  8. Trouble with a Name

    Whenever I'm trying to consider a character's name, I think of what the name means.

    Diana:

    of Latin origin, and the meaning of Diana is "divine". Mythology: Diana was an ancient Roman divinity who came to be associated with the Greek god Artemis. Noted for her beauty and fleetness, Diana is often depicted as a huntress.

    Zoey:

    The meaning of the name Zoey is Life

    The origin of the name Zoey is Greek

    Valerie:

    of Latin origin, and the meaning of Valerie is "strong, healthy". Feminine form of Valerius, a Roman family clan name

    Olivia:

    of Latin origin, and the meaning of Olivia is "olive tree".

    Biblical: the olive tree is a symbol of fruitfulness, beauty, and dignity.

    Olivia and Diana are both associated with beauty, which is a trait of the Veela. In choosing one of those, you are, of course, creating irony given your character's promiscuous nature. Both are also good for the "Enchanted Wood" theme in your title.

    I admit I'm a bit of a traditionalist when it comes to names. Given that you're wanting to pass her off as Muggleborn, you might consider Olivia Angelson, since that last name is very mundane.

  13. A few questions about my first story

    There is no notification system in place. People will read a story because it is on the first page. Bear in mind we have over 150,000 members currently, and even more 'guests' on site every day, so people who will go into a section of the archive periodically just to see what's new will often click on stories updated since their last run through.

    There is currently no way to see how many 'subscribers' your story has - in this case, I'm interpreting that to mean how many people have added it to their favorites list.

    You may certainly post in the promote a story forum, provided that the story is hosted here on AFF. :D The rules and regulations of that forum are found here.

    No, you may not use your review board as a communications tool. That is expressly forbidden in the Guidelines, which are part of the Terms of Service of the site:

    You understand that you are not to engage in Review Board conversations. Review replies may either be posted in chapters with Author's Notes so long as they are under the 600 word limit or alternatively, you may create a topic in our forum to discuss your story and post a link to the topic in your story.

    What we recommend is to create a thread in the appropriate sub-forum here in order to reply to reviewers as well as make any author's notes that exceed the 600 word limit. Users do not have to be members of the forum in order to reply to your threads there, and what you would do is, once the thread is created, copy the URL into your story chapter (either at the top or the bottom) to let readers know that you will be replying to reviews there.

    (Example from one of mine:

    "Review replies can be found here: http://www2.adult-fanfiction.org/forum/index.php/topic/52114-review-replies-alternative-learning/ ")

    The URL will show in full within the chapter of the story.

    I hope that answers all of your questions, and we'd certainly prefer that users ask if something is unclear to them. :)

  14. Best or Worst review you've ever gotten

    As far as worst reviews, I can't quote them, since the poster deleted them from the stories. One particular user hated one of my fics, "Down Under," something fierce, and made no bones about it - and, to be fair, some of the criticisms raised were quite valid. This same user then started leaving baselessly harsh reviews on "First Times," accusing me of writing some characters OOC when, in the show the fic is based on, those characters had minimal screentime and thus little, if any, defined personalities; worse, the accusations were also based on assumptions from mainstream Marvel continuity, when "First Times" was clearly stated as taking place in a different continuity. In some cases, the criticisms of that story even seemed to be based on deliberate misreadings of what I'd written, which was the most frustrating part. I'm glad he chose to stop reviewing that story, as his reviews weren't at all constructive.

    What you're describing sounds like flaming (without seeing the reviews exactly, would not be able to state definitively), and we don't allow it. If that was something staff found, it's possible the user's account was terminated, not just that the user removed the reviews.
