@Praetor I attribute a good part of what I love about my own writing skill to a healthy exchange between writers. Twenty years of exchanging stories to beta and giving each other advice is the way I chose to evolve. It’s what works for me. It’s why I’m active on this site. Of course it wasn’t all good advice, but you learn to pick and choose what to take and what to shrug off. Doing your own thing is absolutely important too. I just prefer a balance of both. 

I wrote a bunch of tips here actually, speaking of which, although I couldn’t remember where they were so I had to go hunting for them.

Not only is there all that BS, but there’s also the massive variation in what works for whom. I recently went to a panel discussion in which 5 writers talked about, among other things, hashing out story ideas. Some of them absolutely needed someone to discuss ideas with; some just needed to say them out loud, even to a rubber ducky; and one said that articulating his ideas made him lose all interest in them. 

They doped me up. I don’t remember anything about the procedure and my memory is pretty spotty over the last 24 hours too. But I guess it went okay? Since no one told me otherwise, that I remember? lol. Recovery’s moving quick though

Funny you should mention Law & Order @CloverReef because that just happens to be my favorite one!  The original, not the Special Victims Unit.

They film quite a bit for that show in my neighborhood. All of the Law and Order shows, actually. But I did get to meet Jerry Orbach once, and he was lovely.

I like svu mostly because ice T dealing with sensitive cases amuses the hell out of me. When i was into procedural dramas though my poisin was ncis. I liked criminal minds too until greg from dharma and Greg came into it. I don't like his eyebrows.

I hated outlines! Though reverse outlines are super fun, though that’s the organizing information that appeals to the giant nerd in me. I like to freely write whatever seems to come next naturally and loosely jot down any event ideas as they occur to me, but this zombie fic is in desperate need of something besides just survival to aim for soooo I think I gotta do it. Pooey.

I don’t really call what I do ‘making an outline’ of what I’m writing.  It’s more like a list of the main objectives of the story.   I free write as well and it can be frustrating at times.

But for me, that’s when going back to look at my objectives and any other comments I’ve added, can sometimes trigger some inspiration.

I’m with B Dubz on this one ^ And actually, as a WOC myself, I find it hard to hate racist characters. I usually just feel sorry for them  Now, unless he’s literally committing hate crimes, I think you can toe the line if the racism is stemming from an aspect of his character, like his upbringing or maybe deep-seated insecurities. People are never going to like his racism, but they be able to sympathize and/or root for him to get better. Unless it’s very casual racism, which I think can slide for the sake of the story. 

That’s good advice. I might push the limits a little, when emotions run high and ugly situations bring out ugly in people. But this character’s racism will be coming from an obvious place of fear and ignorance. If it shows up at all. These little fuckers have been crafty at evading my attempts to throw in conflict so far, but I’ll get em! *shakes fist*

You use the daily contacts? Those are a lot more expensive than the monthly ones I use. It isn't hard to clean them, so I just do that. The fact that I flip so much between glasses and contacts helps in not having to clean them every day, though I do have to clean the lenses throughout the day when wearing my glasses because of all the little dust mites floating around inside if I'm home all day.

Tinted moisturizer might work depending on the brand and such. I never bothered trying that myself, though. I sometimes don't even bother with make-up when wearing my contacts. If it's a particular occasion, I'll definitely put on at least some foundation and mascara, otherwise it's just depends on whether I feel like it or not.

I'm afraid of wearing sunglasses with my contacts for that reason when I do put on make-up! I haven't worn actual sunglasses in so long because of that.

@Arian-Sinclair I live in LA, so not wearing sunglasses is not really an option lol. Hey, maybe that’s why everyone here walks around with shades on indoors and at night!

@Desiderius Price I tend to avoid the hells out of scat and WS when I don’t have to read it for the weekly sweeps. I’d almost rather read about sounding, which remains to date the only thing to actually have made me cry a little while sweeping. (I was very new, in my defense.)

@BronxWench I tend to say “scat” in the forums for the “eww” response.  In my writings, the tag will be a general CYA because I’ll mention characters taking a dump when it’s relevant to the story.  I can’t really fathom the “play” part of it, and I don’t want to.

Could try breaking it up, or start with end and work backwards, or make a lousy write through and revise.

Try writing the scene as if you are telling someone what happens in it, in rudimentary terms.  For example: Hinata does this thing with her arms and hands to generate a shit load of chakra that transforms into a protective wall.  Then go back and transform the text into the actual prose that constructs the scene.

thanks for the tips guys. I’m past the scene now. I tend to just keep starting the scene over and over again when I’m struggling, until it feels right, which is clearly an imperfect strategy. I’ll totally try it your way next time. And there will be a next time lol.
