so it's plausible that kids during a party don't even notice their friend is AWOL until the next morning, especially if they got drunk. If you know high school kids like I do, they will somehow get a hold of booze in a household and sneak it to their friends in plastic cups so it looks like any old Coke (Okay I might have done that once or twice in my time). When he woke up, Fico deliberately didn't check his messages b/c he was scared. And he was unconscious for most of the time in the hospital. But he actually has a ton messages! See ch 13 . Yeah a couple of his non-hungover friends are in the waiting room sitting awkwardly wondering if he still has a dick to pee with. LOL.
Usually hospitals here have pretty strict visiting hours, so people can't just sit in the room doodling or whatever waiting for their friends to wake up. They have to sit in the waiting room for hours doing nothing but stewing in their own anxiety. It sucks. So after a couple hours, you're like, "Fuck it, I'm going home. Call me when he wakes up."Obviously Luke has pressured the nurse into letting him stay, but it's rare for doctors to let anyone except for someone's immediate family see them after surgery, unless they ask specifically for them. I think it'd be weird to give someone roses and get well card if they had a Viagra problem but that's just me. It's not something you'd want to tweet about, "Hey man, hope your dick is better!" But that's kind of funny, I might add it to the next chapter!
I really appreciate the review. I love the "wow this is great" reviews but prefer the constructive ones more .

Off the Wall (OTW) is my latest and maybe-not-so-greatest addition to the magical wonderland of AFF. It's about a cubano skater boy, Fico, who tries to negotiate the trials of growing up Latino and gay while having an unrequited crush on the school's golden boy, Luke. It is set in present-day L.A., California, and begins in mid-August 2012 as Bishop Mora Salesian High School starts fall term. The story is peppered with words in regional Spanish dialects and a small amount of English skater slang.
I've tried to reply to reviews at the bottom of each chapter, but I also want to publish my Spotify playlist. So I moved the responses here, where I can add links and stuff...
The Spotify playlist containing the OTW soundtrack is available online here. Songs are added with each successive chapter. You can generally find the local files (files only available in my Spotify music library) at The Hype Machine.
The reviews for OTW are available for viewing here.

Okay ladies and gents! I've compiled a few slang dictionaries and I'm adding them here in case you're interested or have trouble with reading the story.
You may find the dictionary at http://www.netlingo.com/index.php or http://transl8it.com useful with the SMS lingo.

@FD: Actually LOL. muahahahaha *diabolical laughter* Yes, I am an evil, evil author, aren't I? *rubs hands in glee* I have a reason for that chapter, it sets up a crucial scene later in the story that will blow your effing socks off. I cooked it up last night during another insomnia episode. I'm soooooo excited about it that I'm grinning from ear to ear. There's so much about Joaco that is effing awesome, in a not-so-healthy way. What do you think Fico will find under his bed? hahahahahahahahaha so excited... Man, I am so effing glad I introduced Joaco's character. Much better than Luke. Although, Luke has some pretty interesting clandestine activities himself. So excited. Did I mention I'm excited? :D

