One of our members, Sessakag, has had the unfortunate experience of finding their story posted without permission on this site: https://www.patreon.com/WhatIfFanfics/collections. The stories that have been used are largely in the Naruto fandom, although there are some crossovers as well. The worst part? It's behind a paywall. That's right--this plagiarist expects you to pay $10 to listen a story published by the actual author for free right here on AFF. See, that's the plagiarist's hook. These are AUDIO copies. Now, mind you, this plagiarist had their YouTube account suspended, most likely for the very same thing, but they don't seem able to learn their lesson. If your story has been stolen, Patreon wants you to reach out to the "creator" on Patreon and ask them to be nice and take it down. If that doesn't work, they also suggest filing a DMCA takedown notice (https://support.patreon.com/hc/en-us/articles/208377833). The catch is that you need a Patreon account to report the stolen content. However, the more times this thief is reported, the more likely it is that Patreon will be forced to take action. I want to send a huge thank you to Sessakag for reporting this to us. Even if AFF can't tell Patreon how to run their site, we can be proud of our members, who respect the hard work put into creating the fan fictions we all enjoy. UPDATE: Patreon responded quickly to the DMCA request from Sessakag, and removed the story from the Patreon page, although the account hasn't been suspended. If you too have been a victim, please go and file that DMCA takedown notice with Patreon! ANOTHER UPDATE: It seems there are now YouTube videos where this person reads a story aloud, so they haven’t learned their lesson from the first YouTube suspension. I’ve gotten unsolicited requests that try to push me into writing for fandoms that I know nothing about. Guess that’s my hard stop for writing, along with the desire to finish what I’ve already started. And TBH, if I had fallen into the potter universe today, it’s unlikely that I’d even delve into fanfiction.

Reminds me of an ancient joke I heard when I was a mere lad. A young woman comes into an embroidery shop and asks the proprietor if they can do custom work on something delicate. Asked what she means, she pulls a pair of nylons* out and says, “Up here at the top where it’s reinforced for the garter.” Examining it, the owner says, “It’s kind of touchy but I think we could manage it. I would say so personally. I mean, most characters are the gender they are for a reason. Particularly if the character has appeared on screen, like most of mine have. So I prefer to create an OC rather than gender bend a character. Or I just shift the sexuality of the character. More than a few of the female characters I write about have intense relationships with other women. Though most of them aren’t explicitly lesbians. So occasionally I just give them a broader sexuality, usually bisexual.

The problem I’ve noticed, is even when a user white lists our mail server, we STILL get marked as spam. Not always, but often enough for it to be an ongoing issue.

Hmm….Halloween story, where the happy ending is the tragic ending. Not sure how to pull that off in the original universe I tend to write in.

A lot of my stories are primarily erotica, so “happy endings” are par for the course. Seriously, my endings tend to be predictable. If the story has a tragic storyline, then it probably has a tragic ending. If it’s a happy storyline, happy ending. Although if it’s a Halloween story, all bets are off.

While the spaceships from the Star Trek universe keep Captain’s and Ship’s Logs, other ships of notable size also keep Ship’s Logs, and the ship’s Captain might also keep a “Captain’s Log” or journal/diary of personal observations he or she doesn’t wish to keep in the main ship’s log. Seeing the erotica/pornographic bent of this site, I would also assume that the “Captain” just might be well-endowed (or tragically not endowed,) and was (at least trying) to get “busy.” Cheers!

Maybe getting one character getting the other’s name slightly wrong? Something that’s eerily similar to another’s name?

Well, flip the tables around and imagine it’s a fanfic with YOU as the central character. It’d be a fictional narrative putting events/actions into your own personal history/future, yeah, that’d be disturbing. (And if it’s derogatory/slanderous, the author opens themselves up to a lawsuit too.) Normally I bend over backwards to NOT associate my stories with real people/buildings/etc. So, I’ll make up town names, or at least scramble the road/street name the homes are on to avoid the Goonies House effect. It’s a fine line, but as a viewer, I know I was irritated when a show like Dead Like Me films in Vancouver BC and tries to pass it off as Seattle… it broke the immersion because I knew it was off.

Knowing this website, the question will morph with the conversation, and the answer will always remain the same (42).

