Not sure where to put this at but… has anyone been having problem logging into the archive? I’ve been trying for about a couple of weeks now 😩

I’m not sure why it’s an issue, but from time to time, the archive acts up. I know it logs me out when I go from place to place—I have to log in when I use my lappie at my lake place, and when I get home, I have to log in on the desktop, but usually, I can just open the dropdown menu and click the LOGIN option under my pen name.

And now I’ve had my colonoscopy without anesthetic. The procedure itself wasn’t a problem at all; the hours of horrific diarrhoea before it, on the other hand, now that was nasty.

Dear gods, man! You’d best keep us posted as to the results, although I imagine it’s going to make one hell of a photo album.

I was the daft bugger’s responsible adult. The prelude was gruesome, and I was desperately grateful that he was anesthetized for the procedure, because I think it would have been a race between me and his doctor as to who murdered him first otherwise.

So apparently AO3 is suffering from a DOS attack at the moment. It was posted on FB in one of my writing groups. Just thought i would put this out there

We don’t allow Patreon here, exactly because there’s no way for us to be sure that members are only receiving donations for original work.
It is a clear and distinct violation of copyright law for anyone to profit from copyrighted material without written permission from the copyright owner. So, a toy company can make a Harry Potter game, as long as they receive permission from JK Rowling, but if someone sells Harry Potter merchandise without having obtained that permission, the lawyers will swoop in, and generally the person violating copyright law gets to pay their lawyer and the copyright owner’s lawyer, substantial fines, and possibly could receive a jail sentence based on how much they earned.
The same thing applies to fan fiction. If someone sets up a Patreon on a fiction archive, and publishes both fan fiction and original work on the archive, there’s no way to tell what the patrons are donating for. The patrons might think they’re doing the author a huge favor by donating, so the author can work on that fan fiction they love so much, and if they mention in a review that they donated for that reason, well. I would not want to be in that author’s shoes when the copyright owner finds out.

@Desiderius Price Exactly, whereas the late Anne Rice had a firm of lawyers who hunted down anyone who dared write fan fiction using her property. She wasn’t above personal harassment, either. Her estate has not changed that stance, either, so anyone thinking that her passing means her work is fair game might think again.
And then there’s public domain, which is probably the least understood concept among fiction archives.

I’m ridiculously conservative when it comes to the fair use provisions of copyright law myself. I do write fan fiction for somewhat obscure fandoms, but one fandom is the property of Wizards of the Coast, and they are relentless in protecting their copyright.
As far as original fiction goes, I either submit to a publisher, or put it up here for free. It’s just simpler that way.

@Deadman I’m hoping that this new site you found isn’t allowing payment for fan fiction, but only for original content. Payment for fan fiction crosses all sorts of legal thresholds, and I wouldn’t recommend anyone stick a toe into those waters. There’s a very good reason lawyers are compared to sharks...

It has been a LONG while since I’ve been active here! And I don’t know how many this will reach but here goes. About ten years ago, someone reached out and I’m guessing gave me a link to one of their stories, possibly for the purpose of me trying to be a beta? I’m not sure: I really suck at being a beta. As shown because I finally went through my files and found it. I’ve already asked my closest friends but it’s a no from them. IF ANY OF YOU HAS EVER SHARED A STORY WITH ME, PLEASE LET ME KNOW: this story is good and I would like to tell the author and apologize.

Could you send me the link to reset my password. I tired it a few times and it comes up with thi: This Password Reset is no longer Valid

The Naming of Cats
T. S. Eliot1888 –1965The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter,
It isn’t just one of your holiday games;
You may think at first I’m as mad as a hatter
When I tell you, a cat must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES.
First of all, there’s the name that the family use daily,
Such as Peter, Augustus, Alonzo, or James,
Such as Victor or Jonathan, George or Bill Bailey—
All of them sensible everyday names.
There are fancier names if you think they sound sweeter,
Some for the gentlemen, some for the dames:
Such as Plato, Admetus, Electra, Demeter—
But all of them sensible everyday names,
But I tell you, a cat needs a name that’s particular,
A name that’s peculiar, and more dignified,
Else how can he keep up his tail perpendicular,
Or spread out his whiskers, or cherish his pride?
Of names of this kind, I can give you a quorum,
Such as Munkustrap, Quaxo, or Coricopat,
Such as Bombalurina, or else Jellylorum—
Names that never belong to more than one cat.
But above and beyond there’s still one name left over,
And that is the name that you never will guess;
The name that no human research can discover—
But THE CAT HIMSELF KNOWS, and will never confess.
When you notice a cat in profound meditation,
The reason, I tell you, is always the same:
His mind is engaged in a rapt contemplation
Of the thought, of the thought, of the thought of his name:
His ineffable effable
Effanineffable
Deep and inscrutable singular name. From Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats. Copyright © 1939 by T. S. Eliot, renewed © 1967 by Esme Valerie Eliot.

Lately, whenever I try to look at the reviews of any of my stories, my browser has been giving me the “Your connection is not private. Attackers might be trying to steal your information from cartoon.adult-fanfiction.org (for example, passwords, messages, or credit cards).” Is this happening to anyone else?

@Wilde_Guess That may explain it. Chrome did away with the yellow triangle, giving us only a lock or the Red Triangle of Fear.
I stopped using Firefox a while back because it was a resource hog on my older desktop, as well as prone to sudden crashes and dramatic restarts. I don’t know if it works better now, honestly, but since I use MS Win 11, it might not matter which I use.

@Wilde_Guess This is why I’m not the coder, nor do I play one on television.
I’m only getting the error message/warning when I open those specific subdomains. If I open any other subdomain, the url is prefaced with a lock symbol, which means the subdomain is secure. Keep in mind our forum is a separate entity from the archive, and the archive is actually 22 separate databases for the various subdomains, so the ssl certification has to be done for each database individually, as I understood it.

SSL has been enabled for some time, @Desiderius Price
The issue is currently confined to Cartoons and Final Fantasy. The error is shown as an expired security certificate. I’ve posted the information for @manta2g and @DemonGoddess so they can file a ticket with our server host.
I haven’t encountered any issues thus far with the forums, but if this is a genuine expiration, all our subdomains and the forum should be tripping the warning. They are not, however, so for now I would avoid Cartoons and Final Fantasy until we hear from an admin.

Armed Forces Day is for those who are serving the nation. Veterans Day is for those who have served. Memorial Day is for those who died in service of the United States.