magicmau5 reacted to Aysha c.c. in Best or Worst review you've ever gotten
First, let me clear something up, Aysha is a man. Aisha Clanclan just happens to be my favorite anime NecoGirl and is probably my favorite cartoon character of all time. I just like the name spelled with a Y though.
As for being lucky. Yes, I consider myself to be very lucky, every time I need inspiration for my writing I go back and reread the reviews I've received and they push me to keep going. Even when the story is fighting back.
I don't know if I'm qualified to try to teach you anything , I just enjoyed reading and writing, but I suppose I may be able to give you a few tips. The first one being don't take any shortcuts developing your story, make sure you explain your character's motives emotions and feelings and what precipitated them. Number two is continuity to the best to maintain the continuity of your stories so you don't throw the reader out of the world you're trying to create for them. If you think of something in later chapters that relates to the earlier chapters , make sure that you get the reference right.
For instance in the legend of Drizzt , the author wrote in one of the early books about the main character playing a joke on his nome friend, where he had his pet Panther lie on top of the nome. Then in a later book got it wrong when the main character was retelling the story and said he had the panther lie on his dwarf friend. Both characters were present at the retelling of the story
and both acted like he got it right.
It may seem like a small breach in the continuity of the story, but it's those small things that stick with the reader.
The third and final tip I can give is that if your character has special abilities or attributes, explain them! How they got them and how they work and don't put them in unless they're important to the story.
If you read my stories, you'll see that I have tried to stick to these principles myself, and hopefully they can help you.
    Good luck from Ayhsa
P.S. Oh wait , I just thought of one more thing and it's probably the most important. Read your story not as you wrote it because , you can overlook things that way. you have to try to read it as if you don't know what's written on the page. . It's a very difficult thing to do as the writer of the story, you tend to anticipate what the next word will be and you miss seeing what's actually there and it can be something that you did not intend to put on the page that totally destroys the continuity of your story. So every time you complete a couple of chapters go back over it , make sure you read every single word that is actually on the page and then once you've completed a scene or chapter reread that to make sure it comes off the way you intend.
Well that's all I have I sincerely hope it helps.

I've had far too many amazing and wonderful reviews to try and pick just one.
I really can't think of a worst review, per se, because I tend to think any review has value. Any time you provoke a reaction in a reader strong enough to make them review, you've done your job as a writer.
Having said that, the only head scratcher I ever got was a review that informed me that I was using too many big words. I looked at the M tag (this was when I still posted on FFN) and just had to laugh.

Reviews make the world go round ^^ It's a fact. So in light of this I would like to hear from different writers what the worst or best review was you ever got, and how did you react/get through it?
Just one rule: This is NOT a bashing fic, don't insult people . Try to keep it anonymous as far as possible! We don't want any trouble Of course if you want to thank a reviewer for anything then by all means! Just use your own discretion and don't be mean about it.
My worst review was in regards to a Watchmen fic I wrote years ago. And this particular reviewer told me, and I quote:
"This is probably the most shallow and pathetic attempt at humour I have witnessed. The story was very predictable, unimaginative and a simple theme was handled very poorly. From someone who has written a few good stories, I really expected better. Better luck next time."
Yeah I went fetal for like three hours before my friend came in, and then I started crying. I felt better after that but I stopped writing for like a month, I didn't type a word, and almost deleted my account. I was fifteen, okay? >_< Everytime I tried to write I started crying again.
Eventually I got over it, but I still carry this with me. It's a constant reminder that just because I am writing well doesn't mean that I can throw-up anything and people will still see it as good.
Humility is a painful lesson >_<

I totally get that. Your written creation is like a "mini-me" and I get tickled at reading my own stuff when I feel I've done it just right. Then, I really want to share it but, damn, that means someone other than me is going to read it! What if they don't feel the same as I do? It's a shitty dilemma. To share or not to share, not just the story, but the feelings. I want others to know my joy and feel their own, but there's no frickin' guarantee so you just have to plug your nose and jump. Scary and thrilling, sometimes disappointing, maybe even crushing. Meh, I just move on to the next chapter, and start all over again.

Some of my very favorite authors are in buffy and lotr. I bring that up because those are OLD fandoms to write about. So, because of it, the authors aren't reviewed like they should be.
Thing is, it appears to me unless you're a kid with a bunch of friends to pat your back regardless of how trite or horrid the story, you get reviews. Believe me, I see that ALL the time. Yet, a well written story gets almost none. That kills me.

Just a point of argument, I don't need to defend my tastes. Some of the stories I love are favorited on my profile (click link to left, click "Recommended Reading"). I've a list I'm saving for when certain elements of the new code go into effect so I have items with which to test it.
I'm not offended, but I am going to point that little quibble out for you.