I have a sneaking suspicion, that people aren't leaving reviews, because they don't know what they should say in them. It's something that I asked myself about, when I wanted to leave a review on a story I enjoyed. I didn't want to just say 'good job', and I also wanted to avoid saying 'this is bad' or 'good', without being as objective as I could be. So, I sat down and thought about what things a reader and writer of fan-fiction, might want to know or should know, about a fan-fic. With this in mind, I wrote down a list of things that I may or may not put in a review, depending on whether or not I think it should be said. This is the list that I now use, when writing a review. --- Was this story good or bad overall? Could you recommend the story? Give at least a vague reason or example as to why, it was good or bad for you. Do the characters have, for the most part, 'clear' and 'reasonable' motivations that drive them to do what they are doing? If motives are in doubt, can you offer improvements to the motives of their characters? Is the story too, out of place, to be believable in the 'cannon' of that 'universe'? If it does feel out of place, can you offer an improvement, so the story doesn't feel out of line with the 'cannon' of that 'universe'? How is the wording and spelling? Is it difficult or easy to read through? If it is difficult to read through, can you offer a suggestion as to how the writer can improve on those? Does the story's title, description and tags, give the reader a clear idea of what the story may be about, without, spoiling the story? Can you offer advice on how to make these more clear, without, spoiling the story? What else, if anything, do you want the readers and/or the writer to know, about this story? --- These are of course, things that I felt would be important in a review, for both a reader and writer. I think this would be a good template for those who are looking to give an 'objective' review, but don't know where to start. Of course I'm always eager to hear other's thoughts and perspectives on the matter, and on the template I now use.

As an obsessive perfectionist, I find that I'm constantly over thinking things and constantly marring my work, by focusing on things that don't need the extra attention. In a few days, I'm sure I'll have the free time to finish and post a new story in the archive. I looked at the story codes and started thinking, (obsessing needlessly), about two tags in particular. GB - the gender bender tag, and OC - the original character tag. This really made me wonder, wouldn't a gender bender character, also count as an original character? I'm interested in hearing anyone's thoughts on what makes an 'original character', in the face of such a change. How much can that character change, before that character is considered, a different character?

I posted my story with the proper tags, and a short description of what changes where made to the canon universe. I think I'll keep doing that from this point forward. Thanks for the advice everyone.

There are two options. If the character is central to the story, even if they die offstage, so to speak, I‘d recommend the Major Character Death (MCD) tag. If the character is not central to the story, you could use the Minor Character Death (MiCD) tag, to alert readers to the death of a character without having them pull their hair out over losing one of the stars of the canon.

The “MIME-Version 1.0” portion shouldn’t appear. The emails should come from just “noreply@adult-fanfiction.org” so perhaps that’s something in the code that needs tweaking?

I agree with @InvidiaRed on this one. If it’s a demon with the ability to think in human terms, then it’s not bestiality. If it’s an animal with the thought processes of an animal, it’s bestiality.

There is a tendency among a lot of writers to rely on profanity when they're writing a sex scene. To the writer who does this, all sex scenes have to have profanity. Someone has to be screaming “fuck me” or something for the sex scene to be readable (according to the people who rely on it). Before you start writing your scene, here are some questions you should ask yourself: 1.) Who are the characters in your scene? Is it in their personality or their diction to use that type of profanity, even in extreme situations? If not, then your characters won't actually be in the scene you write. Instead, it’ll be charicatures of your characters. 2.) What was the build up to the scene you are writing? Was it two characters confessing their feelings in an intimate fashion, or was it just animal lust? The former sets into the story better with as little profanity as possible (preferably none). If it, for example, was an encounter in the backroom of a sex club, then feel free to go as heavy with profanity as you’d like because it sets into your story. These are just my opinions. Take them for whatever little they're worth.

I use profanity frequently in sex scenes, for two reasons: --My sex scenes are more often about lust than love. --I’m a great devotee of dirty talk in sex scenes. On the second point, though, my friend and beta Jomahawk recently gave me some sage advice: If one or both of the characters are capable of speaking full, uninterrupted sentences during sex, it suggests that they aren’t having that good a time. So now I try to be mindful of that.

This is off topic, but you should check out an anime called “Food Wars”. There's 36 volumes in the manga, and the manga actually has practical recipes for the food that they're cooking in the show! But getting back on topic, it is definitely true that profanity in the correct spots can actually enhance the effectiveness of an attempt at communication, but too much shows not only articulation inadequacies but literacy inadequacies as well.

I got into fanfiction (& writing) specifically due to the long hiatus between the potter releases… there was a three year gap between GoF & Ootp & subsequent books. So mine’s basically a “continue the story and speculate” type of story. Now that OotP & others have released, I do have more of canon to leverage (characters, places, etc), so I do that, however, plot wise, it’s still post GoF story, not Ootp or later. (And my story’s likely reaching the 1.4M mark tomorrow…. on my drive)

Um… multiple locations (Ron had taken something to let him recover/reuse fast), which meant four separate sets of citations. The “cleaner” version of the story lets the reader construct the date from Harry listing the citations, while the “explicit” version shows the date details Thus for citations 3 & 4: “Ought to demand a refund,” Harry said, “Clearly an all–you–can–eat buffet should include a free banger.” “Aw,” Harry said, “Guess the opera didn’t appreciate you two climaxing at their climax.”

