  1. So, who here got sidelined in the government shutdown?

Honestly, it’s just that sort of pure blind luck I seem to have. I’d worked for the government before, they were recruiting, they made puppy eyes, and I said okay. I went through all the paperwork, and vetting, and clearances (I’m shockingly clearance-worthy). I was sworn in on October 29, and I’m now having a lovely little unpaid vacation.

In truth, I work because I’m bored otherwise. I’m not dependent on that paycheck, so I’m fine. BUT there are far too many other people who do depend on that paycheck, and this was simply wrong. I feel worse for the people who have to work without pay. My hat is off to Senator Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada, however. Once again, as she did in the last shutdown, she is donating her salary during the shutdown to a Nevada charity. I admire the gesture.

I’m not going to dip my toes into the actual politics. I’m fairly moderate, and view both the far left and far right with the same sort of wary distaste generally reserved for things best not discussed in the drawing room. I will say that if one does not have a grasp of economics, or even the patience to read a one-page precis, one should not attempt to govern. Governing from the gut tends to fail miserably, which one knows if one reads their history.

@Praetor Isn’t that the truth, though?

  2. For everyone celebrating today, a very Happy Thanksgiving.

I am thankful for my family, both real life and my extended online family. I’m thankful for a warm home, and food on the table. I’m thankful for so many things today, and grateful, too.

@CloverReef Know the feeling.  One of my cats has kidney disease, it’s a one way thing, diagnosed about a year and a half ago.  Vet suggested more and more tests, and I did push back, with, “will this change the prognosis?  Or help?”  Based on the litter box, I know it’s progressing, that his time is limited, but I’ve had a warning, I’ve tried to make sure that he’s generally happy, and dreading that final day, but it won’t be as big of a shock as that first one was, because that first one, I wasn’t expecting, it was basically out of the blue to me.  A side effect was that I had already had to start considering the burial vs cremation decision on the sick cat, pros and cons, so I did have a small head start when I did have to make that decision for the unexpected one.

      CloverReef

That’s so sad, @Desiderius Price. I lost a cat to kidney disease last year. It was very sudden and ugly. Just one night she was her usual self, knocking shit off high places and enjoying terrorizing the dog, then the seizures hit and within one minute, she was suddenly, a weak, fragile little thing. Learned a lot about the empathy of my other animals that week. I feel for you. <3

  7. The wee corgi lass is in the hospital.  ::sigh::

    I fucking hate epilepsy.

Might I suggest that next year, you go someplace more peaceful?  Say, downtown Detroit?  …. seriously, someplace calmer where there aren’t fireworks?  I know, you shouldn’t have to, but just to protect the family?

    3. BronxWench

      BronxWench

I don’t think it was the fireworks, really. I suspect it’s partly the hot weather, and partly an annual flare-up. When she was first diagnosed, it was right before the July 4 holiday, and we didn’t realize the phenobarbital we were administering orally wouldn’t build to a therapeutic level quickly enough. She started having clusters, and wound up nearly dying on us. Her last bad run of seizures, bad enough to put her in the hospital, was early September last year.

What I want is someone to tell me cannabis oil works for canine epilepsy, too, and I’ll be at that damned dispensary so fast, I’ll break the sound barrier.

    4. Anesor

      Anesor

Sorry it flared like this. We just can’t comfort them enough and they try to to return it too. I worry about ours getting something chronic like this.

  8. And of course, because it’s hot, and nasty, and there are fireworks, the wee corgi lass is having seizures… :(

I can’t stand how loud fireworks are. I really feel for the doggy. It really is anxiety provoking and can easily cause a panic attack. I hope your corgi gets better soon and that a trip to the hospital doesn’t end up being necessary. I think it’s be a good idea to have a talk with all your neighbors about taking their fireworks elsewhere and explain to them how it effects the poor pup if you haven’t done that.

I never saw the deer, just heard the “thunk”.  Fortunately I’ve got a dash cam, so I was able to review the footage, and for several frames, the deer was present.  (The pickup coming the other way never slowed down either, barely missed it)  Now with minor hoof marks on the back of my car… (no, I’m not driving too close to the north pole either).

I’d probably not be writing if it weren’t for the computer.  The ability to backspace, change, revise.  I’ve done some hand stuff since then, usually when I’m too far away from the computer; it’s a bit better in quality, but I wouldn’t be able keep up with it.

A fast and durable hard drive is never a bad thing.  As for *nix, you will want to be VERY COMFORTABLE with the “normally hidden wires” of an operating system before using it.  I have experience with SCO Unix, Intel Solaris, Linux, and post-Intel Apple OSX.  If you have to try *nix, get an iMac.  All the unix stuff is in there, but stays “hidden” unless you go looking for it.

    3. Desiderius Price

      Desiderius Price

@Wilde_Guess I read the "fast and durable hard drive" way too fast, started to think latex and naughty thoughts (this is AFF after all)  :)

    4. BronxWench

      BronxWench

@Wilde_Guess I’m an old DOS user, so I’m very much at home with working in the command prompt arena. The daft one and I were tidying, and ran across our ancient notes on tweaking HIMEM on our--really—IBM PS1. We’re hopelessly geeky, and the daft one has at least one laptop that runs Linux (don’t ask me what flavor) and one that still runs DOS.

@Desiderius Price Very good! You get to move to the front of the spanking line.

Sorry about the blood tests, but I really, REALLY do not need my computer to act up today, nor do I need the aggravation of trying to deal with updates on a website when I can barely load the freaking website as it is, and getting a call from the daft one that he needs me to drive down and pick him up at MIDNIGHT tonight, because I don’t mind going to bed at 1am when I need to be up at 5:30am, and when he’s dragging me to a seminar/trade show/dinner thing tomorrow.

It is either the hard drive deciding to fail or it’s the router. I’m hoping it’s the router, because I can fix that in 5 minutes or less. The hard drive will take a little longer.

    3. Desiderius Price

      Desiderius Price

I’d backup the hard drive, just in case…. it could simply be time to reinstall.

    4. BronxWench

      BronxWench

I’ll replace the hard drive. Reinstalling is simply delaying the inevitable. In the meantime, I have the idiot laptop which has very little I can actually use, but….

  20. It is Day 3000 of the nuclear winter, and I am preparing to go and stock up in advance of the coming Bomb Cyclone we are threatened with as of tonight.