I'm not offended, but I do think this question is so subjective as to become irrelevant. I don't think my opinions should carry such weight, on one hand, but on the other, I would not give anything such an extravagant rating. It's not telling anyone why I liked it.
I can only speak to things that please me. I like plot. I like complexity and authors that are in love with language. I like authors that respect and stay as close to canon concepts as possible, and who do not write a character so out of character as to be unrecognizable. I like dialogue that's realistic and fluid. I like authors that bother to research things they write about. I like authors that grasp that "adult" does not mean pornographic or filled with gratuitous violence. I like authors that don't feel the need to spoon feed me every detail, who encourage me to use my own vivid imagination and who paint word pictures capable of allowing me to do just that.
Obviously, if someone is only looking for something light, or just some PWP, my rating isn't going to help them very much.

I find the rating system to be highly unreliable. One person with an honest opinion can rate a ++ and two fanpoodles rate +++++ and the system shows three rated +++++.
IMHO stories with those super high ratings are rated up unnaturally.
I agree with DG -- there are hugely talented writers on this site across all of the fandoms who don't encourage or rely on their cohorts for the popularity ego-stroke.

    Tisienne Blue
    LitGal
    jameschick
That's just from Buffy 'verse. I KNOW I can point you to many more who certainly are deserving of high ratings on their stories, yet often don't get them. Why? Because it's either an older 'verse or a 'verse with a small following.

Another factor that can make looking for such an extreme number of votes is that some fandoms simply do not generate that level of participation by readers.
Harry Potter, Naruto, or anything in Originals involving vampires, weres or both will have a large number of readers. But there are many wonderfully written works in smaller fandoms where getting a dozen votes is high praise indeed.
Your mileage may vary, but I prefer quality over popularity. Not that there aren't good fictions in those popular categories, but they're not as prevalent at the ratings would have you believe.

Okay, first, let me point you to this, then I'll give you examples of what Bronx is referring to:
    Examples:
    June 16, 2010
    June 17, 2010
    Aug 8, 2010
    Nov 30, 2010
    Dec 28, 2010
    June 4, 2011
And a discussion about how ineffective the ratings actually are can be found here.
My point is, relying on ratings, no matter how prolific, may not be the best indicator of a good story.

magicmau5 reacted to NightScribe in 5 Star Ratings
Has this happened to you? You're looking for a fic, and as you scroll your fandom, or subcategory, you see a glut, a plethora, a cornucopia of 5 star rated stories. You click on one...and immediately find it is a piece of shit. Or that maybe it's an o.k. story, 3 or 3-1/2 star (I know the 1/2's don't exist, but you get my point).
This bugs the hell out of me. So many times, I have lost minutes, nay, hours, of my life that I will not get back because so many stories are given excellent ratings. I understand that these kind of things are subjective, but come on. A rambling "fuck you if you don't like this" author's note (I just saw one like that, I wanted to bitch slap that little punk) followed by a fic loaded with punctuation and grammatical errors and a half-assed plot. And a story that wasn't even freaking completed from a year ago. That does not constitute 5 stars. I'm sorry.
I saw somebody in the HP fandom asking what were some good stories to read, they were having a hard time finding any. Now that's pretty sad, but it kind of proves my point; they probably got fed up seeing all those highly rated fics and finding they were mediocre. I think what bugs me the most is the younger crowd (read: underage punks) who think that just because there's a badly written anal sex scene or blow job with lots of use of the word "fuck" and "cock" it's great. The worst part is, how many really good stories, deserving of the high rating, are overlooked because a reader is just burned out or given up because of misleading ratings (not to mention reviews?)
I guess I rambled a bit, sorry about that.

I'm going to state the obvious on this again (at least I think it's obvious). Often, the quantity of reviews is in no way an indication of the quality of writing. In the process of cleaning up and reordering and whatnot, I've seen a load of stories I'd never bother to open but for the task I'm working on, that get more reviews than you can shake a stick at. Yet, I'll also run across very well written stories, which have little or no reviews, often not even a rating.
I think it's because you have some people (I'm not a writer, so have no idea, truly) who have their friends and the clique they happen to belong to, review their stories, and review them as being wonderful, whether or not such a review is deserved. Often, those reviews are not deserved.
    Just my two cents..