On this archive (or AO3), always, always list trigger tags. While yes it’s technically a spoiler, you don’t want to surprise your readers with a “surprise” rape scene or something.

So, lots of news: --I just posted a new chapter of “Master Plan”: Chapter 2: Shower Power --Shortly before that, I sent a new one-shot Loud House house story off to beta. It's basically a PWP piece about Lincoln, Luna, and Lucy. --I was recently pleased to discover that I’m now in 2nd place on AFF's list of most recommended authors! I guess even if you don't write Harry Potter or Naruto stories, you can make it up in volume.

Thanks for all the feedback @Desiderius Price, @GeorgeGlass, @Wilde_Guess and @Thundercloud For additional context, the story that inspired me to write this story involved the main character Dom seducing two subs. In the story, the two seductions happened over a couple chapters before the author didn’t finish the story. The first seduction happened but I was looking forward to the end of the second seduction, which wasn’t finished. So part of the reason why my story kinda “recaps” the first seduction is because I was left… satisfied story wise with that first seduction dynamic. It’s not referencing the story that I didn’t write, the story is different and even built on a story I originally wrote before I read this story that inspired me. I wanted to get to the second seduction and complete the thing I didn’t get in the story I enjoyed. Part of my reason for recapping is my own interest. But the other aspect is that I wanted the two subs to meet, which they didn’t. And the main character uses the first sub to tempt the second sub into being seduced. Hopefully that makes a certain amount of sense. The recap is about one page long, but I need to fill in details so at most it will be a recap of about two pages. But about half of that recap is the first seduction and the second half is how the main character is using the first sub like I mentioned above.

To be fair, Kirk did start the whole boldly going where no man has gone before thing and Spock is likely keeping the ship logs professional. Nevermind the enterprise would be hook up and fling central for everybody aboard the mini city flying through space.

Concur with @BronxWench Most definitely think of Star Trek. So, no @Wilde_Guess I don’t think it’s something that gets flushed down the Captain’s head.

It depends on genre mostly. I like endings where the character breaks even or if they’re doomed they at least helped turned the tide in some small manner even if its just that they gave hope no matter how small or fling a light into a darkened future. Hope is fickle like that but like a stubborn ember hope is so very resilient just when you think you’ve snuffed it out. Some stories there can be no happy ending. Like in dark settings. That said, I hate tragic endings and try to avoid them even if the characters themselves don’t see it. ( I think that might be part of reading so much greek tragedies in high-school)

For me, it depends on what I’m writing. Publishers tend to want happy-ever-after endings or at least happy-for-now endings. So, if I’m going to submit what I’m writing to a publisher, I try for at least the HFN ending. When I write for myself, I’m much less inclined to write happy endings. I’m never quite sure life has a happy ending in most cases, although I’m firmly in the camp of life having happy bits throughout. But I think how people cope with adversity that doesn’t resolve neatly is far too interesting not to write it.

Currently I'm writing a science fiction/erotic romance story. I wrote only one fanfiction for the Catch Teenieping fandom but I got writers block so I never finished it or posted it anywhere. Haha. But I am really interested in fanfiction. I really would love to start writing fanfiction! I am currently reading The Hobbit. So maybe I will write fanfiction for the LOTR fandom. Yep. And mentally I make PWP out to be “plot, what plot?” more than “porn w/o plot”, though both apply. So, technically, the little unreleased tale makes everything I’ve posted so far… BACKSTORY. Yep, though the group of one allows for some interesting context too.

I have to say that I’m not a fan of throwing copyright out the window, which is really what deep fake is. If Grimes wants to explicitly allow deep fakes of her voice, that’s her privilege, but I don’t think it’s even remotely alright to assume everyone who creates art, music, or written work is fine with being deep faked. Since I write for publication, I tend to focus on that, and it makes me extremely uncomfortable that someone would feel entitled to profit off what I’ve created. The majority of writers don’t earn enough to support themselves exclusively by writing. We’re not all NYTimes bestseller listed, or snapped up by the increasingly small number of large presses. We get a small enough slice of the pie as it is without having to worry about someone deciding to use AI to write a book using our characters, or settings, and taking our sliver of market share away from us. It also begs the question of why anyone would prefer to have AI write for them. For me, much of the joy and satisfaction of writing is putting the words together and creating a phrase, or a sentence, or a paragraph that resonates. I like to find cadence, and play with language. Why would I give that over to an AI program? I’d be ashamed to call myself a writer if I didn’t actually write what I put out there, either for sale of for free on a site like AFF.
